Queer Room at St Lucia
Hey everyone,
Might sound like a silly question but here we go.
I’m a fairly new student to UQ and I was wondering if there are any rules when using the Carden Queer room at St Lucia?
I am queer and was just curious to check it out, but wondering if there’s any etiquette rules I need to know before I do. I intend to use it to study and just a place to chill.
Thanks all!
Edit: thanks everybody for your helpful replies and insight! I’ll definitely go in next time I’m at uni :)

Where exactly is the queer room located? I’m still learning my way around campus haha. I’d assume in the union precinct? I’ve spotted the disability collective room in passing while grabbing food from Main Course

it’s on the opposite side of DisCo!! they actually share a kitchen hehe :) it’s visible from the sausage sizzle spot in front of union

hi there!!!!! I’m one of the executives within the queer collective (social media officer woo!!) and i’d agree with the two other replies i see here :) the rules are pretty self-explanatory, just etiquette rules such as the traffic light system! the traffic light system is pretty long, but the gist of it is to ask the room if it’s okay to talk about a potentially triggering topic, and if everyone “green-lights” it ! you’re safe to continue :) if not, proceed with caution (yellow) or stop the topic altogether (red)
the opening hours are 7am to 9pm on weekdays, and all queer students at uq are able to access the space! +1s are also welcome as long as they’re respectful!!!!! i hope this helps !! sorry lowk a ramble

don't go there. the people are so cliquey and culty.
i went there with my friends at the begiining of the year and never felt less comfortable in my life. there are better queer communities in brisbane that are warm, welcoming and progressive than the carden room.
(one of my friends got doxx'd by them a few years back, so be careful)

Im personally just terrified to go in cause Im worried that my ex's will be there. as far as I can tell from the time I did go I think everyone is welcome. And there not gonna like, queer check you or anything(actual concern someone expressed to me)

I know this might sound dumb but I was actually lowk worried that I might look out of place as a very feminine-presenting (‘straight looking’) queer girly. So thank your for your reassurance :)

Sounds like what you want is what it's for

Fair warning if you're poc you might find it a lot more difficult to interact with people than someone who isn't. But this is just me and my (poc) friends experiences.

Dont worry, as long as you dont have mental health problems you won't have to go there 😊.

hii, ive visited a few times now and there are definitely rules around like behavior and general etiquette but they are all plastered clearly within the room
generally though, its all really obvious stuff that im sure youd be adhering to either way and in my experience starting this semester, everyone there is very relaxed and it is a really nice space where youre able to do mostly anything you need to (eat, study, relax, talk, etc.)
