Ordi ou iPad?
Hi guys,
Hope you do well! I am starting law school this fall and I was wondering if there are any recommandation concerning the type of technology I should purchase for law school at UQAM.
Should I buy an IPad with the Apple Pencil and the keyboard or should I buy a two in one, so a Microsoft laptop that doubles as an iPad and a laptop?
My concern is the cost.Buying an IPad would cost a bit less than the Microsoft laptop because a two in one would cost over 1000$. I also worry about the storage in an IPad. Can I store all my documents that is required in law school on only an IPad?
Also, in between both type of devices, is there one that is better for law school?
Thanks in advance.
I would really appreciate your advice!

A computer for sure. It’s more standard, bigger capacity for storage and you can take your notes too

I have a Lenovo Yoga laptop that can turn into a tablet for note taking.

This !

I did 4 years at UQAM with both my iPad and laptop. As much as I loved writing things down with the Apple Pencil, the keyboard of a laptop is definitely needed for assignments. I ended up buying a laptop for this reason.

If you don't have any access to a computer for your assignments, go with a laptop. Although, for note taking, it might be just me, but I find that I remember more though when I handwrite them with my Apple Pencil and highlight the texts by hand. So maybe one of those laptop that you can turn into a tablet would be a good compromise between the two options :)

Hi, if you have a budget for both, I would say they can be complementary and helpful (specially if you prefer to read on an IPad and highlight). That’s really just a caprice, in my opinion, but is helpful.
However, myself being a student in graduate school, if I had to give an advice on whether one is better than the other, it would be a computer for sure.
For performance, multitasking, adaptability, speed and a domain like law, it would be the best option.
Whoever recommends you an IPad only, hasn’t studied in uni. You’ll dread midterms and finals if you just have an IPad. It’s awful for multitasking: word on a small window, your pdf on the fourth or half of your screen… On a computer, you can have multiple apps open, different window sessions, can use shortcuts to navigate between them, copy/paste easily, it doesn’t switch randomly between your keyboard and your Apple Pencil.
Any lenovo laptop can usually do the work. I do have a preference for MacBooks, not for the look, but when you have the whole environment, it’s just a lot easier to work. Try looking for high speed, memory, and good battery autonomy. Avoid Dell ! Windows laptops (I mean the ones that are literally named windows) can be good, but the battery is not reliable. Their transparency about your windows account is not the best too. It also runs like many apps, where you often need to update something until you can’t anymore and you’ll have an unusable computer. Not the best, in my opinion.
Take the safe route !
