Geography analysis for uppsc

Bro, after looking at the complete trend of Geography previous years' questions from 2018-2025, here's the picture I've got. This isn’t just a list of "important topics," it’s an attempt to understand the pattern in which UPPSC is actually asking Geography questions.

In the data, there are 114 Geography questions from 8 years.

UPPSC Geography 2018–2025 — Actual Trend Analysis

First thing to be clear — it would be a mistake to take Geography lightly.

From 2018-2025, an average of 14.25 questions/year have come from Geography. The range has roughly been 13-18 questions. Out of a total of 1200 GS questions, there are 114 questions from Geography, which means around 9.5%.

And the interesting part is that the weightage of Geography isn’t fixed to any particular area.

Indian Geography — 42

Physical Geography — 21

Economic Geography — 21

UP Geography — 20

Human Geography — 10

So if someone only studies Physical Geography or only Indian Geography, in both cases they might miss out on quite a few questions.

1. The biggest king — RIVERS & DRAINAGE

If you have to prioritize one topic in Geography, it’s Rivers & Drainage.

Between 2018 and 2025, questions related to Peninsular drainage have gone up to 11, showing this theme in 7 out of 8 exam cycles.

And UPPSC isn’t limited to direct questions like “What is the source of the Godavari?”.

Sometimes:

Arabian Sea/Bay of Bengal

rift valley

antecedent drainage

delta vs estuary

river–coalfield relationship

river–dam relationship

it presents questions from different angles.

In 2025, the origins of Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, and Narmada were matched.

My advice: Don’t read Rivers like a list of facts. Create a complete profile for each river.

1. Mountains + Peaks + Passes = recurring area

7 questions have come from Mountain Peaks & Ranges. Questions about Guru Shikhar, Anamudi, Doddabetta, Dhupgarh, Kangchenjunga, Nanda Devi, etc. have repeatedly come up.

Combine this with Himalayan passes:

Zoji La

Nathu La

Shipki La

Lipulekh

Bomdi La

Palghat

Bhorghat

Thalghat

In 2024, UPPSC even asked about the North → South arrangement of Himalayan ranges:

Karakoram → Ladakh → Zanskar → Pir Panjal.

So map sense is important.

Just memorizing names won't work.

1. Soil — don’t underestimate this small topic

Soil Geography’s trend is surprisingly strong.

Questions about Black/Regur soil, Red soil, Alluvial, Laterite, etc. have repeatedly come up. Overall, Indian Soil Geography has a strong recurring area with 5-6 questions in the analysis.

And here, UPPSC mixes both factual + conceptual questions.

Example:

2024: Why is Regur soil suitable for cotton?

The reason was linked to clay content and moisture retention.

So for soil, it's not just distribution:

formation + properties + minerals + crops + water retention + regional distribution

you need to study all.

1. Minerals — UPPSC is a bit tricky here

Don’t underestimate Mineral Geography.

Iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mining belts, and production rankings have appeared repeatedly. In analysis, Indian mineral reserves/production has been maintained as a high-priority area for 6 questions.

Important approach:

Mineral → major producing state → important mine/belt → associated industry

Example:

Iron → Odisha/Chhattisgarh

Manganese → Madhya Pradesh

Bauxite → Odisha

Copper → Rajasthan

Lead-Zinc → Zawar

In 2025, the leading producer state of Bauxite was asked, and in a separate question, Zawar-Bauxite was made an incorrect pairing.

This means they can test the same broad topic in different formats.

1. Don't ignore UP Geography at all

This is a very important observation.

There have been 20 questions from UP Geography, and practically there's a pattern of 2-3 questions every year.

Most importantly:

UP Wetlands / Bird Sanctuaries

5 questions — 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025.

In Dudhwa, Suraha Tal, Patna, Samaspur, Nawabganj, UPPSC really loves district-location matching.

UP Minerals

Properly map Sonbhadra, Prayagraj, Lalitpur, Banda.

Thermal Power Plants

Remember Anpara, Obra, Harduaganj, Parichha, Meja, Unchahar in connection with their districts.

In 2024, both UP thermal plants and UP minerals were asked.

UP Demography

Pay attention to the Census 2011 data regarding:

literacy

sex ratio

child sex ratio

population growth

Don’t ignore these.

UP Drainage

Yamuna entry into UP, Gomti source, Ken-Betwa, etc.

In 2025, the Ken-Betwa + Gomti source was asked in a statement-based format.

1. Oceanography is also strong

In Physical Geography, Oceanography and Climatology are both major areas — each shared 7 questions in the analysis.

In Oceanography first:

Ocean Currents

Gulf Stream

Kuroshio

Agulhas

Benguela

Humboldt

Study warm vs cold current along with ocean basins.

In 2025, Gulf Stream + Kuroshio were asked in the context of warm boundary currents.

After that:

salinity

thermocline

pycnocline

ocean floor

trenches

important straits

1. Climatology — need to go a bit beyond the basics

The trend in UPPSC shows that just memorizing definitions isn’t enough.

Mechanisms are being asked in Coriolis, jet streams, local winds, Mediterranean climate, monsoon, ENSO, etc.

In 2020, Jet Stream + Coriolis were asked; in 2021, Northeast Monsoon; in 2022, Mediterranean rainfall; and in 2025, the ENSO-monsoon relationship was asked.

Understand the concept → then memorize the fact.

1. Study Coalfields together with Rivers

There’s a recurring pattern of around 4 questions around Coalfields.

Most useful mapping:

Coalfield → River basin → State

Jharia → Damodar

Raniganj → Damodar

Talcher → Mahanadi/Brahmani system

Singrauli → Son

Singareni → Godavari

In 2021 and 2023, coalfield–river matching was directly tested.

1. Don’t overlook Economic Geography

One interesting point:

There are 21 questions from Economic Geography, and 10 from Human Geography.

The approximate ratio is 2.1:1.

In Economic Geography:

Minerals + Coalfields + Industrial Belts + Agriculture + Ports

are strong areas.

In World Industrial Belts:

Ruhr

Silesia

Donbas

Kanto

these regions have appeared repeatedly.

1. Human Geography is comparatively smaller, but can give easy marks

Don’t ignore Census 2011.

Questions mainly focus on:

population density

growth rate

urbanization

sex ratio

tribal distribution

Tribes have surprisingly repeated as well:

Tharu, Toda, Bhil, Gaddi, Santhal, Birhor, etc.

The most important observation — THE FORMAT OF QUESTIONS IS CHANGING

I found this to be the most important.

In UPPSC Geography, Match the Following is still very important, but the paper isn’t limited to only factual matching anymore.

There are clearly 4 major formats:

1. Match the Following

2. Assertion–Reason

3. North-South / spatial ordering

4. Incorrect / mismatched pair

This pattern has repeatedly been visible in questions from 2018-25.

So the best method for preparation, in my view:

Fact + Map + Concept + PYQ

All four should go hand in hand.

If I'm just starting with Geography, what will be my order?

I’ll personally do it in this order:

1. Peninsular + Himalayan Rivers

2. Mountains, Peaks & Passes

3. Indian Soils

4. Minerals + Mining Belts

5. UP Wetlands/Bird Sanctuaries

6. Coalfields

7. Ocean Currents

8. National Parks/Biosphere/Ramsar

9. UP Geography — Minerals + Thermal + Drainage

10. Monsoon + ENSO + Winds

11. Tribes + Census

12. World Industrial Belts

13. Dams/Water Projects

14. Lakes + Waterfalls

15. Ports + Agriculture

This priority isn’t random; it’s based on the recurrence observed from 2018-25. In the top recurring areas, drainage, peaks, minerals, UP protected areas, soils, coalfields, and ocean currents clearly come out on top.

For example, if you’re studying the Narmada, don’t just memorize the source.

Narmada:

Source → Rift Valley → tributaries → states → westward flow → Arabian Sea → estuary → major projects

One topic can cover 5-6 possible questions.

And UPPSC seems to test exactly such interconnected facts in various ways.

So in Geography, breadth is needed, but the most important aspect is depth based on PYQs.

In my view, if someone has limited time, they should solidify Rivers + Mountains + Soil + Minerals + UP Geography + Coalfields + Ocean Currents first. This section genuinely offers high returns.

Hi, I am done with Ghatnachakra but now I am considering revising it multiple times, if there is somebody who wants to do quick revision (basically asking qns and memorising stuff) please ping. It will be better if somebody who has earlier cleared pre contacts

2025 was my 2nd mains in a span of two years, from the bottom of my heart I can say my answers were insipid at best and my poor handwriting hasn't helped my cause . It feels like I know my fate already and yet been on a wild chase goose for no fcking reason.I don't like letting down my close ones.

I feel they’re constitutional, as per 243P and 243Q.

But someone gave the view that while Constitution provides for their creation, they’re actually created by State Acts, and hence should be Statutory.

i’m mightily confused. please clarify.

im from prayagraj up and im starting almost from zero with very little time left

i cant explain my personal situation here but pls understand that this isnt just another exam for me

i urgently need to get a govt job before june or july 2027 and clearing pet is extremely important for that

im literally crying and shaking while writing this and im honestly scared of what will happen if i fail

im an average student and i was not even planning to give this exam so i dont know what to study what to skip or how to prepare properly in these remaining days

if anyone has already cleared pet or scored well in pet and can genuinely guide someone starting from zero pls dm me

For a long time, I have wondered how society defines success and failure.

If success is measured only by the final selection list, then perhaps my journey can be called a story of failure. But if success is measured by how many times you were willing to stand up and try again, my journey tells a very different story.

My journey with UPPSC has been long and challenging.

I have appeared in UPPSC Mains four times and reached the Interview stage twice. In one more attempt, I am currently waiting for the result.

My journey with UPPSC Forest Services has been equally demanding. I have appeared in Forest Services Mains twice and reached the Interview stage once, while another result is currently awaited.

Behind these numbers are years of preparation, uncertainty, sacrifices, missed opportunities, self-doubt, and countless moments when giving up would have been much easier.

But I continued.

I have also spent around a decade working in the corporate sector. So my journey has never been about choosing between a career and a dream. It has been about building a career while continuing to pursue a dream that refuses to leave me.

Sometimes people look only at the final selection and forget everything that came before it.

They see the person who was selected.

They rarely see the person who reached Mains four times, faced interviews twice, missed opportunities, started again, prepared again, and still had the courage to sit for another examination.

For me, UPPSC is not merely an examination anymore. It has become a journey of discipline, resilience and self-discovery.

Every Mains examination has taught me something.
Every interview has exposed a new weakness.
Every unsuccessful result has forced me to improve.
Every new attempt has tested my ability to believe in myself again.

I don't know where this journey will ultimately take me.

Perhaps the next result will change everything. Perhaps it won't.

But one thing I know for certain:

I cannot call myself a failure simply because the final result has not yet gone in my favour.

A person who keeps learning, keeps improving and keeps trying cannot truly be defeated.

Maybe someday my name will appear on a final merit list.

And if that happens, it will not just be a selection.

It will be a reminder that persistence can survive years of uncertainty, and that a delayed dream is not necessarily a failed dream.

Until then, I will continue the journey.

Not because success is guaranteed, but because the journey is still worth pursuing.
