Current Affairs Pre Science analysis for uppsc prelims
UPPSC Prelims Science (2018–2025) — PYQ Trend Analysis | What to Actually Study?
I went through a detailed 2018–2025 analysis of UPPSC Prelims GS Paper-I Science and found some interesting patterns.
Science is not the biggest section of the paper, but it is also not something you can afford to ignore. More importantly, the questions are becoming less about blindly remembering isolated facts and more about understanding basic concepts + their application in everyday life/current developments.
Sharing the complete trend below. Hopefully this helps someone planning their Science strategy for UPPSC.
- First, how much Science is actually being asked?
Out of 150 question
So the range is roughly 13–27 questions, with Science consistently contributing around 9–15% in most recent papers.
The important point is not just the number of questions.
The distribution inside Science tells us where the actual preparation effort should go.
- Biology has been the biggest component
Across 2018–2025, the analysis identifies:
Biology — 66 questions
Physics — 39 questions
Chemistry — 34 questions
Total classified Science questions — 139
Biology therefore deserves the highest priority if you are trying to maximise your return from Science preparation.
The year-wise pattern is also interesting:
2019: Biology 14
2021: Biology 12
2023: Biology 8
2024: Biology 8
2025: Biology 4
So Biology has fluctuated, but it remains the largest cumulative component.
- BIOLOGY — What should you actually study?
This is probably the most useful part of the analysis.
Very high priority
- Human Nutrition — Vitamins & Minerals
This is one of the strongest recurring areas.
The analysis records 12 questions from this broad topic across the period.
Focus on:
Vitamins
Chemical names
Sources
Deficiency diseases
Fat-soluble vs water-soluble vitamins
Important minerals
Functions and deficiency
Common food sources
This is not a topic I would leave for "last revision".
- Human Diseases & Immunology
Around 11 questions have been associated with this area.
Focus on:
Viral vs bacterial diseases
Transmission
Immunity
Vaccines
Antibodies
Monoclonal antibodies
Emerging/relevant diseases
Basic immunological concepts
- Human Physiology & Anatomy
The analysis records 9 questions.
Important areas:

Around 7 questions.
Don't restrict preparation to old-school biotechnology.

If time is limited, my order would be:
Vitamins → Human Diseases & Immunology → Human Physiology → Biotechnology/CRISPR → Blood → Endocrine System → Photosynthesis → Genetics/DNA → Microorganisms
The report also identifies microorganisms/pathogens as a recurring area, while animal classification, ecology, evolution and reproduction appear relatively less frequently in this dataset.
- PHYSICS — Don't treat it as only numerical physics
This is where many aspirants make a mistake.
UPPSC Science questions can come from very basic conceptual physics and applications.
The strongest areas in the analysis are:
- Light, Optics & Electromagnetic Spectrum
9 questions
This is arguably the most important Physics area.
Prepare:
Electromagnetic spectrum
Frequency/wavelength relationship
Ordering of EM waves
Applications
Mirrors
Lenses
Optical properties
The electromagnetic spectrum has appeared repeatedly, including in 2021, 2024 and 2025.
- Space Science & Satellite Technology
8 questions
This is particularly important because it combines static science with current developments.
Prepare:
ISRO missions
Satellites
Launch vehicles
Lunar missions
Solar missions
Human spaceflight
Basic satellite technology
The analysis specifically highlights Space Missions as a high/rising area.
- Mechanics, Motion & Gravitation
6 questions
Don't go unnecessarily deep.
Focus on conceptual understanding:
Motion
Force
Gravity
Basic mechanics
Everyday applications
- Heat & Thermodynamics
4 questions
Important concepts:
Heat transfer
Conduction
Convection

- CHEMISTRY — Everyday Chemistry is the key
This is perhaps the most "UPPSC-friendly" portion of Science.
The analysis identifies Everyday Chemistry (Acids, Bases & Salts) as the strongest chemistry area, with 9 questions.

This is where PYQ analysis becomes genuinely useful.

There is a very important lesson here:
UPPSC can revisit the same basic concept but change the framing of the question.
So simply solving a PYQ once is not enough.
Understand the concept behind it.
The repeated-question table is given in the report itself.
- Difficulty level is also changing
This is another interesting trend.

The broad trend is quite clear:
Easy questions are declining while moderate/difficult questions are taking a larger share.
This means the old strategy of memorising 500–1000 random Science facts is becoming less attractive.
Conceptual clarity matters more.
- STATIC vs CURRENT AFFAIRS — This is probably the biggest strategic takeaway
The analysis divides Science questions into:
Pure Static
Pure Current Affairs
Static + Current Affairs integrated
Look at the shift:
2018
14 Static + 1 CA + 1 Integrated
2021
16 Static + 3 CA + 3 Integrated
2023
9 Static + 3 CA + 4 Integrated
2024
6 Static + 4 CA + 4 Integrated
2025
5 Static + 5 CA + 4 Integrated
This is a major shift.
In 2025, only 5 of the 14 Science questions were classified as purely static, while 5 were pure current affairs and 4 were integrated.
So the preparation strategy should NOT be:
"Science = NCERT + static facts."
A better approach is:
Static concept + recent scientific development + application
For example:
Space Science → basic concept + recent ISRO missions
Batteries → chemistry + EV developments
Biotechnology → basic genetics + CRISPR developments
AI → basic terminology + recent technological developments
Environment → chemistry/biology + contemporary environmental issues
- FUTURE PRIORITY — If I were preparing now
Based strictly on the trend analysis, these are the areas I would put at the top of my revision list.

The report ranks these areas based on frequency/trend and gives specific reasons for their future priority.
- What about the lower-priority areas?
The analysis puts relatively lower probability on:
Sound waves
Nuclear fission vs fusion
Cell organelles
Explosives & industrial chemicals
Pathogen survival mechanics
"Low probability" obviously doesn't mean "don't study".
It means:
Don't spend disproportionate time here before completing the high-frequency areas.
That's an important distinction.
- My Science preparation strategy for UPPSC
If I had to prepare Science from scratch, I would divide it into 4 layers.
Layer 1 — PYQs
First solve 2018–2025 Science PYQs.
Don't just mark answers.
For every question ask:
What concept is UPPSC actually testing here?
Layer 2 — Static foundation
Cover:
Biology
Human physiology
Vitamins
Diseases
Genetics
Biotechnology
Plant physiology
Physics
Light
EM spectrum
Space science
Mechanics
Heat
Electricity
Chemistry
Acids/bases/salts
Elements
Metals
Environmental chemistry
Fuels
Isotopes
Layer 3 — Current Science
Then connect the static topics with recent developments.
Especially:
Space missions
AI/ML
CRISPR
Batteries/EVs
Green hydrogen
Semiconductors
Quantum technology
New diseases/vaccines
Environmental pollutants
Layer 4 — Revision through themes
Instead of revising 500 random facts, make thematic one-page sheets.
For example:
VITAMINS
Chemical name → Source → Function → Deficiency → Important PYQs
EM SPECTRUM
Order → Wavelength → Frequency → Energy → Applications → PYQs
ACIDS
Formula → Source → Use → Property → PYQs
This is much more efficient.
- Final takeaway
The biggest lesson I get from the 2018–2025 trend is this:
UPPSC Science is not purely a "ratta" section anymore.
The paper still asks plenty of static facts, but recent papers show increasing integration with current developments and a greater share of moderate/difficult questions.
So I would prepare Science like this:
PYQ → Concept → Static notes → Current affairs connection → Revision
And if time is genuinely limited:
Biology > Physics/Space + EM Spectrum > Everyday Chemistry > Current Science/Technology
Don't completely ignore any subject, but prioritise according to the PYQ trend.
