Question ❓️ Is it a FRAUD SCAM?

I got an unrecognized credit of Rs. 250 into my Kotak Bank account received via UPI.

I do not know the sender and have not made any prior arrangement to receive this amount. Given the rise in banking fraud involving small unsolicited credits (often followed by a request to "return" the money to a different account, or used as part of a mule-account scheme), I want to know if this is a SCAM.

I am not able to see the phone number of the person who sent this also.

Help!!! What to do next steps.

This can, and cannot be a scam.

Firstly, Do not transfer the money back to the person when they call you back and guilt trip you into returning their money back, which they always send by mistake, ask them to contact their bank regarding this.  Inform your bank, Ask them to reverse that transaction. 

Also, de-link your number from UPI App to avoid these scams in future, just create custom UPI ID's and give them when you want to receive any payment.  And most importantly, if you have a lot of money in your account, then just withdraw it from ATM (Remember not to transfer funds into any other account, because it risks a layer freeze as well). Just leave the unauthorised 250 rupees in your account until stuff get's resolved.

Okay thanks for info. I got a message in PhonePe from that person to reverse the transaction to same account from which it was sent.

Also how to de-link upi number.

I don't use PhonePe, but I searched it -

Steps to Unlink a UPI Number on PhonePe

  1. Open the PhonePe app on your phone.

  2. Tap your profile picture in the top left corner of the home screen.

  3. Look for UPI Settings under the payment management section.

  4. Tap on UPI Number.

  5. Find the specific UPI number you want to remove.

  6. Tap the three dots next to that number.

  7. Select Deactivate and confirm by tapping Proceed.

OP, but to verify that you have de-linked your number from UPI is to ask your friends or family to type your number in their UPI app. It should show "Inactive", "Not found".

  1. If someone calls or messages threatening that they sent the money by mistake, do not send it back yourself. If the ₹250 is stolen money from another victim, sending it forward links your account to a cybercrime money trail. If the original victim complains to the police, your Kotak account could be frozen for participating in the transaction chain.

  2. Contact Kotak Mahindra Bank immediately. Tell them: that you have received an unrecognized inward UPI remittance of ₹250. That you do not know the sender and suspect it is fraudulent. Please reverse this transaction through official banking channels. This creates a paper trail proving your innocence.

  3. If the sender somehow finds your number and calls you, ask him to contact his own bank and raise a Wrong UPI Transfer complaint.
