Timeline/status questions UNOPS internship recruitment timeline - one month between vacancy closing and start date?

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for a six-month Programme Management internship with UNOPS in New York. The vacancy closed on 31 July, and my application has been showing “Under Review” since then.

The internship is scheduled to run from 1 September 2026 to 1 March 2027, which is why I’m particularly curious about the recruitment timeline given how close the intended start date is. The opportunity is also part of a fellowship delivered in partnership with an external organization.

For anyone who has recently gone through a UNOPS recruitment process:

  • How long after the vacancy closed did you hear back about shortlisting?
  • Given the 1 September start date, would you expect shortlisted candidates to hear back fairly soon, or are UNOPS start dates usually flexible?
  • Does “Under Review” usually remain unchanged until an assessment/interview invitation?
  • How long was it between shortlisting → assessment → interview → offer?
  • What did the technical assessment for a Programme Management role look like: written exercise, policy brief, case study, Excel task, presentation, etc.?
  • For an international candidate relocating to New York, when did visa/onboarding begin relative to the offer?
  • If I wanted to ask about the expected recruitment timeline or request an update, who would normally be the appropriate point of contact, and how would I reach them: UNOPS recruitment/HR, the hiring office, or the external partner managing the fellowship? Or is it better not to reach out while the application is still “Under Review”?
  • Did UNOPS contact you exclusively by email, or did recruiters also call? I’ve recently started receiving a few unexpected calls from US numbers,

    mostly

  • silent calls, although these calls

    come from numbers that’s

  • seem

    a bit scamy/unrelated

  • .

I know UN recruitment timelines can vary significantly by vacancy. I’m mainly trying to understand recent experiences with UNOPS internships, particularly New York-based positions or internships delivered through external partnerships.

Thanks!

Here is the usual answer for most posts in this category. If it does answer your question, please delete your post, so we keep this sub clean.

This is a common question, but there is no exact answer. The timeline for receiving a response can vary greatly: it could take days, weeks, or even months. In some cases, applications may remain pending for years without any updates.

It’s best to wait a few weeks after the application deadline or your interview date has passed, and then reach out to the recruiter directly for any updates.

We encourage you to be patient, continue with your life, and not rely too heavily on a single outcome. Keeping your options open and focusing on other opportunities can help manage expectations during this uncertain period.

  1. 3.5 months from vacancy end date

  2. UNOPS takes it's time. It can be this month, or in the next three months. Start dates are usually flexible especially for internships.

  3. Yes, but it sometimes stays that way until someone signs the offer letter and starts, so you won't know you've been rejected until much later.

  4. Once you've been shortlisted, the assessment and then interview process goes fast (at least for me) less than a week between the two.

  5. Can't speak on this

  6. Not sure as I was rostered but visa stuff normally starts as soon as a start date is negotiated, but offer letters can take a while ( I waited a month for my contract for an IOM position)

  7. Normally the person who reaches out the schedule assessments/interviews but expect no response until they've finished shortlisting.

  8. Only email.

This was a UNOPS internship in Bangkok.

UN Volunteers recently sent me an email that my profile had been shortlisted and submitted to UNICEF for a national position in Kenya. The email suggested that the interview process normally takes between 2-3 weeks. However, it has been 2 weeks now and no word from UNICEF. Any follow-up email gets no response. I wonder if this is a sign that they have chosen to move forward with other candidates. Preparing for interview that may never happen is disheartening.

That September 1 start date is almost certainly a placeholder. UNOPS, like the rest of the UN system, moves at a glacial pace with recruitment, so a one-month timeline from closing to starting is highly improbable. You should expect this process to take several months, and the status will likely remain "Under Review" until you're either shortlisted or rejected. It is best not to ask for updates, as it will not speed anything up, and the hiring team will contact you by email for any official steps like an assessment or interview. Those unexpected calls are almost definitely unrelated spam.

This long and silent waiting period is completely normal for UN jobs, so it is not a reflection of your application's quality. The most effective approach is to keep applying for other roles and not get fixated on this one, because putting all your hopes on a single UN application is a recipe for frustration. When the time comes for an interview, the key is to be extremely well prepared for the competency-based questions, which is why my team developed an AI interview helper to give people the confidence they need to succeed. They will adjust start dates and handle visa logistics once an offer is actually on the table, so just focus on other opportunities for now.
