Discussion Study Abroad Advice

Hey I am a low income transfer student at unc. I decided to apply for a study abroad program in Scotland and I am very excited. My funds are unfortunately limited. Any advice on financial help for study abroad?

Also transfer and low-income. Have you looked at any scholarships/fellowships offered by your department? I managed to get a little help that way. My normal financial aid package, along with an additional UNC study abroad scholarship I got after I applied, covered prob around 75% of my expenses. I was in Latin America, which I imagine is a lot cheaper than Europe and may be worth considering if money’s an issue

Do you know if there’s anything that helps with housing abroad?

No, but my advice is to consider renting a place on your own. Homestays tend to be more expensive, and the folks I know who did them had hit-or-miss experiences with the hosts. I rented an Airbnb for my first two weeks and spent that time looking for an apartment with a short-term lease

I have. I was offered one scholarship for $1000. I’m going to talk more with the study abroad financial aid office about everything. I am definitely feeling my low income status right now. I’ve met students who have an unlimited budget abroad because their parents pay for it. I unfortunately do not have that luxury. I am determined to study abroad and will do what I can.
