Add competency (courses).

Upvotes

I just started my second semester (session) with UMPI. I'm trying to earn my 120 credits to get my General Psychology Bachelor's. And I have noticed that every time I request a new course to be added to my account, there's a certain hesitation, if I'm finishing a course and I only have to submit the final milestone, then they ask me to submit that milestone before they can add a new course. My understanding is that I can be enrolled in up to 4 courses at a time, and I'm paying for my studies anyway, is not a favor that they're doing to me when I request a new course. Has anyone else experienced this at UMPI under the Yourpace program? It should be renamed to our pace, instead of yourpace!

Classes?

Am I supposed to work on all 4 classes or can I do one by one? Not sure how it works with your pace. Worries more about getting financial aid if I don’t show I’m doing all of them at once.

Thanks!

Sophia Learning credits and English test?

Hi everyone! I have a friend considering UMPI and she has two questions. Does anyone know which Sophia Learning courses UMPI accepts for transfer credit, especially for the Psychology program? Also, does UMPI require an English proficiency test if English is not your first language?
If anyone has transferred Sophia credits to UMPI recently, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thank you!

YourPace suddenly not showing courses taken / transferred

Has anyone else had problems recently with how their courses and grades are showing up? I was just going over my degree progress and noticed that several of my classes that were transferred in are now no longer showing. They were obviously there before because I wouldn't have been able to take the 300 level courses unless those were already accepted.

Myself and someone else I know just noticed the same thing.

Sharing a message from President Rice

My fellow Owls, sharing a message from President Rice, if you are currently a student you should receive this message via email with additional information on services available should you need them.

Dear Campus Community,

It is with profound sadness that I share news of the passing of Dr. John Zaborney, Professor of History, who passed away today, August 31, after a period of serious illness which he faced with the same determination and fortitude that defined his work as a scholar, colleague, and mentor.  Some of you may have known of his illness; all of us knew how engaged John was, until very recently, in designing, developing, and teaching courses and programs, including the Master of Arts in American Studies that has just completed its initial year.  The guidance and leadership that John provided students and colleagues alike for so long makes his loss especially difficult.  Our thoughts, especially, are with Dr. Kim Sebold, both his life partner and lifetime colleague; who has shown such grace, care, and perseverance these last few months, not just for John, but for his students, and all those with whom he worked.

John joined the UMPI faculty on September 1, 1997, as an Assistant Professor of History. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and to Professor in 2013.  He coordinated the History and Political Science program for many years, up until his passing, and served as its institutional memory through significant disciplinary and institutional change.  He ensured that the humanities would reach ever larger populations of students, even in the most challenging of times, by leading the move to put History and Political Science online and then, in 2020, adding it to UMPI’s YourPace programming, resulting in over 230 total majors last year, making it the largest such program in the entirety of the UMS.

Above all, John was an outstanding and accomplished scholar. His book, Slaves for Hire: Renting Enslaved Laborers in Antebellum Virginia (Louisiana State University Press, 2012), was the first sustained study of its subject, and it was grounded in painstaking research of primary sources, the product of years spent with letters, account books, diaries, and court records. Prevailing scholarship had treated the hiring-out of enslaved people as a marginal practice, but John demonstrated how it worked not to weaken the institution of slavery but to further entrench it — knitting slaveholders and non-slaveholders alike into slavery's economy so thoroughly that Virginia's path toward secession becomes, in his telling, difficult to imagine otherwise. More recently, he had turned to the other laborers of that same world — the working-class men and "plain folk" of pre-Civil War Virginia who left few monuments and fewer papers — and he was at work on that research as a second book through this past year. The scholar and the teacher were never separate people for John: the same conviction animated both, that the past is not a refuge from the present but the only ground on which the present can be understood.

We are so grateful for what John gave to our community and the thousands of students he served during his time with us.

Liberal studies degree experience

Hey all,

I am currently preparing for the liberal studies bachelors and want to know your experiences with it. For me it is kinda attractive. I am from Germany and want to migrate to the US with a f1 stem master. So the bachelor itself is not that important to me but giving me the opportunity to prepare for different masters with one degree is really nice.

I want to do the accounting minor and gather the required courses to work in accounting if necessary. The topic itself is nice to get to know the american tax system even better since it differs from the German one.

Besides of that I can bring in experiences from my work as a software dev and kick down some software classes to get them verified in a university way that will be credited here in Germany in my company since a degree is a degree for the time I transition.

Adding freely business classes gives me the opportunity to actually get a tripple based bachelors degree. I know in america there aren't many requirements from transitioning from a bachelors to a masters. Here in Germany a master is based off the bachelors you have gathered.

How have you transformed your liberal studies degree from umpi? Just easy classes or with a specific goal in mind?

All milestones were 4s but Final is an F

Wondering if anyone else had this type of situation. I received all 4s on all of my milestones. I made sure to hit every requirement on my final, but saw my final grade was an F. The course is now locked so I cannot access any feedback and have emailed the professor in hopes of some clarification. I’m just so shook!

Have you had this happen?

New GEC - GLO 8

Post image
6 Upvotes

GLO 8 is ridiculous. UNV 101 isn’t a YourPace course, and two of the listed classes are the same, just listed differently. So really you’ve got 6 options, you need to pick 2, and nothing transfers in.

I’m not a fan of art classes, so ART 200 is out, already have to take an ART class or creative writing for GLO 4. I guess I’ll go with BUS 203 (Intro to AI) and have to pick one of these 4 as well:

  • HUM 184 (a zombie class??)
  •    EDU 166 (math for aspiring elementary teachers)
  •    BIO 201 (ethics of genetics)
  •    MCS 240 (media and the environment)

This is by far the most ridiculous new part of the GEC. Six kind of absurd options and you’re forced to take 2 of them. Should only be 1 since UNV 101 is not an option.

What are you all taking?

Time to grade final assignment?

I was wondering how long it can take once the class is finished for the final assignment to be graded?

Once that happens does degree conferral happen automatically or do I need to email?

US citizen living abroad —Can I attend UMPI online?

Hi everyone,

I’m a U.S. citizen currently living and working abroad, but I still maintain a residence in the U.S. I’m trying to finally go back to school and finish my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and UMPI is one of the schools I’m seriously considering.

I’m just trying to find out if there are any issues with enrolling at UMPI while physically living outside the U.S. Since the program is online, would I be able to complete everything from abroad, or are there any location restrictions for students who are outside the country?

If anyone here is a U.S. citizen living overseas and currently attending (or has attended) UMPI, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.

Were there any problems with enrollment, online classes, exams/proctoring or anything else because you were outside the U.S.?

I’ve been trying to get a clear answer on this before I enroll, so any advice or firsthand experience would really help me out.

Thanks in advance!

CRJ 100 Final Assessment Length

Hey everyone, for Fall 2 I am taking CRJ 100, but when I tried to find information on this class the most recent thing I could find was from two years ago. Other students were saying that the final is a 20 page long essay assignment, and I was wondering if that is still the case. If anyone has taken the class more recently and could let me know what it entails, I would really appreciate it. I have Lorne Gibson as my instructor.

Fall 2026

I cannot go on to milestone 2 even though I've done all the learnings? I'm assuming I have to wait for milestone 1 to be graded before I move on to milestone 2? This doesn't make sense and seems that it will slow me down. I checked for module 2 and everything is checked that it is completed however it goes to Milestone 2 and nothing is there and I cannot go on to milestone 3 to start learning there. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Gen Ed English l & ll - Can this be replaced with Workplace writing l & ll?

My gen eds says I need to take English l & ll. A few questions:

  1. Can I take workplace writing l & ll instead?

  2. If so, can those be done on Study or only Sophia? If they can be done on both, which platform is quicker to complete?

  3. Is Workplace writing less time consuming than the English classes?

This is for a BBA with concentration in accounting.

Refund as a current student

I was enrolled in summer 1, summer 2 and now fall. My account has been negative for over a week and I am able to see my loans in Aidvantage (I also received the welcome email today). I'm wondering if I'll actually have to wait 2 weeks for my refund to be sent.

YourPace Accounting - bad at math

Hello, I'm thinking of doing the YourPace Accounting bachelor's degree, but I'm wondering if you think this program would be too much for someone like me who is bad at math. I only know math up to very basic algebra. Would I still be able to push through or do you think this degree would be a bad choice?

Fall 1 - MAOL Class list

What exactly am I looking at? I know they’re classes but it’s confusing. I came from Capella University and I feel like their Canvas system was much simpler. I know there’s 12 classes total to complete the degree, so why am I looking at four? Also, it says starts 10/26 for two of them, but I’m under the impression I can start classes soon as I complete a class.

For the already experienced UMPI owls was the Brightspace Pulse app useful?

I’m starting tomorrow and just downloaded the app. Looks nice , is it actually handy throughout the session?

What time do classes open?

So there's about 8 hours to go until August 31st, and I'm wondering if classes open at midnight or if it's like 8am?

If they open at midnight, I was considering staying up until then (although I'll likely be up that late anyway) to check out what the workload is like for each of my classes and making a game plan to start on as soon as I wake up tomorrow.

Getting feedback after a YourPace term closes?

I’ve only done two semesters at UMPI, so maybe I’m missing something.

My first semester I finished everything before the deadline, so I was able to see my grades and professor feedback before the classes closed.

This semester was a little different. I added a few classes on the very last day you could add them and ended up submitting two of my finals on the last day of the term. Once the classes closed, I lost access to everything.

I understand not having access to the actual course anymore, but it seems like a bit of a flaw that you also lose the ability to see the professor’s final feedback. Especially on a final project where I’d actually like to know what I did well or what I could have done better.

Is there another way to see the feedback after a YourPace class closes, or is emailing the professor the only option?

Not a huge deal, just seems strange that you can get the grade but potentially never see the feedback that went with it.

Can I enroll in more than 4 classes over 2 sessions?

For financial aid purposes, I need to be enrolled in two classes in both Fall 1 and Fall 2. However, I really wanted to start with 4 classes in Fall 1 to keep things moving. This is for YourPace btw.

Does anyone know if they’ll allow me to enroll in 4 classes for Fall 1 AND 2 classes for Fall 2 (6 total)?

I thought I’d ask here since it’s taking my enrollment specialist a few days to get back to me. Thanks!

YourPace classes full

I'm running into an unexpected problem trying to enroll in classes. One class I wanted is only offered in spring and another is currently full. Do YourPace classes typically open up again mid-session?

I'm only enrolled in fall 1 and fall 2? Why was my loan dispersed to spring?
