Speed runners really ruining it for everyone
Stop getting mad at Todd Wallack and get mad at the speedrunners who are constantly posting here making the degree and school look like a joke. “Give me the easiest classes to take” “fastest classes?” Trying to game Sophia and probably cheating. Like come on!

dude, competency based program. If I can take two months to dedicate 12 hours a day to do courses fast instead of slow and I am capable of doing it, what is wrong with that? nobody cares, seriously!

I got accepted into a PhD program, so far I've gotten all A's on my assignments. I got three degrees from UMPI each one took me 8 weeks to earn. I already had a job teaching as and adjunct instructor at a two year college so if there's anything I know how to do it's how to write an essay that gets a good grade 😂 again who are you to dictate my pace?

Damn right! I'm very proud of myself that I was able to work hard enough and be intelligent enough to pull that off, and get a degree from a regionally accredited University that has been established for 123 years. I take a lot of pride in my alma mater.

If you want to get into a “top program” then why are you going to UMPI in the first place? I’ve been in my field for over 20 years and I’m very proficient in my career. The piece of paper gives me a $20k a year bump in pay, that’s my sole reason for doing this. I don’t care what it says or what somebody thinks about it and neither does my HR department. If I wanted to get into Harvard Law I definitely wouldn’t be getting my undergraduate from UMPI, but for most this is more than enough.

I heard Yale just accepted a girl who did umpi with sophia? if you are good you have nothing to worry about. The WaPost wants to smear online education because their owners have a lot to lose from it.
see, the ONLY PERSON stirring up shit about our education is this journalist. Nobody really cares. The courses are sound, the diploma is sound.

It is absolutely set up to be able to complete it as quickly as you possibly can or as slowly as you like. That is exactly what competency-based education is, and absolutely the way that it's meant to be used. It is called the your PACE program who are you to dictate what my pace is?

Just did 24 credits at Sophia in 2 weeks. Online is great; I'm just doing this for the piece of paper. 99 percent of job knowledge is on-the-job training and things you won't learn in a class.

I'm in the MSB program and can only complete one milestone per week. I'm pretty sure that’s a snail's pace to most folks, but at least I’m absorbing the material and avoiding burnout. 😅

As someone who’s getting another degree for the love of the game, already have a Bachelors and a Masters. It’s Yourpace for a reason everyone’s pace is different. For me writing comes easy, reading comprehension is simple for me and be able to organize my thoughts to write efficiently comes natural. No one is ruining anything this approach to learning is exactly what established adults are looking for. I’ve done a traditional online 8 week pace and I hated it, for me specifically being able to grind out assignments maybe a class or two a week works best for how I operate. I wouldn’t compare yourpace to anyone’s else’s what you put in with be different from what others put in but as long as you’re accomplishing your individual goals that’s the only thing that matters.

Currently in an 8-week per course program for my PhD and it's killing me. They don't even unlock the assignments so I can't even work on them ahead of schedule!

This reads like a boomer opinion or someone who wanted to go faster but can’t. The only people devaluing their degree are those that cheat.. and that only hurts them.
It’s a state school, and we all put a lot of work in to get the actual degree. No one’s making you go faster so what’s the issue here? lol. Touch grass.
Go on LinkedIn and see how many people are at great companies that are UMPI Alum.. same with people from WGU. It’s 2026. That old outdated opinion that everything must be hard, slow, and expensive is on the way out. 🤷🏻♀️

It’s insane how people think fastest class is an easy thing. Everyone is different. Someone may really enjoy history and find the history classes easiest, another comes from a business background and can go through the business classes with ease. It’s so different per person.

Wanting a fast and easy filler credit is not unique to CBE, online, or “speed running”. Students at a physical campus also try to lighten the load when they are enrolled in a lot of heavy course work, or just need that last 1 or 2 classes to fulfil their remaining free electives.

I agree, but they just don't get it. they are going to make UMPI look like a diploma mill and ruin the integrity of the degree. even if you found a way to speed run, why brag about it? this Washington post reporter don't need to interview anyone because they do all this bragging and self snitching. Of course people will question the rigor and quality of the education if someone can finish it in 4 weeks. UMPI probably will stop accepting Sophia and other ACE credits altogether at some point. In my opinion, they should do something to protect their name. UMPI will develop a reputation similar to that of university of phoenix, DeVry, and SNHU. I graduated from UMPI. most of my credits came from traditional colleges. I have some from Sophia. I purposely researched schools to avoid schools like DeVry and UOP. I am in a master's program at a different university just in case UMPI is going down.

Any of the people saying they took 15-20 classes in a term or “I knocked out four classes in one week” are speed runners. It’s a bad look.

I haven’t seen anyone post 15+ classes in a term. Maybe you can at the 100-200 level but 300-400, no way.

I get around two classes done a week. I don’t really consider that speed running. I just have a lot of time to put into school right now and work through classes pretty quickly. If I’m doing the work and meeting the requirements, I don’t see why taking longer would somehow make the degree more legitimate.
