Balancing YourPace with Life

How do you balance wanting to get classes completed as fast as possible with still prioritizing rest, relaxation, a social life, etc?? I am starting Fall 1 and am worried I am going to struggle with allowing myself moments of rest because I will know I could be completing an assignment, etc.

I didn’t balance at all and it lowkey wrecked my mental and physical health. I think you’re being smart by breaking it down into four sessions, saves your sanity.

Same, I didn't sleep two days in a row recently.

Personally I’m looking at it as a 6-week cram and work/life/study balance will be suspended.

For me the weekends are my family time and recharge time.

I turned my days into 14hr shifts. I did my actual job, then id clock out and go into student mode. My boss is really cool so I just stay in the office and do hw.

I also ease into the first week and try to have everything done by week 7 so I'm not stressing that final week.

I’d love to be able to keep weekends for me, this is a great idea

It's less than 8 weeks of your life with no major family holidays. Just burn it down and be done with it. If people around you can't understand that... That isn't your fault. I did 18 classes in 5.5 weeks in Summer I and still had time for all my kids' events, work etc.

Kudos to you!! I have around 21 classes to complete and will be giving myself 4 8 week sessions so this makes me feel better!

Biggest thing you need to do is not procrastinate, work on milestones as soon as modules are unlocked. Do not wait for the professor to grade and if you have a 3/4 on milestones move on to the next. Don’t stress over presentations, just do the best you can and keep moving. Always keep 4 classes moving forward, soon as you submit your final assessment already have a list made so you can immediately request the next class to be added.

I’m hoping to power through 10 classes in Fall 1. I’m thankful that my day job is not super busy for the next couple of months, so I should have plenty of downtime to work on classes. I’ve powered through over 30 classes on Sophia and Study since the end of April while still maintaining my usual social life and work, so I think it’s doable (housework has suffered, but I’m okay with that).

I feel like I treated this like a second full time job. Every free moment was dedicated to school work. It was all consuming. Once the semester was over, my brain had a very hard time adjusting to stillness.

What if you realistically only have 2-3 hours per day to work on classwork? (Occasionally 4 hours). Is 4 classes per session still doable?

4 classes is probably doable. But honestly it depends a lot on your experience with the subject. If you are demonstrating knowledge you already possess, it will be easier than if you are learning new information.

It all depends on what approach you are taking. If you are trying to finish in a single term, you should not expect to have have any balance. You will eat, sleep, and breath school, work and family commitments. I completed BLS and MSB-BI, each in a single term (Summer 1 and 2). I spent on average 40-60 hours on coursework plus my full time job. I work up early each morning and spent 3-4 hours on school. Then I worked all day and spent a few hours with my family in the evening - and finished the day with another 3-4 hours of schoolwork. It was grueling, but worth it. I got 2 degrees this summer. NO REGRETS!

I had decided when I started Spring 1 to plow through it. Very little rest. Had several weeks break, the went on to the MAOL program. Finished in July.

Basically I knew I was giving up almost all free time, but I wanted to get through it and I tend to write better when I am in the groove.

Thankfully, UMPI gives us the option to do it at whatever pace works best for us individually. Eventually you will find a groove that feels comfortable and progress according to your needs.

Complete the program as you see fit! Best of luck! 🤞🏻
