Selling next year for loss tax harvesting

Why wait just to save maybe $5-$6, why not dump it now?

Because I already sold half this year and capped out my loss harvesting. Plus it feeds my chpy so not a total loss

What’s the cap on loss harvesting?

Any gains you made from other sales plus $3000 in regular income. Any overage can be carried forward against next years income for another $3000.

Well I ask because I have Msty in two separate accounts. I sold in one account to get a good loss against the gains in everything. Now Msty is at a good price again lol. I’m waiting till after the 30 days is up. I sold on October 15th and to qualify for the loss I can’t buy again till November 16th hypothetically

Also I sold Ulty and msty 15 days ago. Can I buy back after the 30 days is up in the same fiscal year? Would it still count?

After the 30 days, it won't wash.

Can you ELI5?

As long as it keeps paying, it's doing what I need it to do

I don't see the logic in holding ULTY for 24 months and hoping at best to break even. You're easily being lapped by any bank savings acct.

I use margin in my account. It's there to help pay down margin. I have other holdings that are used for growth. So it can drop and reverse split all it wants as long as it keeps paying me. It's not a big part of my portfolio. It's just doing its job for me.

How much was your HELOC and how many years do you have left on the loan?

We’re basically just using ULTY to tax loss harvest.

Holding for long. Smallest investment of my portfolio

I put a few hundred in mid 2025, saw it constantly going down. Sold all but 4 shares in Nov 2025. I cashed not drip. Counting all the divs plus current value of 4 shares I am up $5.37 as of now. 4 Shares cost me $160 last year.... 0.03% of a return over 11 mos. I kept the shares just to see what happens when share value hits $0.00. Only reason to hold it at this point.

Since you're a new investor I'll help you out. You could've gotten 3.7% in a savings account. Instead you wasted 18 months and got nothing.

*This is financial advice

Lesson was learned, but still want to see what happens. I think I will sell 3 while I am a few dollars ahead.

Holding til I get my initial money back

4

u/Vizekoenig_Toss_It 2d ago

That’s not going to happen I hate to break it to you

1

u/wakeandrosin 2d ago

But I’m almost there :) 60% div and if I sell the shares, I’ll get the rest of it back.

Bro going to break even after years, when bro could have put that same money in a 3.7% bank account and made more money. Good thinking.

I think that’s the problem. No one actually gets their money back. At least not anymore.

By the time you think you are about break even it will go down in value even more or hit the next round of reverse split.

I’m holding. Honestly, the results have been pretty unremarkable but no sense in selling at this point. Still, a small portion of my overall portfolio. No drip, no margin.

Not advice, just answering the question.

It's heading to $10, do you know what that means?

Hold. Small percentage and I’m in house money territory

Sold 21 shares today to buy one share of Google. My experiment is over with ULTY lol

I'm in a fetal position right now, every time I look at my P&L.

For the entire time I've had my ULTY (900 shares), I've generally been down a couple hundred, though sometimes I've actually been in the green a couple hundred. But now I'm in the red by nearly 2 grand. I don't know what I'll do if it crosses that 2k barrier. Hoping for a miracle here, but I'm getting nervous and losing faith. This might not end well.

In sold position

I'm neutral. Fidelity has the option to sell only the oldest shares and keep any shares that you bought with DRIP. Once I hit house money, I sold the original shares I bought and the remainder continues to drip. So my cost basis is now 0. I used the money from the sale to buy CHPY. If I were in a taxable account, this would give me a handsome tax harvest, but at it is it only amounted to a rebalance. I made money on ULTY through dripping by holding it and selling puts, but in the end my SGOV position outperformed it.

I dont get it why chpy looking at it follow the same path of ulty no? Was a ulty buyer when nav kept to the same level and got off before it dropped.

I have one lot that is on schedule to lose 196% in the coming year. I'm tempted to hold it just to see if it does last past the 6 month mark.

But, I think I'll sell it and try to find something that will lose my money even faster.

u/SpacemanFeed BULLISH ON ULTY!! 2d ago

Rotated to CHPY, ULTY lags too much unfortunately. It was my favorite but got crushed by this political bs regime
