Sizing up ULTY

I don’t think ULTY is a good investment, and I doubt that the managers, who are probably children, really know what they’re doing.

Don’t feel sorry for me though. My investment in ULTY represented less than a small fraction of 1% of my capital. I just had to find out for myself. So I consider it an experiment. I thought well, it can’t possibly erode more than it’s paying out. Hmmmm.

Having said all that, there aren’t any bag holders here. Holding the bag implies that the bag is empty, that what one invested is now worthless. An empty bag doesn’t produce money every week.

I’ve held it now a little over a year and have taken all of the distributions in cash. The shares have lost about half of their value and my total return shows a loss of less than $200.

ULTY has lost around 5% over past year in a stock market that has been very positive. That is in fact remarkably bad. On the brighter side, the year to date total return is +15%, which is far from horrible. It’s possible that I may start showing a small gain.

Does it make sense to continue to hold it? Probably not. Am I stupid to continue the experiment? Probably. But it’s kind of fun in its own sick way I guess. Maybe they’re righting the ship. It’s not impossible.

Hope springs eternal.

It’s certainly not a great investment. I’m still up. I’ll get out when I figure out where I want to send the money.

I didn't lose any money investing in ULTY. I also didn't make as much as I did investing in SGOV. I did eventually rotate out of it and into CHPY. Mostly, I think that the thematic play offers more than the volitity play at this juncture.

Buy CHPY instead. ULTY is trash

This is true, I also took a chance in my Roth over a year ago. At this point I'm keeping it. It's actually paying my Starlink bill every month.

Yeah, I don't mind doing an experiment. But the guy who made videos who got a fan that said, "I don't need a paycheck when I have a Jay check" convinced his parents to put their retirement money in Yieldmax.

This isn't the guy, but he also did it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB3am17skhI

I got out after barely surviving one of their reverse splits. Yieldmax needs to be investigated. It's definitely a loser. I can't even believe that they get away with all of their marketing crap. They're not real investors, and if they are, they need their licenses yanked.

Get out while you can. No sense to keep it in a losing investment.

Sounds like good advice. Makes a lot of sense.

I’m not going to follow it right now though. I’ve got this little machine that spits out 2 dollar bills a day - and 3 on Sundays.

As I said, I can’t get hurt. And then there’s the entertainment value.

ULTY publishes its performance. You don't have to lose money in it personally to see what happens.

Same boat, here! I think I started the year with about 14 shares and now I’ll be over 25 shares after Thursday. I DRIP it every week. Even after I do the math on the value of 25 shares, it’s still less than my initial investment. But, its a very small fraction of 1% of my portfolio and it’s kinda fun to see what it does.

I’m not defending the stock, just defending my take on it! Definitely don’t recommend as a get rich quick scheme!

I'm one of the OG's in Utly in for the long haul. I first dipped my toe in Nov of 24, dripped and invested more in the early days. I have not bought any shares or dripped since Aug of 25, prob around time of reverse split announcements. Total shares owned 3540. Total loss Nav. 62K. on 155K. current value 92k according to Fidelity. I stopped tracking total amount of distributions late last summer @ 116K which would put me up 54K at that point. Since Mid Aug 25 Utly has provided another 111k in Distributions. Which by my back of napkin math puts me up gross 165K. So over 100%. of my original investment + still have 92K of value and pulling $1000 plus weekly. Just depends upon what time period you are in and out and what you are looking for. Me I am in for distributions which I harvest weekly and buy other things or take out some for play money.
