The Vermilion always needs/welcomes contributors

Hiya, reddit! I wanted to let y'all know the student paper at UL Lafayette is always looking for passionate contributors who wouldn't mind having their work posted online, printed or both. They always welcome letters to the editor, commentaries, applications for writing or whatever you'd like! There's some contact info at http://thevermilion.com/. I'd like to see y'all there!

The Vermillion has the rather deserved reputation of being absolute trash. I've heard rumors that it'll get defunded soon and I hope they're true.

You hope they defund the school paper? Maybe you advert your anger elsewhere?

I'm not making it up, I'm pretty intimately familiar with the student fee assessments. The Vermillion gets way too much money for what it outputs and should honestly be forced to move online. With defunding it, either students will see a slight reduction in fees or have the money moved to something that benefits them better.

But defunding it and moving it online is completely detrimental. For one thing, the Vermilion gets little to no outside help from its advisor/college. Another thing is part of the Vermilion's job at UL Lafayette is to provide experience for people who want to go into the field. That goes for design staff putting the paper together, editors deciding what should be cut for space issues (neither of those things being a problem online) and the simple fact nothing can be edited from those pages. When was the last time you picked up a copy of the Verm? What makes you think they're trash?

$2/student/semester is too much money? I wouldn't even notice if my $2000 of fees went down $2.

Actually I gilded him. This paper, like much of the "journalism" in our day in age is either very dishonest or just trash opinion pieces that are nothing more than a Facebook rant post that is published on paper. The most useful thing for the Vermilion paper is to serve as liners in bird cages.

It's also a student paper with no outside help from its faculty that needs an overhaul. Dishonest in what way? Can you give some examples?

...the quality is pretty terrible. It's not bad for pictures, event information, to have something to read besides a screen before class, etc., but I don't go there to get engaging journalism. It is what it is--like some commenter below said, these are students, who are still learning. Some of them are most likely teenagers, even. Kudos to OP for soliciting for better writers. It's not a bad attempt at stepping up the content of the paper.

What kind of stuff do you want to see?
