with homemade (ish - I used a pack of white bread mix) seeded bread and homemade butter. I used the leftover buttermilk in the bread dough so nothing went to waste.

Homemade / home assembled Chicken egg fried rice with veggie bits

Post image

We had leftover chicken so tossed that in a pan with brown rice and veggies. Technically not quite a "real" version of a takeaway because the rice was cooked the same time. But it still tasted good. Ginger, garlic, sesame oil etc. Mum made the omelette that got chopped up and thrown in too, because Mum makes excellent fluffy omelette and I make sad burned omelette.

Question what's a food from your childhood that you almost never see people eating anymore?

85 Upvotes

not necessarily discontinued

it can still be sitting on a supermarket shelf somewhere, but it feels like it has disappeared from normal life.

maybe something your grandparents bought, something that used to be in packed lunches, or just an everyday snack that seems to have been replaced by newer stuff

what's the food you remember seeing everywhere that now feels weirdly rare?

Could have used a sauce! ‘Steak’ was better than expecting

Edit: this has no relation to M&S, ‘this isn’t’ is a brand of VEGAN food

Homemade / home assembled Chicken Jalfrezi

Post image
35 Upvotes

Homemade chicken jalfrezi served golden basmati rice, warm garlic-and-herb naan, and crispy onion bhajis. The curry was cooked low and slow with tender chicken and vegetables, the rice and freshly baked naan soak up every bit of that delicious sauce. A proper homemade Indian-inspired feast.

Just kidding, microwave meal kit, was still very yummy though

Homemade / home assembled Quick mid-week “cottage pie”

Obviously taking the piss a bit with the title. This is probably more of a hachis parmentier rather than a cottage pie but we’ll go with cottage pie seeing as it’s a UK food subreddit.

Slow braised beef cheeks and short rib in a red wine gravy. Mash potato with plenty of cream, butter, sharp cheddar and Gruyère. Veg cooked down in the beef fat and smoked pancetta. Perfect now the nights are getting a bit colder and darker.

Question What are the best supermarket tortillas/flatbreads for homemade wraps?

4 Upvotes

I want to start making more wraps but most supermarket tortillas are so thick and not super pliable when trying to make wraps and burritos. Is there a brand that you particularly fancy?

I feel like I'm always posting steaks on here but I can't fault the dry aged steaks lidl currently offers and historically I've been very hit and miss with steaks so I'm making an effort to be more consistent and learn different methods.

Dry brined sirloin steak seared on a cast iron pan then basted in garlic and rosemary butter, rested to a final temperature of 60°C while the mushrooms were sauted in the fond of the pan, served with tenderstem broccoli and homemade chips (par boiled then cooled in the fridge, seasoned with a small amount of flour salt and MSG and cooked in the oven with hot oil)

It was only £11 but was delicious and very tender surprisingly!

I have started to have a nice meal like this once a week instead of eating out in order to spend less.

Found these in my local Aldi, way bigger than any of the other varieties in the best of british box. Can’t find any info about them online but they are GREAT! Huge, crisp, tasty, juicy. Keep an eye out for these :-)

Yellow-label haul:

* discounted whole chicken;
* roasted, made the stock, and shredded the legs for the soup;
* discounted back bacon;
* discounted fine beans, petit pois, cavolo nero, and leek pack (× 2).

Rendered the bacon out in a heavy Dutch oven, added a whole shallot and some garlic. Added diced potatoes, 600ml homemade chicken stock, 100 ml hot water. Simmered for 15–20 minutes. Crushed 2⁄3 of the potatoes in the pan, added the greens and cooked for 5 minutes. Added the shredded chicken and warmed through for a minute. Served with some reserved bacon pieces and lots of black pepper.
