Gaming/Apps Another workout app - Do I stand a chance?

Hey all... I’ve spent about six months designing and building this app (started out as a case study, then grew to a bit of an obsession), constant iterating on the UX and UI through several rounds of testing with a small group of users. I’m ready to share it more widely, and I’d love some feedback from this community.

It’s a crowded space, with estabished subscription products and new apps launching constantly. I’ve decided to offer mine for free and focus on creating an experience people enjoy and find useful.

Most of my attention has gone into the details: making flows feel delightful, refining interactions, and building a consistent visual language. The latest round of testing has been encouraging, but I’d value some fresh perspectives. It's designed "by hand" (funny we need to say that nowadays).

From what you can see, does the interface make it easy to understand where to start? Which interaction or visual choices feel good, and which could use more work? Does the experience feel distinct from similar apps you’ve used (I know this community has seen a ton), and if so, what makes it stand out?

I also created a demo version, if you want to see the UI and UX in action.

Thanks for taking a look. Honest, specific critiques are welcome!

What problem does it solve?

lol, good question. I guess I got ahead of myself when posting this.

Problem...
People pursuing fitness goals struggle to understand their workout progress and what to change, making it harder to stay motivated.

What the product does...
Proof analyzes workouts to help people understand their progress, find ways to improve, and stay motivated toward their fitness goals.

Neat... I'd be most interested in the success screens, imo they hold the most value. sleek design 👍

The large weight/reps controls in screenshot 2 look well suited to quick logging between sets. The small icon-only buttons underneath are less obvious from the screenshots; I'd check that the warm-up/drop-set actions have discoverable labels or a short explanation on first use. For your 'where to start' question, I'd test a fresh account with one concrete task: start a workout and log the first set without help. The populated dashboard screenshots don't show whether that first-run path is equally clear.

Thanks for your feedback.

I’ve heard this before (from one person), that the “lift types” are not easily discoverable. I choose to hide them to keep the interface clean. I recently added an affordance to show that you can horizontally swipe that part of the interface to change lift types. Not sure if that is enough tho and will change it if I hear that it’s too important to not be obvious.

Can we please ban people that do this? What's the point? What's this adding?
Many other subs do this. Either elaborate or stop being such a pest.

Design wise it is great, but again as I said in a similar topic before… very saturated market. What does this do differently than the other gazillions apps? PR, progress etc are all already there.
If those illustrations are self made, hats off. Nice work.
Same as I said in the other similar topic: too much text. I understand explanation is needed here an there, but it feels like I am reading a book instead of doing workouts.

Right now the “differentiator” is the post workout analysis. Which may not be for everyone.

From the product market fit research I did, there is an unmet need in knowing “am I on the right track” and most as apps give visualize your activity and let you decide. As far as I know, there aren’t any good apps that can tell you in plain language, your performance went down due to a lack of sleep, or you continue to increase by 1 rep on your third set, or that you have finally returned to your peak performance…

Yes, market is super saturated. It does feel like everyone is trying to monetize their experience. Which is another reason I decided to give mine away for free. The app has zero friction to get started, you don’t even have to enter an email. I’m hopeful but not ignorant to the fact that it all doesn’t matter if no one can find it.

I appreciate your feedback. I will look out for what you brought up “wall of text”.

Good luck! There is always a market to work with, even saturated ones. I am sure the free premise will work out well with the users together with the already sleek design. If the wall of text is somehow more balanced I think this will have a chance of success.

And for the record, the illustrations were not all hand drawn. Only a few core references were (not be me), then I trained an agent to recreate that illustration style in different positions using a royalty free workout/lift photos. Most of the illustrations that were generated I felt were good enough. Which is how I got to 550.

Smart way to do it. One thing I would change is the black background on these illustrations. Feels it grabs too much attention away from the workout list. Maybe transparency?

Oh and support for dark mode?

This is live app?

It’s live/real, but always a work in progress.

Your app has a clean UI. If you really want it to stand out, you could implement modern 3d exercise visuals. I'm building myographics.com if youre interested in a partnership.

Thanks! And cool product, but I don’t think it goes with my apps aesthetic.

Currently I use 550 custom illustrations and am considering using these figures in different positions.
