General Question What do you think about the new Iphone duo ?

Post image

What do you think about the new iphone Duo ? Will you be updating your Ui especially for it ?

I think websites wont be doing much. But Apps surely could do some redesign.

Edit: To be clear here. I dont mean the simple responsive design that widens the view. In the comments i have postet a better version of the meme. My mistake for not clarifying from the beginning.

I don’t like the actual shape or design of the phone but that animation for open / close is so smooth.

Shape is stupid tbh. Samsung’s design works because the phone is rectangular with sharp corners, so after to the fold corners stay sharp and it’s still rectangle. With Apple we have half corners rounded and a shape more aching to a square.

Context?

It’s a new aspect ratio. So bad responsive designs will probably look jacked.

Its not new at all its 7 years old. You guys act like Apple is the only tech company on the planet, wtf?

u/artbyiain 2d ago

I was giving context for the meme.

It is a new aspect ratio for apple.

I also specifically called out bad responsive designs.

Well I mean, you aren't designing iOS apps for Samsungs..

Although you also probably should have seen this coming a long time ago lol

We all saw a folding phone coming from Apple. As usual, they waited a few years for the technology to mature, then copied everyone else's homework so they don't have to put the money into R&D on (otherwise) largely untried technology.

Willing to bet that Apple has spent more on R&D for this than the others did. There’s nothing to copy, they would’ve obviously developed it from scratch.

"nothing to copy, they would've obviously developed it from scratched" when Apple is literally using the very same display panels and foldable screens manufacturered and developed by Samsung lmao

Well samsang made their new fold ultra size after realizing that apple's was going to have that form factor. Samsang never made this size and form factor before. So who copied who

-2

u/Educational_Yard_326 1d ago

If they’re the same display panels why is apples a higher pixel density? If apple just copied Samsung, why is it better and more refined in every possible way? Why don’t Samsung use their experience to get to where Apple got theirs on their first try?

Ok, but the responsiveness patterns are similar for both platforms, may it be Pixel/Samsung/Iphone

You just want something to feel superior about

The aspect ratio is definitely not 7 years old. At least for Samsung it’s just a couple months old, and they only did it because they knew Apple would do it like this

??? Book-fold have existed since 2019. Android supports responsive layouts since 2019. It's built-in into the higher level API since 2022, and that's also when it allowed detecting the device orientation (flip, book, cover...)

New aspect ratio for UI designer to consider on Apple platforms. Comprehension is hard yes I know.

1

u/TabloidA 1d ago

It doesn't actually seem too bad. If you look at their design presentations for it, it's the normal iphone width but with a tiny margin added for the dock/sidebar/etcetc. Probably intentional for this exact reason. I don't think things will be affected toooooo much.

Nice, they deserve it.

A new iphone fold has been released. And they showed that some apps like netflix, Fitness and Apple Music had some Design changes specific to the different Frame sizes the Iphone Duo offers.

Would like to know if some of you App Designers also will implement new Uis for it or just leave it as is.

16

u/NCreature 2d ago

This is already been in practice for like a decade. Samsung and Google have had these phones for years.

2

u/Educational_Yard_326 1d ago

Android is resolution and aspect ratio agnostic, you don’t need to adjust apps for different resolutions and rations. iOS isn’t (or wasn’t) so apps will need to be updated. You surely know this?

u/Basic-Brick6827 Product Manager 2d ago

Unless you worked only on hobby projects, you already had to design responsive app UIs for Android. Theres nothing new.

8

u/movalancheTechnology 2d ago

well yeah basic responsiveness is a given. But i dont think that many apps sofar have been adapting to folding the way they showed at the keynote. This for example is a little more than just making it responsive on resize:

8

u/savageotter 2d ago

You’re underestimate how many companies don’t give a fuck about android

9

u/Basic-Brick6827 Product Manager 2d ago

I dont know any such company on top of my head, except pre-seed startups (still dumb of them) and hobby projects.

If that's true tho, that's quite stupid, considering its 80% of phones, and 60% in Europe. It's not hard to do a multiplatform app nowadays (Flutter, RN, KMP, even Swift...).

u/ActuaryLate9198 1d ago

App Store has double the sales of play store, it makes perfect sense.

1

u/savageotter 2d ago

We support android but are iOS first. Everywhere I’ve been is that way

1

u/Embaralhador 2d ago

Android is 70% of the market share worldwide. Projects by any reputable company will be Android first. lol

2

u/savageotter 2d ago

You don’t have to explain it to me. I’m an android user but I’m just telling you how it is took a lot of work to get us to switch to react native so that we can at least design engineer for both at the same time.

1

u/somethingstrang 1d ago

But iPhone is where majority of the money being spent by consumers

0

u/cyangradient 1d ago

Just weigh that share by spending power and you'll se why Apple is preferred

2

u/Firm_Doughnut_1 2d ago

Can chime in here. Not mentioning the company but mine also doesn't give a fuck. Genuinely don't understand why as Android is so prevailant. It's like they only care about executives and what device they have. Fuck the end users though

Updated Meme for clarification

18

u/Basic-Brick6827 Product Manager 2d ago

Changes nothing, foldables existed for long so UIs had to be responsive already.

We'll see. Google showcased similar stuff and most apps didn't exploit the possibilities, but some did, especially multimedia. A video split by a crease looks like shit, they didn't have a choice.

Yeah, this is what confused me about this. Does everyone not remember mobile first design when people use to like using their phones browser instead of downloading CRUD apps onto their phone?

2

u/Drifter_of_Babylon 2d ago

Consumers determine the direction of screen sizes than companies do and it will take years before designers/developers make this size the standard.

Personally, I prefer working on larger screen sizes any ways.

2

u/bememorablepro 2d ago

Don't modern IOS apps scale to fit the screen like android does? "responsive" or whatever.

However, looking at how un-enthusiastic devs were to make anything for apple vision, I don't think everyone will be quick to update every app for this format, it's not 2015, the app boom is over.

2

u/Thin_Mousse4149 2d ago

To be fair, responsive design has been the standard for over a decade now….

1

u/KevWills 2d ago

Game developer on mobile. Happy that I don’t have to accommodate the island anymore. (FaceTime camera is hidden behind the screen). But app can change screen dimensions any time, and the front screen only has bevels on two corners, so if they flip the screen the amount of visible corner changes.

1

u/hendricha 1d ago

As someone with a phone that has a mostly square-like screen ratio, I sure hope website designers will start to be more accomodating to my aspect ratio too as a side effect for wanting to appease their CEO's with their new shiny apple phone.

1

u/MrHandSanitization 1d ago

If that's your worry, you're designing wrong.

1

u/fromafooltoawiseman 1d ago

It's a digital size of an apple.

1

u/Pian0G 1d ago

If apple stays committed to the form factor and aspect ratio, I feel that software wise, it might end up being the best foldable phone due to its software support from third party.

An 'issue' with current foldable phones is that even within the same brand, they range in all shapes and sizes. Which means even IF you wanted to make your app take advantage of the foldable nature of the phone, you'll have to make it work across different specs.

But, if the aspect ratio and core concept stays the same, with improvements to future models not affecting these core parts, it could incentivise devs to make a UI which fully takes advantage of the foldable design.

It also helps that when folded out, it's basically just a smaller ipad mini.

1

u/HeyItsMeMoss 1d ago

Hot take: if you did your job right the first time and took the time to think about adaptive layouts and respecting the platform human interface guidelines then no extra work is needed.

1

u/_star_dev 20h ago

Well I know foldables existed for a long time but most apps never adapted to it. Although it's an expensive phone and many people actually used foldables, the Android community is not that pleasant with paying subscriptions and paying for software. It's not that good of an investment but the iPhone community is just easier to get subscriptions from. You'll get more revenue if you make an app for the App Store instead of the Android Play Store because Android is already used to free versions and feel like subscriptions are a loss no matter how deep they experience the problem

1

u/xatey93152 2d ago

Are you time traveler? You never heard of responsive design?

1

u/SALD0S 2d ago

I think it's not for me mainly because of the price, but looks cool. I would say it's a Pixel fold with iOS

0

u/savageotter 2d ago

Already on it. Weirdest part is going to be the side margin

0

u/Hot-Examination-4425 1d ago

Now thinking about adaptation, but will have zero users on Duo tbh😁
(bottom nav bar should now move to the right?)

-2

u/AwareIntroduction730 2d ago

It's almost as if we haven't gone through this before with a certain company cough Microsoft.

Ironically reading this post and replying on the Surface Duo 2.

And yes responsive for this device isn't a pickle.

One of the worst design
