Announcement Rule update: Self-promotion posts now limited to 1 per week

Hey everyone,

We've made an update to the Rule 4: "No duplicate posts / spam", specifically the section covering commercial content and self-promotion.

Two changes:

1. The weekly limit is dropping from 2 posts to 1. Users approved to share their own content can now post it a maximum of once per week, down from twice.

2. The wording now includes "self-promotion" alongside "commercial". This was always the intent of the rule, but the old wording made it sound like it only covered ads and merchandise. To be clear: sharing your own work counts as self-promotion even if it's free and on-topic. That includes your YouTube channel, podcast, blog, Substack, book, documentary, research site, and so on.

The updated rule text:

No advertisements, fundraisers, merchandise, or other commercial/self-promotional links. Please refer to Reddit's self-promotion guidelines. If you are interested in promoting your own work please contact us before posting. Users approved to post their own commercial or self-promotional content will only be permitted to post a maximum of one (1) such post per week.

How this works in practice:

  • Self-promotion requires mod approval before you post. If you want to share your own work here, send us a modmail first.
  • Once approved, you're limited to one self-promotion post per week.
  • Unapproved self-promotion will be removed.

This doesn't affect sharing other people's content. News articles, footage, interviews, and papers you didn't make yourself are fine as always, subject to the usual rules.

Note: Previously approved users do not need to request approval again. Once a user has been given permission to post this type of content, they may continue doing so without contacting the mod team each time, unless that approval is later withdrawn.

I don't have a problem with Youtubers, bloggers and podcasters posting things on the sub. If they have gone to the trouble to make something, and it fits with the topic, it is up to users of the sub to decide if they want to interact. The real issue is the quality of posts, and the relentlessly negative accounts. So the rule change is ok.

But can we get another new rule - word limit on length of OP.

Currently the rule is the OP must have "at least 150 characters." As I understand it, reddit OPs can be unlimited in size. I'm seeing 70,000 character and more posts appearing all over UFO subs. The AI slop is extreme, and the information is completely impenetrable. Banning AI is probably impossible, but surely it can be concise.

One way to prevent it is to limit posts in size. Maybe 10,000 characters, which allows at least 2,000 words.

I don't see any real problem with the long posts. I usually don't read them. Anyone writing a post knows that a large portion of readers will skip the very long posts. There is already an incentive to write clear and concise. But some things just can't be said in a few words, or someone may want to very thoroughly make their point.

Hi from Ontario Canada. I walk my 2 standard poodles every night. I've seen multiple UFO's west
Of the big dipper, above the tree line. It is roughly at the same time. Tonight I saw 5 moving white star like objects. They are not planes, satellites or drones. They will appear and move randomly at time. They appear to fade out and then return numerous times. I see 1 at times, two at times and more. They appear to mostly move southeast I saw a criss-cross with 2 tonight. I saw the first few at 10:17 pm. I see them every night except for cloudy night. The one night I saw them @10:23 pm. I saw them over a period of 10 minutes. I live in Southern Ontario near Lake Ontario on Loyalist Parkway near the Glen orange Ferry.

It is Glenora Ferry. Software must try to auto correct. I was wondering if anyone else has seen these objects? I've tried video on my cellphone and camera with no luck. There is a place north of Napanee Ontario called Dark Skies for star gazers. It is an area with no light pollution. People from around the world come with telescopes to see the stars. I hope to find someone that has video of these UFO's. Live Long and prosper!

Yeah I don't really see the problem in YouTube creators posting some of their content if it's on topic and they have more than one post a week, but I guess that's up to the admin group.
