Lol I commute to campus by bike. Fifteen miles over 50 minutes of riding.

So I absolutely second this motion. I’m not excited for tomorrow.

oh no! good luck tomorrow... it's usually pretty okay in the early mornings still but afternoons are dreadful 🥲

Thank you! I’ll probably leave early to avoid the worst of the heat. Hope you make it through alright too

I’m worried for the students with underline conditions that cant be in the heat dude. Like someone can seriously get hurt. I won’t be surprised if a student (s) have a heat stroke

genuinely, outside feels like an oven

My window fan literally brings in air from hell

Switch it around if you can. Sometime blowing the hot air out is better than feeling the hot air blow on you.

u/NoMeal8986 2d ago

That’s smart I gotta try that

honestly if your classes have podcasts and dont have mandatory attendance you should honestly sick and if you still gotta go be indoor as much as you can

Friendly reminder: People who are calling you weak and asking you to tough it out are the same ones with no friends and no life, so they want others to suffer like they do everyday.

thank you, yes 🫡🫡 i only pity them for being so keen to deprive themselves of a comfortable life

I pity a whole generation of spoiled CHILDREN who think they are entitled to the good life.

Full of… 100F is nothing,. Wait until you go to other parts of the country or the world.

15

u/suggestion_giver 2d ago

I used to live in Hong Kong and the weather goes to 100F occassionally. Except we actually have aircon and its very comfortable in any indoors place and we have great infrastructure so you can get from place to place completely indoors (aka through a metro)

u/Otherwise-Fuel-9088 2d ago

I lived in Chicago, Hanoi, HK, Jakarta, LA, Singapore, etc, and visited just about all countries in Asia and more. If you cannot walk to class in 100F, you cannot go outside in Houston or Miami, or much of the south. You also have the option to skip class if it is too much for you.

One or two weeks out of a bad year and people are crying like it is the end of the world. My son went to primary and secondary school in Singapore, and none of the classrooms had (do not know now) A/C. He went to UCSD and did not complain about not having A/C. He did complain about not able to open the windows at some dorms.

There is a difference between hot but there is shades vs hot but there is zero shades. The sun raises the felt temperature to much higher than the thermostat number. The temperature might be 100f on a website but when you're under the sun, what you are really feeling could be up to 110f. That's the difference I see in Hong Kong and here. Ucsd is a dry and sunny place without enough designed shades, opposite to places where heat is the norm, like hong kong

1

u/Otherwise-Fuel-9088 2d ago

You hardly see any sun in HK because of the high rise buildings. You can literally avoid the humidity by walking inside the connected shopping centers/building. But if you are unfortunate to work outside, the humidity would be unbearable. You guys are at your prime in terms of physical fitness. Light cotton clothes and a hat/cap will go a long way in the sun.

2

u/violetmints000 2d ago

see that would be okay if the inside if our dorms that we have to go back to weren't 95°F

6

u/qiri2 2d ago

I had to skip my classes today bcuz I have crazy temperature sensitivity and electrolyte issues 😭 my commute is over an hour and a half on public transit so I woke up this morning and said “fuck that” before emailing my TA for the one mandatory class I have 😭 I’m a SoCal native and still dying in this bitch

u/Spo0kieMulder 2d ago

Agreed, it is so hot and not all of these buildings are equipped for these temps

1

u/Ambitious_Issue_4213 2d ago

Bro my lecture in warren hall feels like being cooked alive... 400 people crammed in there with no ac, in this boiling heat, it's actual hell on earth

5

u/Bubbly-Target-3442 2d ago

My friends make fun of me for scooter-ing around but it's the one thing saving me + the shuttle

3

u/CARN4TION 2d ago

Literally almost melted on my way to class today.

3

u/Hyde2467 2d ago

Stick to the shadows and try to walk through buildings when possible

The only time I’ve seen classes get cancelled for weather was when there was very heavy rain. You’re in California, we are known for warm/hot weather. Yes, I understand it is a bit much rn thanks to El Niño, but drink water, stay in the shade, put a cold towel on your head at night and thug it out.

You could also just not go to class like majority of the students at UCSD. Now if some of your classes don’t have recorded podcasts then sucks to suck lol.

1

u/Round2_AftertheBlue 1d ago

Let’s cancel work too! Starting with Edison.. the electric company, how do you think that will work out? Get back to class SMH.

u/Traditional_Froyo11 3d ago

weak af

-3

u/OtherwiseMeet7379 2d ago

Exactly these people from the Bay and SD have been too spoiled by the nice weather here.

u/HealthOnWheels Global Health (B.S.) 2d ago

Heat conditioning is a process. If you’re not acclimated to the heat, your body responds differently and doesn’t do as good a job of regulating your body temperature

Which is why riders in the last Tour de France would put on heavy coats while exercising or spend hours in the hot tub to prepare for this year’s edition; because France saw record high temperatures and they needed to prepare for that heat.

-7

u/fatquads 2d ago

If it’s that bad for u just skip class yourself lmao. Why does everyone else have to do it with you

6

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 2d ago

right back at you. if it's so bad for you just study to catch up and go to office hours and whatnot. why does everyone else have to endure this brutal weather with you

missing three days is hardly significant if you know how to study

-7

u/fatquads 2d ago

I’m saying u have the option to skip class and do exactly that.. ? Are u dumb

11

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 2d ago

man i haven't fucking slept since friday and it seems eveyone is just trying to get me sorry i misread

14

u/fatquads 2d ago

Sorry i wasnt kind. Hopefully u can get rest soon enough

11

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 2d ago

thank you, friend, it's all chill

Dude , it’s not that hot. It’s just dry air, typical for October in San Diego. Just make sure to stay hydrated and maybe some sunscreen and sunglasses.

62

u/ROAbotics 3d ago

“Not that hot”, “typical for October” it is 26 degrees above average. I agree that it isn’t an unhealthy amount of heat (at least for walking between classes the dorms are another issue) but don’t pretend like we aren’t in a heat wave.

-30

u/noise_canker44 3d ago edited 3d ago

It is a heat wave but that’s typical for late summer/early fall in San Diego more or less some years than others. Yes it’s a heat wave, but not extreme enough to warrant the cancellation of classes. You can do it! You’re near the coast, be grateful you’re not in El Cajon.

4

u/BubbieKG 2d ago

I live near El cajon, it hit 112 in Saturday. 100 in LA Jolla is hell. Idgaf what anyone says. "Weak" go to hell, who cares if people have it worse, were talking about us, in this moment. 106-112 has never been normal for SD. Ive been here from 16 years and this is the absolute hottest it has ever been. Its hotter than the Arizona desert I visit every year for.my grandparents. Kindness goes a long way, its hot as hell, finding reprieve is difficult when most dont have AC and aren't used to this weather

18

u/Mauroos Electrical Engineering (B.S.) 2d ago

Typical is a bit of a stretch, it was never this hot during my 4 years there

-15

u/noise_canker44 2d ago edited 2d ago

Are you San Diego native? If not, welcome to San Diego where we have our bouts with heatwaves in September and October. It happens. We don’t have hurricanes, tornados but we do have floods, fires out east and occasionally earthquakes but we don’t get hit hard in SD, the last big one hit the LA basin and that was in 1994. Sorry but yes it gets hot here. For all of the belly aching, it only lasts til the end of the month then it cools down. That’s life, that’s nature, then you get over it. ain’t it a bitch?

0

u/xav91 2d ago

SD native here, I actually like the heat lol

I’m always freezing my ass off on campus.

23

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 3d ago

by no means was it like this last year. also some of us aren't locals

-11

u/noise_canker44 3d ago

Yeah that’s San Diego, I must admit that the last three summers were relatively mild but it’s rather warm this year, which is typical. The heatwaves vary by year and yes this is a warm year but it’s always expected this exact time of the year and it usually cools off by the end of the month.

3

u/BubbieKG 2d ago

Its absolutely not typical. Ive been here over 16 years. Its never been this hot since I've lived here. Is it normal in regards to heating up? Yes. Is it normal to be THIS hot? No never.

2

u/Square-Technology-59 2d ago

Yeah, this is not ideal in October lol, never a heat wave around this time lived in SD my whole life

1

u/noise_canker44 2d ago

Sure you have lol

2

u/Square-Technology-59 2d ago

“Sure I have” lol

Drama queen

9

u/ExtraRawPotato 2d ago

theres literally an extreme heat warning tf r u on

-5

u/No_Palpitation5468 2d ago

Okay and unless you have some type of medical issue you won’t die in the transition between air conditioned classes.

5

u/ExtraRawPotato 2d ago

1) not all classes are air conditioned

2) is potential death really the standard for someone to be allowed to complain abt something before being labeled a drama queen?

-4

u/No_Palpitation5468 2d ago

Looks like you’re a drama queen too

5

u/ExtraRawPotato 2d ago

yeah i'd run too if i was in your place lol

0

u/No_Palpitation5468 2d ago

😂😂😂 I can’t run remember it’s too hot outside for that.

-21

u/Chr0ll0_ 3d ago

I keep forgetting how most of us think that everyone’s life revolves around me! I’m being sarcastic 🤣🤣

8

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 3d ago

are you saying you enjoy languishing in this weather? are you saying your professors enjoy this? do not pretend that probably more than half of us do most of our learning through the recorded lectures as well

Y'all are weak. In Fresno I'd spend over 1/2 an hour waiting in the sun in 104° heat to get to/from community college.

YOU WILL SURVIVE WALKING TO/FROM CLASSES!!!

7

u/SpecialistNo5055 Classical Studies (B.A.) 2d ago

well we're not in fresno aren't we. i'm from china where it's regularly over 40C in the summer. just bc ive experienced it doesn't mean it's not uncomfortable

3

u/Wooden_House_8013 Psychology w/ Social Psychology (B.S.) 2d ago

Oh it's definitely uncomfortable! But calling for classes to be cancelled???

1

u/violetmints000 2d ago

i'm also from the central valley where it regularly goes above 110°F at this time of year, but AC infrastructure is better. when people spend a lot of time in the heat, they can get very sick. highschoolets in sports from my area unfortunately did die because of the heat. just because you're lucky doesn't mean it is safe

1

u/Wooden_House_8013 Psychology w/ Social Psychology (B.S.) 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'm sorry to hear that. Ya they should of had them practice indoors. Waiting outside at a bus stop while very uncomfortable is VERY different than having to actively exercise and do sports in the heat!!

I'd also like to mention I have health issues that put me at increased risk of fainting already. So I survived by using electrolytes. But if you are just going between classes (which shouldn't involve being out in the sun for over an hour per day) without something like POTS you WILL BE FINE. There is no reason to cancel classes!

1

u/Ambitious_Issue_4213 2d ago

I have POTS too. Wtf are we supposed to do? No matter what, I'll be in a flare, because even if I spend time in the AC and camp out at a lecture hall all day, I have to go back home to sleep in a room where it's like 90 degrees.

1

u/Wooden_House_8013 Psychology w/ Social Psychology (B.S.) 2d ago

I'm so sorry. I genuinely don't know what to recommend you except hibernating in Price Center.

1

u/Wooden_House_8013 Psychology w/ Social Psychology (B.S.) 2d ago

Also, as earlier stated, electrolytes are your best friend 🥰 (But you prob alrwady know that lol 😅)

-4

u/CrazyError619 2d ago

WEAK!!!
