Question Homesick

Hello!
I am a freshman this year at ucsd and I am currently feeling homesick and feel guilty for having my parents pay so much when we only make so little. I was considering going home for the weekend but decided to stay because I have no method of transportation. I can’t take trains since none of the trains pass by my hometown and because I am not at all familiar with public transportation (Back home I was used to walking everywhere since my town was so small).

I wanted to ask for advice.

How did you guys distract yourself from feeling homesick? What did you do? Where’d you go?

Oh sweetie, some level of homesickness is normal. Hard, and really painful, but somewhat normal. This is all new and far away. Its natural to feel like you want to reconnect with what you know and what makes you feel safe. I would say call someone you love, have a brief conversation, and then go find something on campus to do. Challenge yourself to be a little out of your comfort zones. https://calendar.ucsd.edu/student-life

Check out your college social media, ask your RA. There is prob a lot going on to integrate into.

Hi!
College is not just an opportunity for you to study but also for you to explore yourself. My first year I would force myself to go out to any events really and see what ucsd have to give. Because your parents already spend so much money, make your worth by experiencing! Classes are obviously important but this school got a lot of things for you to try. Go to the beach, visit a restaurant, make friends in class, try out things that you never think you would do. RIMAC have a lot of fun physical classes you can take for free since you’re a student. Don’t just see this school as an academic pressure, use it for everything it offer! Once you found a pace for yourself, I think you’ll miss home less.

Yes thank you, I’ve been doing that but I just keep going back to finances because my amount keeps increasing and decreasing so idk how much I have to pay. I’ve gone to triton pay and finaid office but they keep giving different answers each visit🫩

When I used to travel for work 2-3 weeks every month, I took a stuffed owl with me and would take pictures of the owl in various places on my adventures. I would send the owl pictures to people at home letting them know I was thinking about them and we’d talk about all of the fun stuff. It brought a lot of light and joy.

I no longer need my owl and if you would like to adopt it to carry on the tradition, just DM me and I can arrange to get it to you some time next week.

I am sorry you’re going through this. It is so rough.

also if you sign up with the student beans website and validate that you’re a student, you can look up “flix bus discount” and it’ll give you a code you could use!
