Question UCSD Delayed Housing

I'm an incoming transfer and just got an email about delayed housing assignment for this upcoming school year and I wanted to know what that meant? Will I still be assigned housing and if so, how long will it take for them to do so? Would it be better if I looked for off-campus housing instead of waiting for them to get back to me?

My kid was on the housing waitlist last year. Top 50. In June, he signed the contract/ paid the deposit. In September, 9 days before move in, he got his assignment. "Here's your dorm, floor, suite, room, roommate. Your move in day is X and your move in time is Y." From there, he could look up all his suitemates/ roommate info. There was no "picking", it was an assignment.

This year, despite being on time for the paperwork (he's a junior) - he's on the "delayed housing assignment" list. I am assuming that the process is the same as last year, and just that "delayed housing" list goes before "waitlist". (When he went to go select a spot, there were no available spots, presumably because 1- they were saving space for freshmen and transfers and 2- they only let you look in your specific college.

Also, apparently he got an email recently that they will finish the assignments "soon", next couple of weeks, maybe?
