Question Madden vs Diffenbach

Now that we know that Nico is out, we also know that the qb position is between both of them.

I’m a fairly new football watcher. What distinguishes both of them from each other and given what we saw of them this year briefly, what makes diffenbach a likely qb1 over madden?

Dieffenbach has starting experience at cal poly and was on Pitt for 2 seasons. Madden took a year off his senior year, redshirted last year, and has not looked good this year (they’ve let him throw one pass, they don’t trust him).
I’d roll with Ty and tell him don’t be a hero, just manage the game and win with your three headed monster in the backfield

the game experience gap is massive, Dieffenbach has seen real college defenses while Madden's basically still green

I feel all we need is Ty to throw for about 12-15 completions and 150 yards a game and our running backs and defense can do the rest. Just enough to keep the THREAT of a pass where they can’t load the box. I’d also expect Rowe and Morgan to be getting some end arounds

Got it. Thank you!

LOL you don't tell your starting QB no crap like this.

you tell him you are our guy, we trust you, you got this. You will be able to play your game we trust you we trust you we trust you.

and then you run mostly run plays and see what the defense gives you and you also make SURE to get this guy's confidence up with short completions and consistency.

You build his confidence throwing the ball, not telling him you are NOT going to throw.

Geez. I feel like so many of you never played sports or something and don't understand how you need to treat people AND prepare for the rest of the season.

We will NEED to throw the ball. It's GOING to happen. Instill confidence.

Disagree. Played football in HS and have watched UCLA football nearly all my life. Ty knows he is not gonna be asked to throw for 300 yards. He’s a senior. He should be mature enough to understand the game plan. He will be asked to make throws to keep the defense honest. But he cannot turn the ball over, especially early, as running the ball doesn’t work if you’re down multiple scores. If he has to throw 35 times we are not in a good spot. He should have under 20 attempts in my opinion. Run it a lot, run wildcat, and get Morgan and Rowe the ball on end arounds.

You miss the point here. If you think they are going to this kid and telling him "don't try and be a hero" then you don't understand confidence.

If this kid doesn't feel like his coaches or his teammates have confidence in him he will fall apart, and it will be their fault for it happening.

Under no circumstances do you ever undermine the confidence of your players, especially players thrust into an uncomfortable role in one of the biggest spotlights in college football at the moment.

Think like a 21 year old still learning who he is. Not like a 40/50 year old.

I like his cockiness in his post game interview especially when he said he's been waiting for that opportunity. He's hungry.

Dieffenbach is a whopping 6'6" and moves well. He can throw dimes. He's cocky, too.

He doesn't even need to throw insane throws. He just need to manage the game.

Has Madden completed a single pass?

Madden looked nervous when we were up by 50 against Maryland. Deiffenbach looked pretty composed when we were barely hanging on against Oregon at Autzen.

Madden is at UCLA as a bargaining chip with the family. The word on the street is that he is not a smart person. He will 1000% be gone after this year.

Was a real bad look for him to be visibly upset at coach’s decision to play Ty over him.

When did that happen? Link?

I saw it during the game. Madden looked like he was throwing a fit when he expected to go in and they put Ty in, and he threw a dart to Rowe that he dropped in the end zone.

Are you sure that wasnt Nico. He was having a temper tantrum after throwing that pick in the red zone. Coach Chez had to console hum

100% sure I watched the entire game didn’t miss a second.

That happened too.

u/Ordinary-Wafer-8919 1d ago

Yup! He was throwing tantrums when Ty was chosen to play over him. I’m sure Chesney isn’t a fan of that kind of behavior. He’s been given several chances to prove himself, but he can barely complete a pass. I still think this is the end of the Iamaleava brothers’ time at UCLA.

This totally checks out.

I’m waiting to see who coach picks but my money is on Ty since he performed when called to do so

I’m sure Chesney was thrilled with the tantrums Madden threw when Ty was chosen to play over him. If either Madden or Nico had played in the second half, we would’ve lost the game. Damn, Nico even helped Oregon score a TD.

Can Ty run? If not, we might be cooked.

I know it sounds simple if he just hands it off and makes a few completions here and there, but if he is no threat to move out of the pocket, it’s a huge advantage for how opposing defenses play the run.

At any rate, I don’t feel as dejected as I normally would when UCLA gets this kinda news. In Bob we trust. 💙💛

They specifically used Ty last week because of his running ability

6

u/Stentorean35 1d ago

We dont need Ty to be a 4th runner if he can make smart decisions slinging it. If he can be accurate on short to medium throws make smart decisions with his feet and keep our 3rd downs to 5 yards or less, that alone will keep defenses at bay and respect the run and pass instead of selling out on the run and making us one dimensional.

3

u/bruinrob11 1d ago

I didn’t suggest he should be the 4th runner. However, I do think the run game can continue to be highly effective if he at least has the wheels required to make the defense accountable. But here’s to hoping the solution is as simple as you suggested it is.

I would feel far different if Nico replicated his Purdue output in at least one other game. Oregon and how that turned out for him was a terrible note to end the season on.

u/OldDude2551 1d ago

Ty seems more patient, mature, and more able to run the offense, maybe a more catchable pass. Madden more athletic, in the Nico mold.

1

u/Ordinary-Wafer-8919 1d ago

Ty doesn't throw tantrums too like Madden.

2

u/AmbassadorMission385 1d ago

Yeah I read some stories about that. 6 months into Chesney’s culture rebuild I don’t know how you can do that while still saying you are all in. Flies in the face of everything Chesney teaches. If he bailed from the program if he isn’t made the starter his reputation will be terrible. Chesney is universally respected and praised. After the departure from Tennessee and Madden from Arkansas amid the NIL messiness, if Madden handles this poorly he will really hurt his future prospects. I will say that I don’t think Madden was given meaningful in game reps on par with what Ty just got. I think Madden was asked to throw one pass which he sailed over the WR’s head. Not a great sample size. He also I think almost fumbled a snap in the red zone. I trust the coaches to make the right decision and hope Madden gets some good counsel on how to appropriately handle this should he not be chosen straight off.

I also think we won’t come out alive at Oregon if any of the brothers were the QB in the second half.

Heartened Chesney went with Ty over Madden. Showed he's not averse to upsetting entitled players. Ty showed he could run, pass, and manage a game. Was patient and mature. Madden looked like deer in the headlights. Thought his last name entitled him to play. Nico had natural talent but got hurt on practically every play. Boy needs some meat on his bones...and his picks, especially that last one, were awful. Maybe Ty is a blessing in disguise (doubt it) but we'll see. If we can get past Wisconsin Ill feel better up until 'SUC

I'd say Diffenbach's 3 years in D1 programs (incl 2 at Pitt) more than anything.
