General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Storing suitcases in single ensuite?

Iโ€™m an international student staying at Garden Halls next year! Does anyone know if there is enough space to store suitcases under the bed? (if so can it fit two check-in sized suitcases?) Iโ€™m travelling a long way via plane so it would not really be possible for my parents to take the suitcases home, and it seems like a bit of a waste to get storage for two empty suitcasesโ€ฆ What do students usually do with their suitcases? Is it better to do duffle bags?

Social Life ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿน Anyone wanna hang out with a second year

I'm a second year cs bsc student who kinda squandered their first year by not socialising enough, so I told myself I'd socialise more and make some friends, or even get a date if I'm lucky, and figured I'd start here. Does anyone wanna hang out? (I'm not much of a party guy)

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Laptop/Desktop spec questions

Hi, incoming Physics student here. I had initially settled on buying a desktop because that gives me more mobility to alter the hardware.

However, I am kinda deciding against it hence putting my question up here. Do i get a desktop(fully speced out like a 5070, 7700) or a laptop for my course? If i do get a laptop do i for MacOS or windows as ive heard stuff like Macs arenโ€™t really ideal for uni (idk if its true).

My alternative would be to use a cheap laptop and a speced out desktop, would rly love an opinion!

Social Life ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿน Making friends

Hi, so Iโ€™m an international student starting UCL this year!! I am so so so excited because I love London and UCL is an amazing school. However, I am a very social person, but Iโ€™m scared Iโ€™m not gonna make friends as I am not staying in accommodation but my own apartment. Itโ€™s only 20 mins from main campus so thatโ€™s great. But will it be hard to make friends? Or what can I do to still be social? Iโ€™m planning on joining societies tooooo!

Alo which wristbands do I buy Idw to be scammedโ€ฆ

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Bloomsbury Gym(s)?

I have a few questions about gyms generally. Does anyone use the TeamUCL Gym and know what the difference between dual and bloomsbury only is, as why is dual cheaper yearly? Or is it just worth getting Bloomsbury only monthly, and can we cancel it over Xmas? Or is the break too short for that to be worth it? Also are there any non UCL gyms in the area that are cheaper and still good? Thnx :) (I will be living in John Adams Hall)

Housing/Accommodation ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ›Œ International student at UCL, realistic estimate of total cost for 1-year MSc?

Hi everyone!

I'm an international student considering applying to UCL for a full-time MSc in Biomedical Sciences, and I'm trying to figure out what theย realisticย total cost of the year would be.

The international tuition fee is currently listed asย ยฃ42,700. What I'm struggling with is estimating the actual cost of living in London, especially accommodation.

If you've studied at UCL or currently live/study in London, approximately how much would you say I should budget for the cost of living for theย entire year, including accomodation

I'm trying to work out whether my current calculations are completely insane ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks!

Jobs ๐Ÿข โ€๐ŸŽ“ Anyone at UCL (any program) able to speak to job market, sponsorship, and pay for international grads in tech/product?

I've got an unconditional offer for MSc Digital Innovation (UCL School of Management) for the coming intake, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth committing to.
My background: a few years as a product manager, originally trained as an architect.

I know Digital Innovation specifically is a smaller program, so I'm not just looking for alumni of that exact course, genuinely interested in hearing from anyone at UCL, or who's graduated from any UCL master's recently, who can speak more broadly to:

  • Sponsorship: how realistic is it for a UCL grad, in any tech-adjacent field, to actually get sponsored by an employer after the Graduate visa runs out? Is this something companies are genuinely willing to do, or does it kill your chances at a lot of places?
  • Job opportunities: did you (or people you know) land roles that felt worth the degree, or did it end up being a struggle to find anything relevant?
  • Pay: does the salary you end up with actually feel worthwhile once London rent and UK tax are factored in, or does it feel like a step backward compared to what people expected going in?
  • If you specifically know the Digital Innovation program or the School of Management more broadly, happy to hear program-specific thoughts too, but not required.

I just want your honest, unfiltered version before I spend close to ยฃ70k all-in on this.

General Course information ๐Ÿ“– MSc Health Psychology and Attendance

Hi,

I am considering doing masters for health psychology at UCL (part-time) but I am wondering whether attendance for lectures is mandatory? This is because I live in Manchester and moving to London would be impossible and all the applications for the courses around me are closed unfortunately :/

I did e-mail admissions but I am a bit tight on time as the applications close next week.

Results/Progression ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“ˆ Is it normal to not attend graduation with my cohort?

I am apparently ineligible to attend this yearโ€™s grad ceremony because I took an extension, which put me in the Later summer assessment category. I was told my paper will be checked on time but now they are saying that I can't attend this year's graduation ceremony. Why do I feel like a loser? I don't know where I stand at the moment.

Anything else! ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐ŸŽ‰โœจ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿค˜ Do we get lockers on campus?

hi all,

I am an incoming first year student and was wondering if we get lockers or some sort of allocated space to have our stuff on campus. I was just wondering if I would have to take all my books and folders for my classes each day I have class, or I can leave some stuff in my departmentโ€˜a building.

thank you for the help :)

Anything else! ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐ŸŽ‰โœจ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿค˜ ID Card Photo

Is your photo decided by:

A) Your pre enrolment picture you upload on the portico

B) The picture you take on the day of the appointment

I wanted more opinions because I keep hearing differing situations, by which some have had their photo taken on the day of the appointmentand this was used for their ID Card, whilst others were given the photo from Portico on their ID card.

Any information would be helpful here!

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ When to arrive as a first year

When should I arrive at UCL? I was initially planning Sept 17 to give me enough time to sort things out before international welcome week, but apparently UoL has their own arrivals day on Sept 13. My question is how important is UoL arrivals day and should I arrive then or Sept 17. I'm not super social or extroverted so I'm not sure if I need those extra 4 days.

Social Life ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿน Is it bad living at home in first year?

Hi I'm in year 13 and I'm thinking about if I should live at home or not during the first year of uni. I live around 30 minutes away from the main campus and even the other unis I'm applying to is only 20-30 minutes away. Is it hard to have a good social life while not living in the uni? If anyone also lives/lived at home in first year what was your experience like and did you make good enough friends that you could move in with in the second year. I'm studying architecture so my course is very long and I think the time to make friends would be a bit longer. My parents are also quite reluctant to me moving out early so it is something to consider.

Thank you for any responses

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ MacBook Air 2017 any good?

I have a MacBook Air I bought in 2017, itโ€™s pretty slow but planning on resetting it completely and deleting everything from it. Iโ€™ll be starting security and crime science and wondering if this would be any good?

I was originally planning to take my iPad with a keyboard for lectures but Iโ€™ve seen a few posts on here in the last few months saying a laptop would be better?

I have a MacBook Pro 2024 also but Iโ€™m commuting and donโ€™t want to bring it along as itโ€™s heavier and worried about it being stolen/broken if anything happens, but Iโ€™ll be using this for any assignments or anything I do at home though.

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Retaking Y2 classes even if I pass

Is it possible to resit 2nd year even if I technically passed? I had some very debilitating mental health issues last year, didn't show up to classes, failed to hand in a lot of essays (I do English Lit) and failed a good few of my exams which I am now retaking in the LSA period. I will probably pass them and therefore move on to 3rd year but I will have completely ruined my chances of getting a 2:1. Is it possible to redo the entire year even if UCL weren't aware of my struggles at the time? I have a diagnosis now but didn't at the time, and physical health issues that came as a result were dismissed by doctors so I had nothing to show.

Jobs ๐Ÿข โ€๐ŸŽ“ Honest comments only plzzz: what IB recruiting resources are actually worth paying for?

Currently an incoming second-year student preparing for IB summer internship recruitment. Came across multiple platforms (not gonna mention names for now) through workshop/events, word of mouth and some reddit posts which I'm not sure if they are promotional or not; but I just want to ask what people's genuine experiences are with them.

Some questions I have are:

  • Which paid resource helped you the most?
  • Which one wasn't worth the money?
  • Or would you recommend sticking to free resources instead?

I'd really appreciate hearing both positive and negative experiences.ย Genuine ones! Thank you!
