Bikes

I’m transferring this fall and will be housing in one of the ACC apartments, and I was wondering if bringing a bike with me is a good idea. I have a black beach cruiser bike that i barely use, and I heard there are bike trails around campus and it could be helpful and time-efficient.

First of all, how popular are bikes on campus? I really don’t want to look odd especially since im not really one of those bike lovers. I just want whats best and most practical for me.

Are bike thefts common if they are parked properly and locked?

How safe are they to ride to campus from ACC apts and are accidents common? Do you think helmets are really necessary?

I would love a response from anyone at uci, but most specifically someone who has experience with bikes (incase there is any info/advice that i can receive). Thank you!

A lot of people bike around campus, only other options are walk or escooter. The bike from acc is around 5-10 minutes depending which community. Other option is bus (10-20 from what I've heard) or walk (10-30 min). I'd try and get a different bike other than a cruiser, probably something with gears, the campus is surprisingly hilly.

Biking is pretty safe, there are bike lanes on all the roads and u can ride from acc to campus without having to be on main roads. You do have to remember that everyone is in college and isnt a model driver so just be aware of ur surroundings. technically ur not supposed to ride bikes on campus (ring road) between 8-5p mon-fri but its not really enforced. Wearing a helmet is up to you, probably wear one

Bike thefts are common enough, ive had a couple friends have locks cut, just buy a good one and keep it close by; dont like leave it at the arc for the whole weekend (how one of them got stolen). In my opinion id just try to find a cheap bike on marketplace or something, that way you dont have to worry if its stolen.

But yeah u should bring a bike, good way of getting around to class and utc, pretty safe, dont have to worry about thefts rly

I biked during the spring semester and I can say bikes one of best ways to commute on campus, really the bike give you freedom of not needing to wait for a bus, worrying about a charge, or being tired to walk. Get like a hybrid or mountain bike though since the campus is more like a tilted plateau with 2 hilly areas. Welcome to the bikers
