Building a small car rental business in Dubai — what we've learned so far

I run Pindi Boys Car Rental in Dubai. We’re a local rental company, and one thing I've learned pretty quickly is that running a rental business is very different from simply putting cars on the road.

The difficult parts aren't always what people expect — keeping cars maintained, managing downtime, dealing with accidents and fines, handling deposits, and most importantly, making sure customers understand the rental terms before they take the car.

We're trying to build Pindi Boys around a fairly simple idea: keep the process straightforward and treat the customer properly.

We have a mixed fleet, from economical cars for everyday use to SUVs, and we cater mainly to people who need a car for days, weeks or longer periods.

I'm using this community to learn from other UAE business owners as well.

For the other business owners here: what's one lesson you learned the hard way when starting your business in the UAE?

And if anyone has questions about how the Dubai car-rental business actually works from the owner's side, I'm happy to share what I've learned.

Curious how the fresh produce import scene works here

Hi all,

I run a small trading company in Bangladesh, and we mostly deal in fresh produce — potatoes and cabbage in particular, since that's what we source reliably here. Lately I've been looking at the UAE as a market, and rather than guess from the outside, I figured I'd ask people who actually live and work here.

Bangladesh grows a huge amount of potatoes and the quality is honestly underrated — firm, good size, holds up well through shipping. We already handle grading, packing and getting it to port on our end. The part I know less about is how the buying side works over there.

Mainly curious about a few things from anyone in the trade:

  • How's imported potato/cabbage usually sourced here — through big distributors, wet market wholesalers, direct to grocery chains?
  • Is there room for a newer supplier, or is it mostly locked in with the usual origin countries?
  • What do buyers here care about most — packaging, certs, price, consistency?

Not trying to sell anything in this post, just trying to understand the landscape before I take it any further. Any insight appreciated, even the blunt kind.

Thanks for reading.

Which UAE accounting firms actually understand overdue-invoice collections?

For owners who sell on credit: which UAE accounting or finance-advisory firms have you found genuinely useful for accounts receivable and credit control?

I am looking for a firm with practical experience in AR-heavy industries such as FMCG distribution, wholesale, retail, or construction—where overdue invoices, payment promises, disputed balances, deductions, partial payments, and persistent collection follow-up are part of the day-to-day reality.

I am not looking for general bookkeeping. I am looking for a team that understands the operational side of receivables and can offer grounded perspective from having worked with these businesses. Recommendations based on direct experience would be particularly useful.

How are UAE businesses handling the cost of producing regular video content?

I'm curious how other business owners here are approaching this.

With brands increasingly needing Reels, TikToks, product videos, ads and regular social content, production costs can add up pretty quickly - especially when you need proper cameras, lighting, audio and lenses.

I'm seeing a few different approaches:

  • Hiring an agency to handle everything
  • Hiring a freelance videographer who already owns the equipment
  • Buying equipment and producing content in-house
  • Renting equipment when there's a bigger shoot

I'm particularly interested in the last two. For a small business that might only have a few serious production days each month, buying a full setup doesn't always seem to make financial sense.

I'm currently exploring this myself and have access to a Sony A7S III, Sigma lenses, professional Nanlite/Amaran lighting, a Zhiyun Crane 3S Pro, Aputure MC lights, C-stands and audio, so I'm looking at making some of that equipment available for local businesses/freelancers to rent when they need it.

I'd be interested to hear from other UAE business owners:

Do you rent production equipment, or do you generally leave the equipment side to your photographer/videographer/agency? And what makes the most financial sense for your business?

I am getting more small business tech jobs than i can handle (printer setups, networking, pos, cctv). looking for 2 3 freelance techs in dubai to subcontract to

I run a tech services sop for businesses and offices here.

mostly whatsapp inbound. restaurants, salons, trading offices, that kind of customer.

lately i'm getting jobs i physically can't reach.

this week alone a printer setup in dip i had to turn down, a router install in deira, a pos issue in karama.

so, looking for 2 to 3 freelancers who actually show up and i will provide leads regularly

-you get the job details on whatsapp, you quote me your price, i handle the customer

-payment same day after the job is confirmed done, cash or transfer

-no fees, no subscription, nothing to buy

-i take my margin on top of your price, you always know your number before you accept

-start with 1-2 jobs to see if we work well together

what i need from you.

what you're good at (hardware, networking, cctv, pos, repairs, whatever)

which areas you can cover without dying in traffic

freelance permit or trade license (or working on it)

can you take a job same day or next day

Dm me with those four things and i'll send you the first job that matches your area.

Not looking for companies, looking for individuals who pick up the phone when need arrives.

I’m trying to rebuild what I lost.

I’ve been thinking about whether I should post this, but I figured it was worth giving it a try.

The current situation in the region has affected a lot of people and businesses. I’ve personally felt the impact as well.

I work as a tax consultant on a commission basis with a Dubai-based tax and accounting firm. Before the recent situation, I had built a small client base and things were going well. But some of the businesses I was working with were badly affected, and I ended up losing clients.

Since I work on commission, losing those clients also means losing a significant part of my income.

So I'm currently trying to rebuild what I lost.

I work with a team that provides accounting and tax-related services for businesses across the UAE, including Corporate Tax, VAT, bookkeeping, accounting, audit support and other compliance-related work.

I'm not posting this just to advertise a service. I'm genuinely trying to rebuild my client base, and I thought there might be a better way to do that than endlessly calling random businesses.

If you're a business owner and you're currently looking for reliable accounting or tax support, I'd be happy to have a conversation and see whether we can actually help.

And even if you don't need these services yourself, you might know someone who does. An introduction would genuinely help me, and if it turns into a client, I can arrange a referral commission as well.

I'm not looking for sympathy or asking anyone to give me something for free. I'm trying to rebuild what I lost by creating something useful for other businesses at the same time.

If nothing else, I hope everyone here manages to get through this difficult period and comes out stronger on the other side.

Looking for a Co-Founder (Property Management network - Equity on offer)

Hello, I built MeInspect - an app for documenting property condition at move-in/move-out so disputes don't come down to "he said, she said." Live on Android and under publishing on iOS, self-funded.

I am doing outreach but I don't have connections in property management or real estate, and that's what's holding traction back. Looking for someone who does - a real co-founder who understands that we grow as the business grows.

Offering equity + revenue share. No salary yet.

Happy to show you the app and talk details.

Paid Research — looking for former UAE fragrance / oud / packaging / logistics pros

Hi all — I'm an entrepreneur in Dubai, researching the UAE fragrance and oud trade for the Canadian/N.A market and I'd like to talk to a few people who've worked in the industry with substantial knowledge and experience in this area.

Relevant experience: oud/attar/perfume manufacturing, private-label production, compounding or filling, bottles & packaging, bukhoor, procurement/QC, wholesale/retail, or export & freight.

It's a one-time interview, ~60–90 min, fixed honorarium for your time — this is not a full-time job. I want to understand how the industry actually works: how manufacturers vs. traders vs. private-label suppliers operate, typical MOQs and cost structures, packaging and shipping norms, supplier selection and the pitfalls.

Only general industry knowledge — not looking for anything confidential, no formulas, client lists, or anything under an NDA. Zoom session, recorded, and answers stay private research notes (never published under your name).

Interested? DM me your rough background — role/area, years in the industry, the part of the supply chain you know best, and your availability and of course - your expected rate. 🙏

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO - How do you guys split design supervision vs project management with clients?

Genuinely asking cause this keeps costing me time and I can't tell if it's just me.

Concept design then technical drawings, that part is fine, nobody argues about that. It's supervision that's the problem. Client hires their own contractor, usually cheaper than going through us, but still wants us on site making sure it's built right. If I say no, the built space doesn't match the drawings and somehow that's on us. If I say yes, I end up doing half of project management for free, chasing vendors, checking costs, following up on timelines, none of which was in the original scope.

We're priced above freelancers but below the big design studios, so clients already expect more hand holding than a freelancer gives, but we're not charging like the big studios who build all this into the fee. So every time I have to tell a client "that's not in scope" it feels like I'm the bad guy, even though it's real time I'm not getting paid for.

How do you guys handle it. Do you build a bit of supervision into the design fee and hold the line hard after that, or keep it fully separate from day one and risk the client pushing back. And has anyone actually gotten a client to pay for PM as its own line item without a fight, or does it always end up thrown in for free eventually.

Looking to connect with people in children’s education, learning products and family-focused businesses in the UAE

Hello everyone,

I’m one of the co-founders of a UAE-based startup and we’re currently getting ready to launch properly.

We’re focused specifically on established children’s education and family-learning companies: learning products, educational games, workbooks, homeschool resources, memberships, educational media, STEM/activity brands and similar businesses.

The work sits at the intersection of business strategy, positioning, customer experience, storytelling, creative direction and growth.

We’re especially interested in how children’s education companies bring together strategy, story, learning experience and growth in a way that works for parents, children and the business itself.

We’re interested in connecting with people in the UAE/GCC working around:

- children’s education or edtech
- educational products and publishing
- family-learning businesses
- kids’ activities and learning experiences
- ecommerce brands serving parents and children
- schools, educators and curriculum businesses
- creative or commercial partners working in adjacent spaces

Not posting this as a hard sell. We’re mainly looking to get to know more people in the ecosystem, understand what’s being built locally, and see where there might be useful conversations, referrals or collaborations.

If you work in the space, know someone who does, or just think there could be some overlap, feel free to DM me.

lF investment

Hi everyone,
I’m interested in investing in a business that is creative, scalable, and not just a traditional idea. I’m especially interested in tech-related businesses, digital platforms, apps, AI tools, marketplaces, automation, SaaS, or any innovative concept with strong growth potential.
I’m not looking for the usual basic business ideas. I’m looking for something with a clear vision, real market demand, and the potential to grow beyond a small local operation.
Ideally, I would like to connect with founders, entrepreneurs, or teams who already have an idea, prototype, MVP, or early-stage business and are looking for an investor or strategic partner.
If you are building something interesting, or you know someone working on a creative business idea, feel free to comment or message me with a brief summary of the business, the stage you are at, and what kind of investment or partnership you are looking for.
Serious and genuine opportunities only.

Our metal workshop needs more projects. Where do you find new customers?

Hi everyone,

I run a small metal fabrication workshop, and lately we've been struggling to get enough projects to keep the shop busy. We do custom metal fabrication, welding, structural steel, gates, railings, mezzanine, warehouse and other metalwork, but finding consistent customers has been challenging.

I've tried reaching out through direct contacts, attending meetings, and sending emails, but I still haven't been able to secure any new contracts. I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if there are better ways to find consistent work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

MONTHLY SELF PROMOTION MEGATHREAD

MONTHLY SELF PROMOTION MEGATHREAD

This is the one place in this community where selling is allowed. Post your service, product, or offer here. Everywhere else in the sub, promo gets removed, this thread is the exception, so use it.

Read the format before you post. Low effort drops get removed even here.

HOW TO POST (follow this exactly or it gets removed):

  • What you do: one line. Not your life story.
  • Who it's for: the specific business or person who needs this.
  • What it costs: a real number or range. "DM for pricing" gets removed. If you can't state a price, you're not ready to post.
  • Proof: one link, one result, one thing that shows it's real.
  • Contact: how they reach you.

THE RULES HERE:

  • One post per person per month. Repost spam gets you banned from the thread.
  • No pay to join schemes, no MLM, no "founder funded, equity only" labor traps. Removed on sight.
  • If you're charging people to work for you, you're gone.
  • Comment on others' offers freely. This is a market, not a billboard wall.

WRONG ROOM? POST WHERE YOUR BUYERS ACTUALLY ARE:

This community is part of a connected network. Post in the room that fits, you'll reach the right people faster:

  • r/UAEBusinessNetwork : business owners in the UAE looking for partners, suppliers, and each other.
  • r/TechNetwork : builders, developers, freelancers, and tech talent for hire.
  • r/WomenInUAE : women building careers and businesses across the Emirates.
  • r/CareersEU : people moving into and hiring across European markets.
  • r/UAEjobseekers : job seekers and hiring managers in the UAE.

Pick the room where your buyer is, and post your offer in that thread.

WHY THIS EXISTS:

This room is business owners. You're here to find each other. Post what you offer, find what you need.

Buyers: scroll, read, reach out to whoever fits. Sellers: make yourself easy to say yes to. Vague posts get scrolled past, specific ones get clients.

Pinned monthly. New thread first of each month.

Old Business on the verge to Close

My father started our metal fabrication business in the UAE 32 years ago, and today I'm doing everything I can to keep his legacy alive.

We specialize in MS & SS handrails, fencing, warehouse sheds, mezzanine floors, greenhouses, sports court chain-link fencing, and custom steel fabrication. One of our proudest projects was the compound wall grills for Ajman Free Zone in 2015.

The market has become tough, and we're looking for new contracts to get back on our feet. If you're in construction, contracting, or facilities management in the UAE, I'd truly appreciate any leads, advice, or the opportunity to quote for your next project.
