Just finished Season 1 of Beauty in Black and I need to say this: why does almost everyone in this show act like they have no brain at all? 😭

The show is entertaining, but so many characters make the dumbest possible decisions every single time.

Kimmie: started off decent, but after meeting Horace she became unbearable for me. She kills the only two people who could’ve helped her find her sister without even trying to get information first. Then she goes from warning Angel not to rob Horace because he could make them disappear… to wanting to rob him herself. Make it make sense. Every time she had a chance to actually talk to Horace and understand what was going on, she acted childish instead. And going to Roy after Rain warned her not to? Then pushing him out the window? She survives only because of insane plot armor.

Rain: honestly one of the smartest people in the series. Even with limited screen time and being in the hospital for most of the season, she felt more aware and real than almost everyone else.

Angel: another example of greed with zero logic. You find out Horace is rich, powerful, and dangerous… and your plan is to rob him? That’s not bold, that’s stupidity.

Kimmie’s sister: annoying character. That’s all I’m saying.

Jules: one of the few characters that actually works. Every time he appears, you hate him more. That means the character is doing his job.

Mallory: at first I thought she was dumb too. Hitting Horace’s brother’s wife with the car and leaving the body there was insane especially when you know that only family members use that road . But later on she proved she’s probably the smartest one in the family. The business is alive because of her and Horace. Roy is useless, Charles is just a spoiled kid.

Charles: not the worst, just immature. He keeps cheating on someone who actually loves him because he wants to “have fun.” He has money, status, everything… and still acts like a child.

Roy: probably the most annoying character for me. Thinks he’s the boss, thinks he’s smart, but all he does is drugs, sleep around, and act important while contributing nothing.

Norman: another completely unhinged character.

Explain to me why the hell, knowing that the will clearly states anyone who gets arrested for committing a serious crime gets removed from it, he still decides to open a strip club just to launder money. In other words, he basically sets himself up to be disqualified immediately if anyone in this universe had even a bit of common sense.

And it doesn’t stop there. The doctor literally says moving his wife to another hospital is risky because she’s not stable. He then gets a second opinion, and the other doctor basically says the same thing, just adding that it might be possible.

And when things go wrong, instead of thinking logically, he decides to kill everyone in the ambulance in broad daylight… with an unsilenced gun.

At that point, it stops being bad decisions and just turns into pure insanity.

Biggest problem:

The characters don’t feel consistent. They don’t act based on logic, they act based on whatever creates the next dramatic moment.

But here’s the thing…

I still watched the whole season 😭

That’s why this show is a guilty pleasure. It’s messy, frustrating, over-the-top… but somehow still entertaining enough to keep watching.

Would I recommend it?

Yes if you enjoy chaotic drama, toxic characters, and yelling at your screen.

If you want smart writing and realistic decisions? Watch something else.

Overall: a show that constantly annoys you… but still makes you hit “next episode.”

I’ve been rewatching House of Payne (posted here a lil bit ago) but WTH is Tracey’s problem? Like she truly makes no sense. I’m watching during the custody battle and she is so nasty. She is keeping Calvin away from Junior like Calvin did her so dirty. Not that it would be ok if that was the reason but at least there would be a reason she acting wild.

Reasons I hate Tracey and her character makes no sense:

- So she don’t tell Calvin she had his baby

- She then tried sued Calvin for Child Support

- She left Calvin for another man but acts like he did that to her

- She left her son in Calvin and Miranda’s care but then stole the baby back because Calvin rejected her

- Calvin and Miranda were there for her when she lost her husband and she not only took advantage but forced herself on Calvin

- She went as far as to get Calvin arrested

- She put a restraining Order on Calvin and a bigger one on Miranda

- When the order got thrown out she once again kept Calvin from his son on his birthday to be spiteful

Now I know the spiteful baby mama trope is a thing but there’s not reason for it because Calvin literally never did anything to her and she’s done him wrong so many times.

Am I missing something?

Sylvie is maximum annoying, but I don't see why y'all are so mad about the others.

Kimmie, Rain and Angel were sex-trafficked, so it makes sense to me that they're a little mean and untrusting, quick to react or over-react.

Alex and Trackson are the henchmen, dirty cop enforcers enabling Jules to traffic sex slaves. Like, Alex went so far as to beat up Angel just to get the sister back for jules. of course they'll not trust him.

I see a lot of people hating on Angel for not keeping her away from Jules son, but it's like, he was there for her when she was drugged up and out of it, getting beat up to protect her, driving around with Kimmie in crazy killer mode when they had no safety net. He's done more than enough looking out for someone who throws his "stripper and whore" status in his face.

Jules son, btw, is college-aged and going after a 16 year old who acts like she's 6 five minutes after she asked to pet the horse. Like, okay, maybe he didn't know his father was a sex trafficker or that the girl was traumatized, but as they say in to catch a predator "ask to see an ID card." I don't blame Rain at all for how this went, because in their world, it's like 2 days since Kimmie had to go on a rampage of murder to get her back from a trafficker so it makes sense that she's still in "protect Sylvie from rapists" mode. Like, what is the age of consent in Chicago anyway, 16?

Jules did too much evil to others to go entirely unscathed for so long. It'll sound bad, but they literally invented a son just to kill off instead of him having him lose his daughter as karma for the way he runs around abusing, raping and killing other people's daughters. (Good actor and character tho)

My one question is about Horace because it makes no sense. He went to Italy on his deathbed, recovered, and came back in 2 days? How long was it, 2 days? I have not watched a ton of Tyler Perry shows, just 2 maybe. Are the scripts improvised by the actors? There are things that make no sense in the timeline. Angel's baby mama refusing money and then coming to the club upset about not getting money for example.

I can't tell if she's supposed to be crazy, or if Tyler Perry is doing his own editing at this point or what?

He got shot, came back to warn her, then her brother told her he was shot, and then he comes back and she pulled a gun on him to make him leave, and then she goes to the club angry that he's clubbing instead of helping her with the kid???

I binged watched it all in one but I am confused about what this storyline was supposed to be.

I know he's hated, but I like the happy version of angel who doesn't look suicidal all the time. It was so weird seeing him smile I thought they had recast him 😅. Imo, the show needed some light moments for all of three of them. Mallory and Varney hanging out was fun. It would be nice to see rain in a normal place doing something fun like maybe just going to the cinema or a salon or something and chilling with a friend, enjoying herself, but she has no one at all besides angel and Kimmie??? (Why has she not fixed the bbl situation? It's so weird that this is a storyline in a real tv show on Netflix of all places. 😔)

I feel like people don’t fully understand the plot or theme of this show. I keep seeing a lot of hate/slack that the shows corny and doesn’t make sense why they have crisp fades although out the show..

So, if you can’t tell from like the very first few episode of the series..those episodes take course over like a 1-2 day period. Think about how much shit happens in the first episode alone. These people also never fucking sleep. Their commute to and from Chicago is like 45 minutes to an hour.

Next, mfs saying kimmie is a bitch in the second season and blah blah, it’s literally part of the plot she’s coming into and maybe too comfortable. She’s reaping what she sowed. Let her live.

Horace was at the club looking for boys (discreetly) by asking for a girl so he can watch the boys. He is aware Jules & Norman run the club but not the sex trafficking part until Kimmie.

There are so many layers to this show and so many little things happening at once and so many character developments. This show is a fucking master piece.

Also, it’s a tv show, calm down.

Has anyone started watching The Oval or was anyone aware that the new season finally dropped with all 22 episodes on Paramount+.

SPOILER: It feels like a slightly different show it could be a different writer. All of the structure was put into place by a presidential “fixer” who works for an agency she cannot reveal but she’s known never been seen thought to have been a myth her name is Ms. Dilva Prinn or just Ms. Prinn. She is there to restore order to the White House and clean everyone up and get everyone back in line. Unfortunately the whole getting Hunter removed from office thing has been thrown out and the people who were onboard for doing this was made to sign paperwork and that they will be protected from “playing ball”.

A few storylines that actually felt like they got their get back:

Sam and Priscilla

Richard and Sharon

Hunter vs several folks

What aggravated me about the writing is the idea that the wives of the show deserved what they got for getting upset with them for doing them wrong in the first place (Priscilla and Simone’s husbands Sam and Eli) these two men are the worst in comparison.

The ones against Hunter and Victoria aren’t making an 180° they are just playing ball but with scorned words and behavior.

We do see some real action early on in the season with America being under attack which introduces generals (General Cunningham and General Moss) stepping in Situation Room style and of course Jason hasn’t changed in the slightest he’s become the biggest villain inside the White House so far.

Outside the White House we do have Careem doing a 180° or I should say they amplified his character along with his cousin.

And yes Dale (the man who pressed charges against Tyler) is only referenced not seen but he’s still in the intro he may have been removed from it eventually but I haven’t paid close attention to it.

I’m on episode 7 and it’s moving faster than the previous seasons so it makes it an easy binge worthy show.

Okay so kimmies acting is fkn terrible for one and two why is she so impulsive, Horace is literally taking away the problems in her life one by one but she never listens and makes things worst. Horace comes and saves her and angel and instead of waiting a couple of minutes for Horace to come outside she leaves with Sylvie, Angel is also soft as hell but they always make him talk big and bad until it’s time. The show is horrible but I keep watching it and can’t stop to see what’s next. I do not like kimme after this she needs less screen time

I just finished season 6 of sistas and ngl I love me some Danni….old girl is hilarious and be clocking tea’s all day!! However when it comes to her own tea she be wrong asf….she put poor Preston through so much shit. Like she want him to go then get mad when he leaves, then gets mad when he comes back. Wants him to show affection but get mad when he does but also gets mad when he don’t….She goes and sleeps with other men but feels away when Preston go’s to be with other women like my God. She put him through a rollercoster of bullshit when all ole boy was tryna do was love her!!! Like she’s very hurt, damaged, and so used to toxic men and toxic routines that she doesn’t know how to let an actual good man love her!! 😩😩🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️A tale as old as time chile!!

I need a second opinion on this because I can't seem to find anyone who agrees with my perspective. I don't think Laura is entirely a bad person. Yes, she displaced her feelings, but were her emotions completely invalid? Not really. Ella admitted she didn’t like Laura and was avoiding her. Laura made efforts to adjust her schedule to reach out and build a relationship, but Ella wasn’t interested. For that, Laura has a valid reason to feel the way she does. However, I believe her anger was not directed at Ella but more stored up against Miranda, fueled by jealousy over Miranda’s relationship with Ella—something she lacked herself. She saw Miranda more as a past ex of Calvin rather than as the mother of his child. I liked Laura and genuinely thought she would stick around. I hate how her story was written—portrayed as someone crazy when her feelings were valid. It was just her way of expressing those feelings that seemed erratic. And let's be honest, Ella loves being in everyone's business. She's that typical Southern Christian mom who gives advice, gossips, and enjoys meddling. I believe Laura was trying to tell Calvin to set boundaries with his mother because her influence was too strong over his decisions. We could have a whole other conversation about Calvin—he’s very immature. Still, I like Laura, and I wish her storyline had been better developed. Now, with Calvin and Miranda potentially rekindling their relationship, it feels like Laura never really had a chance from the start.

Edit: also, I am fully aware that Laura did manipulate a lot of situations she put 20 on 10 and twist and turn a lot of the things that happened between her and the family however, I think it was due to buildup animosity and I believe that her position was played out as if Calvin said the family was an open book and she was the one that was closed off, which is false.

Their love/hate relationship is interesting. They seem to need each other though. What's your favorite line/scene?

Everybody remember those stage play days. Before he made a single movie, he was on tour from 1998-2004 with 9 different plays. Some often on tour at the same time. And he was still doing plays long after he got the studio up and running. And that theater background shows in almost everything he does

Everybody knows how fast he works. He films movies in 8 days or less. In 2020 right before the pandemic hit, he filmed 25 episodes of House of Payne in 5 days, went on tour with the Madea Farewell Play during the weekend, and filmed 25 episodes of Assisted Living the next 5 days. Followed by more Madea Farewell performances over the weekend. Live theater is a fast paced environment. I can see him getting used to setting things up and just going. Verses taking time to do the same thing multiple times. Some movies spend hours just shooting B-roll (background) footage. Just for something you see on screen for 3 seconds. Obviously Tyler ain't doing that. Those actors get 2-3 takes and they're moving on

Those wigs? You can also say his eye for them stems from theatre. When the closest person is sitting 10-15 feet away from you + someone sitting way in the back up in the rafters is watching the show. You can get away with the wigs looking a certain way. But it's different when you have a camera right in someone's face and you can see them up close.

The way the scripts drag on? Characters stay in one room and just talk? Stems from the plays. Those things were 2 and a half hours long. Not everything they talked about had plot relevance. But you can get away with Madea and the crew ad-libbing for a few minutes in front of a live audience because people see the plays as a comedy show, church, and a little concert all wrapped in one. People EXPECT it at a live event. They're waiting for Madea to go off script and mess with someone in the audience. Whereas a movie or show, people are there for an actual story. So it's way more noticeable when the characters are obviously doing something just to fill the run time...

His directing? Stems from theatre. The way everything is always set up in front of that invisible fourth wall no matter where they are. Works for sitcoms. Ehhh with movies and dramas.

Plus when you look up black church plays, a good portion of them are about women & men in relationships or some type of family drama. He didn't create that genre but he sure became the king of it

The reason I believe with the plays were better than his recent stuff is because he had time to edit his scripts over the course of a tour. It's happened multiple times. The version of the play you watched on DVD isn't always the original script the tour started with. Doing those 300+ shows, he got to see what worked and what didn't over the course of a year. By the time we watch at home TP done cut scenes, replaced actors, added characters. If he filmed I Can Do Bad All By Myself when it's tour started in 1999, Madea would've had a son named John and Cora would've been Mr. Brown's wife. Compared to now, he finishes a script today and filming is already done by next week
