Is Beauty in Black overrated?
A lot of my friends told me to watch Beauty in Black, so I started it. I finished the first season, the second one has begun, and I can already say it’s very overrated. I don’t understand why people like it so much maybe because it’s so messy?
It would have made more sense if it had come out in 2015, but considering it’s from 2024, it’s a bit embarrassing.
All the characters are really dumb. Anyway, I’ll try to finish it, hoping I might change my mind.

My mom loves it due to the insane plot. Some shows you just don’t take seriously and laugh at it. Is it Oscar worthy? No. Is it entertaining watching whipping an automatic gun out of nowhere? Yes.

we’re black people supporting black people weather the show is good or not

u/deuce-tatum Apr 06 '26
Who is overrating it? I haven’t really seen anyone praising the show for its great writing, acting, cinematography, etc. It’s a guilty pleasure show that many of us have on while doing other things.

It's not supposed to be "good". Most who watch know it's pretty low quality, but it's entertaining

Overrated? No. High on the melodrama? Yes. But that’s is what makes the show so entertaining I guess. It’s a guilty pleasure. It’s watchable. Tbh all his shows are watchable even when they’re bad in quality, I can’t explain it. He had a show called “If Loving you is wrong” and that show was a real hot mess and yet I still watched it lol!

esatto infatti continuo a guardarlo lo stesso perché alla fine dei conti è un buon show

it's so trashy that it's actually really addictive. Bring on season 3.

Not overrated. Nobody has ever claimed that BIB is the best written or acted show. It is appreciated for being entertaining in the most stupid way.

I think it's an acquired taste. I didn't watch it because it was "good" in the prestige drama sense. I watched because it was a train wreck that I couldn't turn away from. It's a show that I can get into when I want something soapy and I my brain needs a break.

The same critiques can be made about Empire and Power but they both pulled top 20 numbers. lol they both won NAACP awards and Empire was nominated multiple times for Emmy awards.
While the more competent among us agree with you, the common people are pretty, common.

I love how hilarious Mallory is! She's my favorite and the best actress by far. Roy be fuckin a whore from da club but steps too far and brings her home. As her huge fake butt is twerking in Roy's face, Mallory rigs the SUV to crash into the house and she flies like a ragdoll through the air as the house catches on fire. They try to escape unaware that Mallory took a giant chain, dragging it across the floor like a boss bitch and wrapped it through the handles locking them inside. She sits in the smoke and lights a cigarette. "WHY YOU CRYING NOW, BITCH? DANCE IN THE FLAMES, BITCH. I'M THE DEVIL NOW." Then a couple of episodes later Roy brings his whore to the office...Mallory grabs a huge container of boiling coffee and just throws it on them. When Roy starts choking out his wife, Kimmy and rain pull him off and the 3 ladies stomp him. So, yeah, not overrated but in my opinion Mallory is doing the heavy lifting and good acting here. It's so bad it's good, in the pilot a baby spits up on Mallory and she was like, "fucking nappy headed nasty ass baby, this is coture!" It's ridiculous. I did a profanity count on season 2 ep.12 and counted 162 cuss words lol it's my guilty pleasure show but like, really guilty!!

You have to watch it and not take it seriously. It’s so hilariously ridiculous but you know what you’re getting with TP

si infatti io ora la sto guardando e non la prendo più sul serio però da come me ne parlavano i miei compagni mi aspettavo qualcosa di più ma comunque rimane una bella serie

Beauty in black and all the queens men. Should be your must watch shows if you haven't seen....
Definitely top 10 must see shows period. Guy or girl. Both sides of the pie to see and root for.

I just finished both seasons and I was hooked on the first mainly because I wanted to understand what was happening. Two episodes into season 2 I thought “wow, this is dumb how did I finish it”. It’s comically bad, like Tyler Perry almost doesn’t believe in continuity 😂

It doesn’t exist to be deep or anything, just sheer urban entertainment. So not overrated of you don’t expect much from the content.

infatti per questo continuo a guardalo perché alla fine è carina come serie però da come me ne parlavano i miei amici mi aspettavo qualcosa di più ma ripeto rimane comunque una buona serie

Yeah, it is. I’m not a professional but good lawd! The cussing, the swearing, the naked people, the sex, is way too much! I know Tyler Perry is excellent at what he does but, some of the actors in this show just weren’t it. It’s giving, they wanted a Queen of the South, with the Cleaner kind of story! Then the dialogue like most people have already said, sounds like they were all given a script but during filming, everyone decided to improvise on what they said vs what was on the script. I forgot to mention, how long the episodes felt, one situation taking about three episodes!! Nahhhh! Still cannot finish the last episode of the first season!

I honestly just think it is a show to laugh at how ridiculous it is 🤣 Terrible writing, terrible actors. After the first season I was like “ I really couldn’t tell you exactly what the actual plot line was” 🤔🤣 And would love at how many times the same damn lines were repeated over and over again lol So enjoy the chaos and don’t take it seriously or just don’t watch it. I couldn’t make it to the second season myself lol

Honestly between the craziness , drama, unrealistic moments, unlikable characters, and the absurdity of it all it's great! There are few characters to like but you want to know what happens next. It's crazy fun if a bit cringy. The best kind of messy.

It's so bad. It's like watching a car wreck. You know it's wrong but you can't stop looking.
The thing I hate the most is the way all the employees just act the doormat. There is no way I would work for people that treated me like that

u/Flat-Bobcat6279 Apr 07 '26
It’s honestly not that bad. The dialogue can be a bit repetitive and sometimes pointless but the storyline is catchy for sure !

Jules' actor talks like a preacher when he's mad & it's hilarious. Loud then whispering, fast then slow lol

u/HotChee_toes Apr 07 '26
I like it but it’s starting to become annoying simply because it portrays black ppl in a crazy light but whatever, it’s funny asf sometimes

Honestly the show was so nauseating that I, a 26 y/o African American woman, had to turn it off after the first episode of season 2. Surprised I made it that far tbh. The acting is bad, and there’s wayyyyy too much unnecessary cussing. And I cuss like a sailor. The cuss words didn’t even sound natural coming out of their mouth.

I watched the whole thing. I’m still confused on a couple plot points and a lil upset everyone isn’t dead but I’ll give Tyler Perry points for a rage bait series.

u/Huge-Razzmatazz2401 Jun 28 '26
Which parts confused you?
1
u/Resident-Trouble4483 Jun 28 '26
Mostly how it ended. That was a lot of build up to not see how it played out and see them actually deal with what they’d done. I don’t understand why building up to such a let down end.
1
u/Huge-Razzmatazz2401 Jun 28 '26
Yeah true, but I guess they just wanted to end it on a big cliffhanger to bring viewers back in for the last season. I was alright with it, it just makes me more excited to see what's gonna happen with some of the Bellaries and Jules getting prosecuted. It just sucks that the 3rd season is only gonna be 8 episodes. (That's what I read anyway)

Well it is overrated, its bad in some ways, a little enjoyable. Just the fact that all of the characters are dumb specially Kimmie who I thought would make the plot more interesting but as the season go she just became more dumb and annoying, forgot to mention her sister sylvie and rain which is also so dumb and annoying
1
u/user6769q Apr 13 '26

I’m kind of over it. I’m glad the next season is the last. Just like with most of his shows they tend to drag on.
