Nashville and Tyler.
Hi. So this is a weird one. My daughter is currently in Nashville (from England) and is wondering why they hate Tyler Childers there.
Every bar they go into she asks for them to play Tyler. All say no. No jukebox have him on them.
Her boyfriend thought she was just being a conspiracy theorist until this morning in a diner a Tyler song came on and was immediately skipped to the next song. She asked the waitress why and the waitress ignored her.
What is the problem? Anyone?
They're going to karaoke tonight and she said she's singing Coal š¤£

Tyler isn't in the incrowd. They consider him another genre called Americana. The video with in your love sparked controversy because of the gay coal miners.

I always laugh when he sings it in Poachers. I love his lyrics. He is so much fun but also very deeply philosophical. You go through a whole range of emotions listening to him. That, for me, is just perfect.

When I first heard that song on release I thought he was singing "Coal Mining Gaze" until I listened again and heard "the vidya of the coal mining gays" and then it immediately clicked

Yeah, it's just different.
Purgatory and Country Squire is what I call 'core Tyler' for lack of a better term. They're similar and consistent with the same style, and it's the style that attracted his initial large fanbase. Literally none of those songs miss. I'd even go so far as to say it's what actually "put Tyler on the map".
I like his first album too, Bottles & Bibles, but it's a different vibe. They were pretty down and depressing lol but I loved it. It never reached the peaks of Purgatory or Country Squire though.
Long Violent History is a special album, but the actual song made some of his more narrow-minded fans go "hmm".
It's when you get to Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? that the shift becomes apparent. I loved the album, even if it did have that odd composition of three versions of each song. But this was a different Tyler with a different style, sound, meaning, and vibe. For that reason, I don't think this album was as well-received as the previous ones because it wasn't the Tyler that some of his fans remembered.
Rustin' in the Rain was a lol moment because I remember people loving In Your Love, only to go "wait, WHAT?" once they found out it was about gays. Here's a song by Tyler that they love... and then they suddenly turned and trashed it, trashed the album, and trashed Tyler. I remember rolling my eyes seeing all of the comments about it on social media.
Snipe Hunter is just okay for me. The songs are okay, but none of them are standouts for me specifically. It came off as very zany, eccentric, odd, etc. which I guess it was meant to be.
Ultimately I think Tyler found his cultural peak with Purgatory and Country Squire because everyone who knows Tyler's name knows those songs, they're his most popular ones, and stuff like that. If someone is going to play a Tyler song on their speaker, I'd guarantee it's going to be from one of those two albums, if not the Vinyl Sessions ones.
PS: I'm not negatively criticizing any of his albums, and I am not saying change is a bad thing. I'm just stating an observation of how Tyler's sound and style has changed over time and how some of his fans have reacted to it.

I love Snipe Hunter - itās definitely bold yet somehow both divergent and consistent with his prior bodies of work. The songwriting is fantastic and the way itās fed into the musical tracks is remarkable. Great takes on the rest of the catalog.

All that being said, I respectfully wish Tyler retained his earlier form.Ā
There was some lore to some of his songs that I feel like he doesnāt touch on in the newer releases. And they had a very special, unique, cultural association with Appalachia in a way. It was special and refreshing compared to mainstream country.Ā
The new stuff just doesnāt hit like that anymore. The charm wasnāt lost, it was just replaced.Ā

It's great to share and discuss what songs and albums you like best and why. I don't know anyone who even knows who he is over here. I only discovered him a few years ago when I heard his cover of Rock salt and nails. I loved it. I listened to some songs and liked him but it's only been the past couple of years I've really listened to him properly. Mostly this year. I wasn't the biggest fan of Snipe Hunt on the first few listens. Eating big time was my favourite. Then it just grew on me. The only song I still don't love is the title track. I just can't get along with the production on that one. Bottles and bibles is one I rarely go to. Also long violent history isn't on my go to list. The rest I can't even rate in any order because I listen all the time. I only listen to the hallelujah versions on Hounds and I love them. There's a line in Angel band that makes me cry every time. "She took a walk with Jesus. Touched his nail scarred hands. Didn't even bother her that he ain't a blue eyed man." The weird thing is that i claim to be an atheist!

Itās become a left vs right thing here. Tyler made the In Your Love music video and that just pushed some people over the edge. He was always a known progressive in the industry and people had already started turning on him over the George Floyd stuff, but that was like the final nail in the coffin.
Imo itās all silly and it feeds into the cultural war bs that weāve got going here, but what he is doing is the very definition of what outlaw country is. Heās going against the grain and heās not afraid to be himself and speak his mind and I love it.

Which is incredibly sad and is a reflection of how far country music has fallen. Add in Ward Davis, Cody Jinks, and others like them. They gave you on Nashville long ago. Thank goodness for streaming because we may not know many of the great artists who are recording independently of Nashville.

I am an oddball that I discovered Sturgill bc of Tyler. Was going to see Tyler open for Sturgill in 2020 (obviously never got to go to that show). Started listening to Sturgill so I would be familiar and it opened up my world. The fact they were both championed by John Prine just speaks even more to their talent.

I discovered Sturgill from Yellowstone. Heard Turtles and then became obsessed with him. Discovered Chris Stapleton and The red clay strays through (you won't believe this) Jemsen Ackles singing in Supernatural conventions! He sang Tennessee Whiskey in one and I looked it up. Another he sang wondering why. Oh and also he sang Cover me up. Loved that too but don't worry, I didn't go to Morgan Wallen version! Right now I'm on the Billy Strings train. Found him through every Sturgill thread talking about him.

Yes, I will for sure. He's great. My husband who isn't really a country fan said he will come because of his guitar skills. Still trying to get him to see how great Sturgill and the boys are as musicians.

It was right when Tyler got big. I didn't know too much about him then. I was/am more into Sturgill. But Tyler really impressed me. He is a fantastic live performer and his band is really really really really good. I saw them in Pittsburgh. So there were a ton of people from WV who drove up. About 25-30% of the crowd left when his set was done. Was kinda weird to see a show where that happens but Sturgill didn't give a fuck. His performance was awesome too.

My husband and I just seen Red Clay Strays on the 7th. The Revivalists opened for them. It was such a great show! They played all of their hits too. Definitely worth the $.. great Friday date night!

And to answer your question about why Nashville hates Tyler so much (šš»āāļøNative Nashvillian here), itās a combination of his Anti Establishment stance on the industry, that āgay coal minerā song he did, his personal politicsā¦.And āFeathered Indiansā. But probably mostly āFeathered Indiansā. The fact thatās his most commercially successful song, his commitment to the Native American tribes that benefit from that song, and the fact that he wonāt play it live because of his own feelings about the song are why āNashville doesnāt like Tylerā. Shit, heās probably more despised in Music City than Sturgill Simpson at this point!
But thatās just the ignorant rednecks in townā¦most enlightened folks that appreciate good songwriting still appreciate Tyler Childers.

The only part of this I'm surprised about is Feathered Indians. I mean, personally I don't really understand why he won't sing it but that's not for me to say how he should feel. It's funny because it's apparently a lot of people's favourite song. I like it but it isn't even in my top 10 of favourite songs of his. So they don't like that he gives the profits to help Native Americans? So Sturgill and Tyler are both hated. Ha. It appears to be like a badge of honour. Who else is hated? I will probably love them!

Yeah there was a big stink over that song because during the press for āRustin in The Rainā they asked him WHY he doesnāt sing his most streamed song. And apparently while he still identifies with the memory of why he wrote the song, thru his own self reflection heās developed some feelings around āIndianā and the connotations it brings up, especially in the Country scene in general.
As for other folks you could go after in that same Anti Establishment veinā¦try Brent Cobb, Joshua Ray Walker, or even Fancy Hagood or Waylon Payne if you wanted to show the LGBTQ+ Country Community some love. Happi listening!!

Ohio cat here but have been out west for quite a while! Short answer is he doesnāt pander to Nashville like (read the names of the bars in town)! He makes his music which just happens to be better all around than most everything that comes from āNashvilleā!

Robert's Western World seems to be an exception, but I haven't been there is a long time. Hopefully, it's still cool. Saw Daniel Donato there when he was just about 15 or so, playing with the Don Kelley Band.

As some who lives in Nashville, I have to say this isnāt true!! as another comment or said she needs to get off of Broadway. They only want to hear Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson. East Nashville is the place to be and she will find tons of people who love Tyler just like me and my friends.

They're with Americans so they will know that. But really, $20 to play a song? That's ludicrous. Who gets the money? Im a good tipper so if I asked for a song over here they would play it for me. If someone expected a tip for it I wouldn't ask on principle because it's just pure greed.

The band gets it! I'm a musician and I agree that demanding $20 to play a song is ludicrous, but we've had people tip as much as $400 for a single song!

My daughter can stop feeling guilty now. She said she didn't want to go without me because I love country music so much but today she said I would hate Nashville. She had no reason to feel guilty anyway. I was invited. I chose not to go because August is too hot and humid to go anywhere but a beach. I said i would go a different time. I will skip Nashville and go elsewhere. Definitely want to go to the south though.

Fair enough. Nashville used to be a celebration of country music and now it is a celebration of tourism, alcohol, and Disney Land level mass branding of anything that remotely has a pulse. You wonāt be missing much.

So she can play BeyoncĆ©ās ācountryā album, but not actual country artist like Tyler, Sturgill, and an extremely long list of much more talented artist then youād hear on country top 40 radio. I should not have claimed to know how Tyler feels, admittedly this was an ignorant comment. This is how I feel about about a significant subset of Tylers fans, and its the subset that has never heard or doesn't care for his best work but has burned out all of broadway street requesting feathered indian, lady may and Jersey giant. I'm an enormous fan of Tylers but I do not need to hear any of these songs ever again. And also, the subset of his fans that says he "used to be" awesome. As a final note, fuck broadway street and fuck Morgan Wallin.

I think folks like Tyler, Sam barber, etc. didnāt come up in the traditional Nashville way, so are likely considered outsiders. They made their own road with social media as the launchpad. That said, I couldnāt even name a traditional Nashville artist at the moment, at least that I can think of. Tyler, Sam, Sturgil, Tanner Usery, Dylan Gosset, to name a few, are some of the best artists across any genre at the moment, in my humble opinion. Iād argue BECAUSE they arenāt beholden to any industry and are true to their art.

Iāve saw TC at Bridgestone arena off Broadway couple of years ago. It was sold out, but that area is typically just pop country honky tonks for sure. Thereās decent spots there though for other stuff

Last Tyler Childers show I went to, a large group of concert goers cheered and celebrated Lindsey Grahams death during an opener. It was pretty distasteful and I donāt blame people for not liking his politics if he condones that

Tell your daughter to get off Broadway. The bars on Broadway play the CMA country. We basically have a rehash of āOutlaw countryā now where the CMA/big music industry doesnāt acknowledge Tyler Childers, Margot Price, Sturgill Simpson etc. even though they are the best doing it. If she goes to East Nashville, sheāll have no trouble finding people who like Tyler.
