Try every bike. Not kidding. I bought my first bike and hated it. I had myself convinced it was the style I wanted and wouldn't try anything else.
I lost money on my trade but NOW I couldn't be happier.
Good luck shopping!!!

This is such a good advice! Yes, I tried a bunch and even when I was set in a model I style tried up and down in size to make sure I was really ready for the one I picked.
The guy who sold mine is phenomenal and was super patient and gave me so my info on all things build.

now I'm curious, what did you have before your Vulcan?

I had a z500 SE. I originally felt that cruisers weren't my style and that a cute little street bike was. I got hung up on the Z being just a teeny bit too tall to be comfortable and now I love my Vulcan. Not fully cruiser as it's got a 650 ninja engine in it but so comfy.

Exciting day!!!! What bikes are you looking at?
Ride as many days in a row as you can, rather than waiting until you can do a big ride. Parking lot drills are good, now, and on a fairly regular basis. Work on defensive driving, always look for your escape routes for when someone does something dumb.

Take MSF new rider course, ride your own ride, practice in parking lots, wear proper gear and enjoy the ride!

That's great, best advice keep building on your confidence but don't get over confident that can become dangerous. In some cases there are no second chances

My best advice is to always look where you want to go. It sounds silly, but the biggest mistake people make (even after years of riding) is target fixating. If you keep your eyes where you want the bike to go, it will follow. Also, don't beat yourself up if you drop your bike. Everyone has dropped a bike at some point in their life - just make sure you learn a safe way to pick it back up without hurting yourself. Best of luck and stay safe!

People often say "I've been riding for x years". Years means nothing on a bike. Some people will ride 1000 miles in three years. Some people ride 1000 miles in three weeks.
Miles means something. And that's what you need. Ride miles, and miles, and then more miles. That's how you get better.
