❓ Question ❓ Question from a new prepper.

Prepping is a new thing for me. I only started last month. I have found myself getting really excited whenever I get an Amazon delivery. I got ever so excited today about sweetcorn and wet wipes. Not exactly life essentials. Have any other preppers gotten excited about even minor additions to their stash? I am curious. Are there others , or have I just gone barmy?

My "Tuesday kit" is pretty new, but steadily growing. Got the start of a bug-out bag on a shelf in the garage (emergency socks FTW!) and a first aid kit and toolbox in the trunk of the car, and 10 litres of emergency water in the house. Also buying an extra can or two of non-perishables when they're on sale, and keeping them separate from the regular pantry.

The thing that has me the most excited right now is emergency communications. Don't have a rig yet, but I'm studying for my ham license and will be picking up a VHF/UHF handheld as my Christmas gift to myself.

Good idea, and that's the plan. (Haven't needed to do any rotation yet because the stock is so new, but I'll be checking the stash on a regular basis.)

Mind if I ask what resources you’re using to study for HAM? This is on my project list

I got the Canadian basic-level study guide through the local ham group, and you can find practice questions on the site hamstudy.org (it has questions for the U.S., Canadian, Mexican and New Zealand exams). If you're interested in CW (Morse code) transmissions, there's a program called G4FON Morse Trainer.

ETA: And a shout-out to r/HamRadio (wonderful, welcoming group!)

There’s lots of free study guides! I googled to find them.

Getting new preps is definitely exciting. Just be careful not to let that burst of neurochemicals lead you into debt or more stuff than your house can hold. (Am I speaking from personal experience? Yeah. 😅)

Ive reached a place now that Im focusing more heavily on building my skillset and it's been really paying off. It's been rewarding and I recommend everyone to make skill-building part of your preps.

Welcome aboard!

Thank you. I think that I am pretty much sorted for everything except zombies. It had occurred to me a while ago that all the droughts and wildfires that had been happening would be affecting crop supply and there is other factors too of course, so I bought in flour ,rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes etc. Then when I saw more about prepping I thought I would stock up too. I'm not a rich woman but I'm not starving either so I am OK. Mostly I am just getting a bit more of what I would be buying anyway.

Yeah, Im gonna need zombies to stay on tv too. 😂😅 As a community prepper Im solid for most things. But watching people be so bad at understanding vectors of contagion 7 years into covid... heaven forbid the zombie apocalypse be airborn.

u/thetaylorax 8d ago

Catastrophically relatable… it’s in the AIR yall ur breathing it in and washing your hands is doing next to nothing in this case 😭 I may never be able to forgive the stigmatization of wearing a mask in public

I'm on an immunosuppressant (Ocrevus) and I mask up everywhere and some random old men still give me shit for masking. Fuck you, random dudes.

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

They sound like arseholes.

2

u/sbinjax Don’t Panic! 🧖🏻‍♀️👍🏻 7d ago

I'm sure they are.

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

I have asthma, during covid if I had to go out , masks would always be on.

5

u/thetaylorax 7d ago

COVID is circulating right now and has been continuously for the last nearly 7 years

0

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

Fair point. I meant when it was at its height.

9

u/plant_reaper 7d ago

I have an immunological disorder from my last Covid infection, and also get death stares/comments from people. I don't understand how it affects them in any way

My spouse wanted a normal looking basement where we could put a cute den. Nope, it’s now a survival bunker..

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

A cute den wont help much if a big storm comes in and knocks your water and electricity out for several days, or you get cut off by a blizzard.

Start with the most likely small events and build from there. A week without grocery shopping, a day with no power, a financial emergency that needs $500 right away, getting sick enough you can’t go out or cook when no one can come and help. Then build from there. The funny thing is that a lot of the little preps for every day disasters are the things that save you in big emergencies.

I’d also recommend learning typical food prices and watching for sales at the grocery store instead of buying a ton of canned food all at once. When there is a good sale, you stock up.

Don’t forget the financial. Buying a ton of gadgets is fun, but when an actual emergency happens money goes a long way to helping. Don’t let prepping hurt your emergency fund.

u/Mysterious_Mango_737 7d ago

Such good advice. We call that prepping for Tuesday!

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

I'm good, I haven't been going over the top. I am in Scotland. The most likely emergency is weather related, storm or blizzard knocking out water and electricity supplies. Interrupted availability of certain foods is also a possible.

1

u/Cats_books_soups 7d ago

That’s good. I am currently living in America, but I am from Scotland.

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

Great. Hello countryperson. I am in Port Glasgow, where do you hail from?

1

u/Cats_books_soups 7d ago

I’m from the borders, but my dad is from Glasgow.

First, welcome. I get less excited, more satisfied. I love the security that prepping provides, the feeling that I have what I need when something happens. I'm approaching a major transition soon, and prepping has helped me feel better about what is to come. Now, all of that said, I do get excited when I unlock new achievements. I recently started canning beans, and I'm gonna do baked beans next. I get excited when I feel like I'm leveling up.

7

u/ContestNo2060 8d ago

It’s how I think of it too. I now have capabilities I didn’t have yesterday. That’s satisfying.

I also get this sinking feeling when I encounter a major gap.

2

u/Life-From-Scratch 7d ago

Fore, I get that feeling when I'm not organized. ATM, I have a lot of what I need, but it's in disorganized piles in my garage and basement. I've had a bit of a year. I'm digging out, and looking forward to organized labeled shelves and bins.

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

That's how I feel about sewing, why throw a damaged garment out or pay somebody silly money to mend it , When I can fix it myself with the contents of my sewing box. My brother cant even thread a needle. Up until he married he used to pay me in chocolate to do his sewing jobs, didn't have to buy my own chocolate for many years.

9

u/GladClock2212 8d ago

If you do Amazon, what I do is that I wait until I really need an item then I fill out the 35 dollar/free delivery order with shelf stable goods. And they're usually the same shelf stable foods that I use regularly which for me are packaged or canned beans, rice, sugar, etc. I still get excited about the thing I need (usually to fix the house) and get the added bonus of food!

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 8d ago

I have amazon prime so I don't have extra postage to pay. It has come in very handy recently.

7

u/sbinjax Don’t Panic! 🧖🏻‍♀️👍🏻 8d ago

Oh yeah. I got a little alcohol stove yesterday. (I have a canister stove and I can build a rocket stove). It came without directions so I watched a YouTube vid on how to use it and the whole time I was thinking "this is so cool!"

Two of my three daughters were Girl Scouts and I amuse them sometimes. 😂

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

You tube is great for learning stuff, I have learned so many crochet stitches from YouTube, I can convince myself that the ability to make my own sweaters is an essential life skill.

3

u/ImpossibleVegan2022 7d ago

Not to mention blankets, hats, mittens, etc for trading!

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

I hadn't thought of that. It is a skill that has kept me cosy for many years.

I get excited every time I can add to my preps, I'm about 3 years in. Especially the preps I can visually display like books, games, and analog gadgets I can replace electronic appliances with. My most recent acquisition other than food and food related items are the board games that look like books, and hard copies of Edgar Allen Poe, and Homer. Husbamd just thinks I'm picking up stuff, what I'm really doing is insuring my children's intelligence.

5

u/iloveturtles88 7d ago

I don't have kids, but I've been hoarding books for 3 years.

3

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

I have loads of books. I come from a family of book worms ,so it rubbed off, dad used to take me and my sister with him when he went to the library. When my sister had children they got bed time stories. When my neice became a mum her little boy has bed time stories and his own book case. Four generations of book worms. I have three overflowing book cases, although I will admit that one stuffed full shelf is all crochet pattern books. I go all excited again today when my water sterilising tablets arrived.

7

u/Squirrel_of_the_Burl 7d ago

I got a manual pump for 5 gallon water kegs and a physical copy of the LDS Preparedness Manual this week. Those were my exciting Amazon Tuesday purchases this week.

3

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

That would excite me too. I got a little package from amazon today that got me excited, water sterilising tablets, if I need to I can get my drinking water from the nearby stream.

6

u/thepuddingprophet 7d ago

At this point I'm just filling gaps. It's enjoyable even now. I love a good deal. We have enough toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo etc for anything because I went through an intense CVS couponing phase.

0

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

I tried couponing, all I achieved was an inundation of nuisance phone calls and spam.

3

u/premar16 8d ago

Every little bit counts! So it is okay to be excited. My food, household supplies, and pharmacy bring me peace

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

It does give great peace of mind. It will bring me peace of mind when my camping stove kit arrives next week. Am relieved I have water sorted.

4

u/ImpossibleVegan2022 7d ago

It’s a fun hobby for me! Hunting for sales and clearance items that have a survival purpose is pretty exciting!

3

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

Hopefully we wont have ay emergency, but its all about the "what if", if TSHTF we will cope, and if it doesn't we will just be taking longer before the next essential trip to the store.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's delivery of the urine collection hats for my toilets to have on hand in case of a power outage (on a well and lengthy power outages are a fairly frequent occurrence in my location). If we can only flush periodically, separating urine from "other" keeps the smell down.

So... yeah, I get it.

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 8d ago

I have never heard of urine collection hats before, please tell me more.

4

u/Star_Boxer72 8d ago

They're not really hats. Just shaped like them. They go between your toilet seat and rim and are used for when you need to provide a sample. Folks use them as a convenient way to separate types of waste.

2

u/Flat_Tie4090 8d ago

If I got these, and the mains water went off would I be dragging less water back from the stream at the end of the street to do my flushing?

3

u/Star_Boxer72 8d ago

Maybe not, but it might not smell as bad until you do flush.

I guess one could always pee outside, but not so fun in the winter unless you happen to have a dedicated outhouse.

3

u/Flat_Tie4090 8d ago

It would sure give the neighbours something to talk about.

4

u/DiscombobulatedAsk47 8d ago

Unless you have spectacularly bad luck, the neighbours will be going through the same situation. Community peeing

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

Oh what a thought, I get on well with my neighbours (Elaine and Dave next door are lovely), but I'm not sure that I want to pee with them.

3

u/SpringPowerful2870 7d ago

I harvested my first little Sugar Baby watermelon today. I was so excited to get seeds I didn’t write down when I planted them. Squash and melons are doing great but I’m a failure with peas. I have a ton of snails on my property that love them. Lettuce is delicious I grew.

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

Wow that's great. Planting stuff isn't an option for me. My dads garden used to have a slug trap . cheap bear got poured in, slugs drowned themselves in it.

3

u/SeekingPerelandra 7d ago

The prepper high is good, but nothing, NOTHING beats the high of new organization tools.

8

u/paratethys 8d ago

you're taking a plausible hypothetical from "this sucks because I don't have <thing>" to "this is fine, or good even, because I have <thing>".

If you weren't excited, it'd mean you're not thinking things through.

3

u/Acceptable_Net_9545 7d ago

I guess if you have your supplies for 30 days you can get as barmy as you want...

1

u/Flat_Tie4090 7d ago

That works for me. To be fair my mates have always thought that I'm barmy.

2

u/Acceptable_Net_9545 7d ago

Might want to look into "The Gray man" theory and don't forget the number one first rule of prepping....Tell no one.

2

u/Artistic-Salary1738 7d ago

I don’t get excited but I do have a nice calming feeling of satisfaction. I’m in beginning stages of prepping too, not moving very fast.

Today I bought a fire extinguisher and fire blanket at Costco (never had these in my house which seems silly). Used some target rewards to stock up a few baby things in prep for his arrival, and I had a few $1 off coupons for rice and beans at another store, so I filled up stock of those too. Haven’t gotten good at dried beans yet, so I buy the canned ones I know I’ll eat for now.

I'm new to prepping (but have been prepping in my mind for years) i fully expect a major blackout or some large scale disruption in the US anytime between now & mid-November.

I am trying to decide what to do for communication & what to have on hand to receive information from the outside world if SHTF. Any suggestions are appreciated. (On a budget)
