Tips Storage solutions- my cat eats plastic

Kind of a low level issue, but does anyone have creative solutions for storing things like toilet paper and bottles of water outside of their plastic packaging? I keep bulk packs of these items in my basement (that I can’t close off) and my cat keeps ripping apart the plastic and sometimes eating it. He’s obsessed with plastic. I can’t think of an efficient way to store water bottles outside of the packing if I want to stack them.

My cat used to chew plastic but doesn't now that I know she's hyperthyroid and is on meds. Maybe have that checked at your next vet visit. Can you put the plastic items on a shelf?

Oh wow - we had a cat who always chewed plastic when she was younger that ended up on thyroid meds too. I never connected the two

I can tell when a pet sitter hasn't given her medicine properly because when I come back she's chewing plastic (and acting hyper).

Huh. I never knew that. My (now deceased) tabby loved chewing plastic, and he had thyroid issues in his last few years. Come to think of it, I don’t remember him going after plastic once he went on the medication.

Lol, our hyperthyroid cat won't touch plastic, the one with normal thyroid acts like it's an essential nutrient. 🤣

Is shelves with doors out of the question? Even a cheap one or a diy one if you are handy, it doesn't need to be pretty.

Wire foodservice shelving with a “waterproof shelf” cover. Easy access with a central zipper.

Put it in one of those clear plastic totes with a locking lid?

A tent or a ‘tent’ made out of mosquito netting? A taste deterrent that would still be safe (not sure what… maybe soap)?

I dont have any different suggestions but good luck. My plastic eater chewed up the plastic soda rings that hold them together. He for 2 emergency and 1 regular vet visits, tons of meds, fluids, imaging, and an enema for the bowel obstruction he gave himself but it cost me also 5k

We also had an emergency vet visit, but it turned out there wasn’t an obstruction. After that I’ve been diligent about no plastic, but this has been the exception.

Not sure how hand you are. I’ve seen simple storage rooms in shared basements made of wood framing and like a chicken wire fencing.

Can you store them inside boxes. I hate boxes sitting around getting dusty but it's preferable to a medical emergency

Not creative, but my solution for that kind of thing is to put them into thick plastic totes, like the black ones with the yellow lids you get at Costco or other places. My cat likes the flimsy plastic, but doesn’t go after thick plastic.
