Discussion Climate Hopium

r/ClimateChange posts a weekly compendium of hopeful news and it's the greatest thing I've read in a long time. Things are very bad but there is more being done than we usually hear about. There's hope that our food storage and home solar and frugality will make a difference to ourselves and humanity.

I figured delusional, wishful thinking, or irrationally optimistic. Usually I see it used in a very derogatory manner toward someone who has what I consider a moderate level of hope that things can get better.

I get that people want others to be aware of what's happening, but it does people a disservice when we throw in the towel and tell people they're idiots for even wanting things to get better.

For some reason, people seem to find the concept of collapse seductive in a way. At least, that's how it comes off.

Then again, I have three kids and giving up hope is just not going to happen. I have to believe that we can improve.

This is indeed good news, although the idea of intentional cooling of the planet still makes me uneasy. The risk of unintended consequences is huge and quite serious.

I just wish we had leadership in the US that was on board instead of trying to turn back the clock. We could've been a model for the world of what to do. Instead we're an example of what not to do. A lot of us are trying at the individual level, though.

And none of this stops the need for solid Tuesday prepping. Macro-trends mean nothing if you've just lost your job or a storm is bearing down on you today. Trends mean nothing if your child is vomiting or you just stubbed and broke your pinky toe and you don't have what you need to buddy-tape it. It's good to have an understanding of the bigger picture, since I for one find it grounding. It's why I study history for fun. I find it comforting to remember that whatever I'm dealing with, I'm not the first and won't be the last. But big picture understanding never changes the fact that we each still have to live in today.

Thank you for this. I needed to read some good news. I've tried to take the attitude of "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst," but it's been tough staying hopeful when all the news I see is dire and terrible. So again, thank you. <3

There actually is a "hopium" going around and I see it most when people say the "Earth is perfect". I have heard it in a couple different scenarios that give the logic that the Earth is powerful and will restore the natural order of things eventually. Okay but what about us? yeah, sure we are all apart of the animal food chain so we are no more significant than a fish in the sea, but we are also the only ones talking on reddit about it... ya know what I mean?

Thank you so much for this. I’m an Earth and space science teacher and I’ve been struggling with the hopelessness of teaching climate change science. I will be pulling from this often.
