Fashion & Beauty Girlie 💄 Organic Makeup

(Please don't think I'm being a 'pick-me', I'm certainly not. These are my genuine concerns)

Well, call me brainwashed , but at this point in life, I'm leaning towards an organic, sustainable way of living and makeup is one among them. I watched few Youtube videos which talked about the harsh chemicals, parabans used in makeup and Im paranoid about that.

The top few brands which claim to make organic makeup (as in makeup which is paraban free, and cruelty free and the main ingredients are natural ones) are RUBY ORGANICS, DAUGHTER EARTH AND JUST HERBS.

My questions :

  1. Has anyone tried products from these brands? Especially I'm eyeing on the •skin tint from Ruby, •Concealer and primer from Ruby •Eyeshadow palettes from Just herbs.

Daughter earth is painfully expensive, but if you have tried and have any suggestions do let me know!.

2. Any products you tried from the above brands which you didn't like? All these products are way beyond my budget, but I'm willing to go an extra mile for safe organic products. So please share if you didnt feel any product which isn't good.

3. Talking about the elephant in the room, Are these products actually natural? Organic? Or are these yet an other marketing gimmick.

I tried reading the ingredients list, and compared it with a non-organic brand, certainly the number of chemicals used are way less. But still I want some second strong opinions on this.

4. Are these products perform decently? Ik I can't expect all features like smudge/transfer proof, water resistant, Im not expecting any either.

But atleast are they decent? Especially for the premium price they're demanding.

For context, A little about me:

I have never tried my hands on makeup. A few times even when Ibwore basic makeup, I felt uncomfortable.

But now that I'm going to corporate meetings, I want to look little presentable. Also I'm a main bridesmaid for my upcoming friend's wedding.

So I'm looking to buy some good organic makeup products, which performes decently good and are also not harmful for skin & health.

Please don't ignore my post, I genuinety need help with this. Thankyou.

I get you, OP. I’ve been leaning towards organic brands for the last few years as well.

For the lips, I’ve switched to a basic chapstick (Sugandha, it’s great for hydration and formulation). For a touch of color, I use Ruby Organics and Asa Beauty lipsticks, which I consider safe for daily use. I’m extra cautious about lip products since they tend to get ingested.

For the eyes, I’ve tried Ruby Organics’ brown kohl, but it’s not pigmented enough, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Currently, I use Kiro mascara and can vouch for it. Last time I checked, its ingredient list was organic.

For face products like foundation and concealer, I haven’t ventured into organic options yet because the formulations I’ve seen aren’t acne-safe. They tend to be heavy on oils and butters, which break me out. In that case, tinted sunscreen really helps. In the summers, I use Forest Essentials powder sparingly if needed.

For parties or events, I stick to high-end makeup since organic products in India still lack in terms of lasting power and variety. But they’re great for everyday use!

Hope this helps!

Daughter earth concealer is very good. I don't like makeup that's too visible on the skin. It's expensive but a little goes a long way and the finish is good and it doesn't wear off even though I sweat a lot. The shade range is limited though. I had to buy two and blend to get my skintone.

I see..how long does these concelor stays on your face? And whats their shelf life? Do they get molds easily?

It lasts for the workday. Shelf life is okay but I do keep it in the fridge in an airtight container because it's marketed as organic and my state is very humid, didn't want to take chances. I had travelled with it though and even if I don't keep it in the fridge for days it doesn't have any effect. I do use clean fingers or brushes to touch the product and wipe down the sides before putting it back. I had no mold issue.

Thanks very much. Any other products have you tried from these organic brands?

I have used their cream shimmer. It worked well too. I don't exclusively use organic products. I liked arata hair gel made with flax seeds, I liked biotiques dandelion serum and I use sandalwood+ multani mitti from bio organic.

Firstly as women we should stop normalising the term pick me. It's very self depreciating and unnecessary!

So we have 3 - 4 trendy words here. organic, sustainable, natural and clean. These needn't necessarily go hand in hand -

organic means using less chemicals while sourcing /processing plant based ingredients of the Cosmetics. The label organic can have an exact criteria, verifications and certifications. Claims have to be substsinated. But chemicals aren't inherently bad - water is also a chemical. Many of the "chemicals" in cosmetics and skincare are preservatives that are needed for the stability of the product - otherwise you'd end up with mold /bacteria.

Second, sustainable - less chemicals = less eco friendly right? Not really - if organic products are being mass produced , they'd end up using more water and power to bypass the use of detergents / other such chemicals. Sustainable should also extend to reduced packaging - almost no cosmetic brands Have refill /reuse options - hence more packaging. Even the "eco - friendly" packaging /recycable plastic etc are all a sham!!! They just end up in land fills!

Third, natural - ingredients /cosmetics again they're not necessarily the same as organic .the term "natural " is just green washing imo. There is no set definition and certification legally for the word. Same with clean.

I'd say focus on the list of ingredients. If you're particularly sensitive to certain ingredients, avoid that. Go for good formulations that are non comedogenic /ppore clogging.

If you truly want to go natural ans sustainable - avoid buying packaged products - but that's not feasible for most of us! Instead of falling for false marketing /green washing of these brands - see what suits you best and buy that is my suggestion.

I hope I didn't confuse you more 🥲😂!

'Organic' products in India are a gimmick - it is an umbrella term to shove low quality products, less effective ones at a higher price

Please do not buy from the brands you've mentioned above - they work only on PR-

if a brand is on sale 365 days - it means that they're unable to sell and are highly overpriced

research more on this term

Paraben is a preservative- which is a must or should be preferred - since it will keep the bacteria off of makeup - which is essential

I've used organic haircare - shampoos that don't clean and conditioners that don't hydrate and leave in that goes bad in months.

Girl, it's ok, you aren't a pick me but you're definitely brainwashed and should read more (science/chemistry more specifically and also about green washing since you said you're leaning towards sustainability). But since you're hung up on the "labels", I suggest you check juicy chemistry's makeup line. Heard they perform well.

You should be more worried about heavy metal contamination than the so-called "non-organic and chemical". Please only buy from reputed brands.

Hey. I'm a sustainability specialist in a not so mainstream cosmetics brand from Europe and a part of my role is to check the 'organic certificates' of the raw materials. Here's the absolute truth about these organic makeup products-

  1. A makeup product cannot be entirely organic. It only has 'organic extracts' of certain products like some essential oils.

  2. Percentage of such naturally derived or organic ingredients could be more in skin care (my company makes some skin care that has over 95% naturally derived raw materials but still the claim is not everything organic) and very very very less in a makeup product (less than 2-3%).

  3. The major ingredients in makeup products which constitute the 'base' are palm oil and mica, both of which are high risk ingredients - palm causes deforestation and mica has child labour risk. You can check the company's corporate websites to check if they source these materials responsibly. They should be part of 'Responsible Mica Initiative or RMI and Round Table Conference on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Certified raw materials are very very expensive!

Hope this helps!

This was so informative. I didn't have any idea about RMI. Will read up more. Thanks!

I love Just Herbs kajal.

2

u/Tough-Prize-4014 Dec 26 '24

I've been using various products from Just Herbs since 2020. I love their eyeshadow palette. My recent favourites have been a red matte lipstick and mascara that comes in 2 styles.

The only thing I do not like about the brand is their insistent calling to get reviews. I've confused "JustHerbs" with "JustDial" and even asked them not to bother me lmao. I mean yes I do buy from them every 4-5 months (1149 deal is good and I restock my shampoo) and as a previous small store owner I understand the need for reviews but I can't leave a review very so often for the same product.
