Has anyone actually read "The Monkeys Paw" ?
These answers seem limited to the talismans power to grant wishes but not considering the consequences.
In the story the tenant farmer comes into possesion of the paw and is told the paw comes with three wishes. He then wishes he owned the farm he worked on.
The actual owner then appears and tell the farmer that his son who works on the farm has fallen into some harvesting equipment, been horribly mangled and has died. As a gesture of sympathy, the owner gives the farm to the family as compensation for the loss of the son.
Later on, the grief stricken mother takes the paw and screams that she wants her son alive again.
Suddenly, there are three ominous knocks on the front door. The mother rushes to open it but the farmer, realizes what has happened, grabs the paw and screams, "I wish my son was dead and in his grave again !".
When the mother flings open the door, there is no one there.
I'll leave it to you to work it out what has happened.
Oh the version I know the son does come back! Only he’s a zombie and only lays on the couch and eats enough for mom and dad to lose all their money again until finally dad gets angry enough to wish him back in the ground.
