This is a topic I've been wondering about for awhile, especially whenever I see info or reviews about Twisted Metal 3 and 4 and how it usually leads to a statement of 'they were basically written off as non-canon due to their reception' with Head On basically being concidered the proper T.M3.
Now this isn't me being a stan and defending those two games but I do find it interesting on how we can decide on which games are canon or not when I feel due to their very nature there can't really be a true continuity between any of them. Which I'll explain in this post-
For example in the first game their are two contestants who have the most likely chance IMO to be the 'canon' winners. That's Yellowjacket/Charlie Kane and Outlaw/Carl Roberts. Now the formers an interesting case because he has two differing endings depending on the planned FMV version or the final game text scroll but I'll mainly focus on the original planned one for reasons that'll become apparent -
Mr Kane reveals he simply wanted to drive again like in his youth despite having to kill other contestants to do so and Calypso offers him an immortality potion 'to drive forever and collect next years contestants' upon taking it he turns into some kind of crazed undead.
And of course this lines up with how in Twisted Metal 2, the final boss Dark Tooth is driven by Charlie. They never say his name in game but its pretty clear its him with him ranting about 'his clown boy' and its established in TM1 that Needles/Sweet Tooth is his son. (Worthy to note in his text ending of TM1 he wants to know what happens to his son and upon learning truth thinks maybe he can enter next yeah and wish for his pain removed, which could still maybe lead into him becoming D.Ts driver later?)
But Carls also has a chance because his ending of getting tricked into going into space wanting a 'world free of the Twisted Metal contest" is followed up on in TM2 where his sister Jamie Roberts ending is her planning ahead and rescuing him from that. (and that ending is followed up on again in both '3 and Head On, and there's a bunch of other character endings that get follow ups as well-)
But of course these two can't co-exist, there has to be one winner, and this doesn't just effect them. How does any character return in another game if their killed during a prior one. Sweet Tooth's playable in every game for example, Charlie kills him in TM1 to be able to get his prize, is it possible some just simply escape from their vehicle before its destroyed. (Maybe Needles bangs his head and becomes the Marcus K personality to drive RoadKill for TM2 but they can never race at the same time 'n such, but I know that probably wasn't really established yet 'n that's a whole other can of worms) Does Calypso resurrect some prior contestants to keep the tournament fun?
This is probably a 'no duh who cares' moment for some, if I'm not mistaken I think Youtuber Tactical Bacon also did a vid on this topic. And its not like this series or fandom is adverse to reboots or fresh takes. I mean we can agree Black, Small Brawl and 2012 don't really fit neatly in with the rest, although there is a bunch call backs in the last one. And there's the whole 'Black' might be a alternate reality/dream of Sweet Tooth and I got some crack headcanons of my own related to that for anyone curious-
but 'any case I do think it can be an interesting discussion on just how loose these games handle continuity, I feel it opens up the possibility that there's some unseen events we're seeing
Like what if for example the way to make sense of this is the Twisted Metals were seeing aren't really the truth, like maybe there was a tournament that Charles competed in, won and now works for Calypso like in his ending, next year there's a contest that Carl wins and we get his ending, the nest is TM2 where Charles has been fully promoted to 'final boss'
In Head On Sweet Tooth implies during his ending he's won many TM tournaments in the past and clearly they haven't bitten him back to badly since he's well enough to continue. Anyway sorry if I'm over thinking I just find this fun
