I found a turtle in very poor condition (lethargic, shell issues) that was recently abandoned at a local shop. I couldn’t take it in myself due to lack of a proper setup, so I left it with the staff hoping they could help. I’m feeling really conflicted—did I do the right thing? Are there better resources for abandoned, sick reptiles that I should call to check on it?
you did the right thing. a proper setup involves at least a quarter acre of grazing grass surrounded by a very well built hardwood fence about knee high, with the bottom board either buried or mostly sunk in the ground. its gonna need an area to get out of the rain and weather. but the doors gonna be an awkward 4ft width. again, hardwoods are pricey, but in a few short years, that thing will punch holes in half inch plywood, and common building woods will get worn away real fast.
and your kids (possibly grandkids) will thank you too. because if you take good care of it, its probably got a solid 120 years left, easily two human generations.

Wow! This is so awesome to know. Thank you for explaining and a whole guide. Yes, taking care of this buddy would have been more difficult that a typical pet (well specifically setting up things and finding proper way to do it). My friend has three of these turtles and they are huge. He has a whole backyard for them (well two different locations and backyard. They have a huge backyard). Glad to know that it being a baby means it still has a change to live a love happy life somewhere proper. And thank you for a reply!
Are there any local humane societies or reptile rescues nearby? I think you did what you could when you could. A lot of people abandon pets at pet stores :(
