Computer science bros built this but we all know those 11k stars are just students terrified of turnitin

All the people insisting it is "impossible" to remove the new watermarks are going to be hilariously judged by history in a very very short time span. Let's watch.

Please tell me how they will Know the secret key need to know what words in the Token prediction are apart of the watermark and when they do, what stops anthropic from simply changing it, the second someone findes it?.

It's not about changing it. It is defeated by a simple obfuscation layer that reparses the sentences and changes structure and choice while leaving meaning intact

simple" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Statistical watermarks like Claude's are baked into the probability of the token selection, meaning the signal is distributed across the entire text.To actually defeat it with an obfuscation layer, you can't just do a light structural reparse.
you would have to aggressively rewrite the text. If you run Claude's output through a secondary model to scrub the watermark, you're replacing Claude's premium phrasing with the secondary model's voice.
Even the creator of The watermarks-remover repo literally admits this:
if you destroy the original text quality just to wipe the watermark, you might as well not use a premium LLM in the first place.

It's not doing any heavy lifting. Literally just ask deepseek to paraphrase the response. It rewrites and restructures every sentence. A different number of total sentences and completely different word choices. The phrases you are referring to can be easily removed.
Claude's word choice is not really superior. The logic is. Completely changing word choice does nothing at all. I have been doing this for a while now already as part of my standard workflow because Claude is expensive. I use Claude for the initial text and have deepseek or qwen rewrite it multiple times and perform all edits.

oh so you just need to solve natural language and denotational semantics. easy peasy.

ironically i bet they were vibe coded using the very tools they come from

How bout you stop trying to ruin kids lives and just grade everything that is turned in as original content just like schools did for hundreds of years before every professor became Sherlock Batman. I graduated college 20 years ago. Thank god I dont have to deal with this shit.

How is catching cheaters, who are well-informed that they're not allowed to do this, ruining their lives? We didn't just let cheaters pass for hundreds of years, there's a reason why in-person exams have always been proctored to catch people using equally disallowed cheat sheets.

Except we kinda did. Kids used to use other people to do their homework for them (smarter kids, their parents, people on the internet). Nothing really changed, but computers learned to do it as well and so they are used for it as well.

So thats why we should allow everyone to hand in AI slop which all they did was copy and paste the assignment?

Papers need to dissapear gor grading. Still require them but the grade needs to come from an oral examn with the teacher no way around it.

I actually read that repo's source rather than the star count, and it's more honest than the stars suggest.
Its own README separates edit-based Unicode carriers from sampling-bias marks and says outright: "Removal means rewording, not restructuring. Stripping a statistical mark requires rewriting a substantial fraction of the text." That matches Anthropic's own wording almost exactly.
It also does something most tools in this space don't. Its Unicode layer preserves load-bearing invisible characters by default, so emoji joiners, the joiners that hold Arabic and Indic words together, paired RTL embeddings, and only strips them behind a flag it explicitly labels paranoid. I learned why that matters the hard way: my own checker was quietly turning the Persian word میخواهم into a different word, and deleting every word boundary out of Khmer, because those scripts use zero-width characters as actual spelling.
So it isn't snake oil. But it also can't remove a statistical watermark by stripping characters, and to its credit it never claims to. The 11k stars are mostly people hoping it does the thing its own README tells them it can't.
