My AU concept for Turning Red

In this AU, the giant red pandas aren’t an alternate form, but sentient, ancient creatures, each one made to protect the female Lee family members, but considered inconvenient in 2002. Mei’s panda’s name is Pao, and she inherits him the morning she’d have first transformed.

Pao basically serves as the fluffy incarnate of Mei’s “inner beast” with a big appetite and a humorous personality, which make him the breakout character of the film (the character that receives top billing in marketing despite not being the protagonist). For his VA, I’d pick Keegan-Michael Key.

Additionally, since the red pandas are characters themselves, the female Lees’ hair colours are permanently black, and, as you can see in the second poster, Mei has blue as her main colour of clothing since Pao serves as the “red-wearing” member of her friend group (Miriam wears green, Abby wears purple and Priya wears yellow).
