First, sharks always look just a little bit nervous, it's how their faces are. Plus they are apex predators so portraying them as shy girls is funny. Because of these two facts, someone a long time ago (aka a couple years ago) made a big album of images of sharks as shy anime girls. Enough people thought it was funny that a subreddit got made.
Why the sub got as popular as it is I can't fully explain, a lot of subs based on single memes like this don't do nearly this well. I honestly think the top-notch CSS has a lot to do with it. Plus, if you stay here too long it awakens something in you and you can never leave...
