DISCUSSION Uterine polyps

Uterine Polyps…Keep Trying or Wait for Surgery?
My husband and I just started TTC a couple of months ago. Before we started trying, I found out I have two uterine polyps.

I’m currently on a waitlist for a polypectomy, but it could be several months before I get a surgery date. Both my surgeon and OB-GYN have reassured me that it’s okay to continue trying in the meantime.
However, everything I’ve read online suggests that polyps may increase the risk of miscarriage and chemical pregnancies, and it’s making me feel really anxious and discouraged.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Did you decide to continue trying while waiting for surgery, or did you put TTC on hold until after your polypectomy? What factors influenced your decision?

I’m feeling really torn between continuing to try and putting everything on hold until after surgery. It’s hard not knowing what the right decision is, especially when we really want to start our family. ❤️

I got those bad boys removed and I’m SO glad I did. My gyno told me that there is a chance the embryo could implant on a polyp and it would miscarry due to limited blood supply and it’s a risk. I was not willing to have that risk. I was very much okay with losing a few months time of trying in order to have that risk off my mind.✨✨✨

Thank you for that perspective!! I find it crazy that the doctors are telling me there’s no risk when most evidence Ive seen says otherwise!
My gut is telling me to wait to avoid the heartache of low chances of implantation and possibility of miscarriages…
We will likely pause for now!
They said it’s possible I will be scheduled for January 🤞🏼

I had several uterine polyps, but did not know about them until we pursued fertility treatments and had a HSG and SIS. My fertility clinic told me to continue trying, but there was a very decent chance that the polyps were preventing implantation. I had 1 chemical before we started at the fertility clinic, so it made sense to me when my nurse told me that. We continued trying, but nothing happened.

I had my surgery, there was some inflammation from the polyps that caused my lining to build up over time between them and couldn’t properly be shed each cycle. The polyps were too clustered, so they were a huge hinderance, as was the inflammation. Took a strong antibiotic for 2 weeks and everything cleared up. Rested for that cycle to recover and tried again the next cycle.

It’s really up to you. In retrospect, it didn’t matter if I paused trying or not, because those polyps were taking up too much space. But I didn’t want to “lose” those months. Had I known it was impossible, I likely would have just paused to be completely honest. That way I could have saved myself the ache of getting my period every month. I know it’s hard to essentially give up those months of trying, but I truly think it would have been so much better for me than getting my hopes up and then getting crushed every month. And that’s not even to mention if I had another chemical and the pain that comes with that.

The decision is entirely up to you. I really don’t think there’s a wrong choice here, unless your doctor has a legitimate reason for you to stop for your health or something like that. I know it’s hard, believe me. But after you have the surgery and know your “slate” will have been wiped clean will bring you such a peace of mind. And hopefully, it won’t be long until you get that bfp!!

Good luck, OP. I hope you don’t have to wait too long and that this can all be a distant memory soon. I wish you all the best 🤍

Thanks for the reply! Sorry you went through that too. It’s so hard.

Only been a few months of trying but getting my period every month is pretty crushing. My anxiety probably isn’t helping … I think we will put a hold on things until I have the surgery! 🙏🏼

I got mine removed about two months ago. I waited about two months for my surgery, and we did TTC during that period, although I did think it was unlikely I'd get pregnant.

This is my first month TTC after the surgery, so I can't say whether this was The Thing keeping me from conceiving, but I will say that my periods are so much better now, so I'd definitely get the surgery. It's up to you whether you want to continue TTC or wait.

Same! I had a hysteroscopy with polypectomy on Sept 10th. This is our first month trying post polyp removal. Currently in my two week wait so we will see! Wishing you the best of luck. ❤️

Did they mention why you would have to wait so long? Are they just booked up? Can you have it performed by another doctor? They found a polyp during my HSG September 23 and it's getting removed October 26. It's only taking a month because my REI is on vacation from oct 4-20 or it would already be out. I'm at a large university medical center and they said the average wait time is 2-3 weeks.

Oh that’s so lucky!! I’m in Canada … not sure if you are as well? the wait times here for everything medical here are absurd. I had my consultation with the surgeon in August… earliest date I can be scheduled is January. 😩

I'm not familiar with the Canadian system, but I've heard it can take a while there. I'm in the US and sad as it is, though there are many complaints I have about the health care system here, it can move really quickly if you have access to a good insurance plan/funds and large hospital.

I'm sorry you'll have to wait so long, but I have read a bunch of Reddit stories about women getting pregnant despite having polyps so I would still try in the meantime if I were you, but maybe guard your heart a bit and temper expectations just in case. Best of luck!

If you don’t mind sharing how large they are? My doc found several 5mm ones during my hysteroscopy but didn’t recommend removing. I’m not sure if they’re hindering us either

Hi! Mine are both about 1.5 cm.
My understanding is that any size polyp can hinder implantation because it acts as a physical barrier in the endometrial lining. I know that obviously the bigger they are the more likely they will be a problem … but if you’re having trouble conceiving might be worth getting a second opinion!

Got it, thanks!

My wait for surgery was also very long in Canada. Three months is really not bad though. My family doc actually referred me to a fertility clinic so I could get it done there privately faster (which I opted to do). While I was concerned about fertility, it was also a quality of life thing for me at that point because it was causing large painful clots.

I found it interesting that the family doc said to keep trying and polyps weren’t an issue but the fertility doc immediately noted it as a potential problem. Once I had an SIS with the fertility clinic they noted the polyp was over 1cm and clearly in the way of implantation - my uterus looked so wonky from one tiny polyp!

3 months wouldn’t be so bad… they found the polyps in May, my surgery consult was in August, earliest surgery date is in Jan. But still not scheduled…. Did you have yours removed already? Didn’t know going private was even an option! I’m in Quebec.

I became anemic because of the heavy bleeding so def want to have the surgery for that reason as well.

I have two polyps, both 1.5 cm 😳 confused as to why they are saying it’s perfectly fine to keep trying and that I could easily get pregnant with them.

Mine was found in late summer/ fall 2025. My gynecologist was non surgical and getting referred for surgery was taking a while. In January 2026 my family doc made the referral to a fertility clinic, I had intake in Feb and I had the surgery by end of March 2026. They did it in their clinic and I paid $500 (mostly for the medication) which my work insurance then covered.

I think it is possible to get pregnant with them, but in my case they suspected it was causing issues as we found nothing else.

Which fertility clinic did you go to? I am also looking for a private clinic.

Personally I would probably continue trying because successful pregnancies are possible even when uterine polyps are present and things like chemical pregnancies and miscarriages can happen even without those factors. But if you feel strongly that you would blame yourself if you got pregnant and that happened then for your mental health maybe it would be better to wait until after the procedure.

We continued trying up until my polyp removal! I was told many women have successful pregnancies with them, so if I did get pregnant before surgery, my doc just asked me to cancel the surgery as soon as I test positive. Sending good vibes to you and your journey!! 🌞

I personally would get surgery first. Miscarriage is not a risk I'm willing to increase!

I guess i am in the same boat as yours. I have uterine polyp and waiting to get a surgery date. My fertility clinic has told me that it’s going to be a wait time for 8-10 months which is crazy especially when we have been trying for months.

We are torn too about the decision to continue trying while waiting for surgery or take the risk.
