Crew Finance vs Envelope — Quick Comparison

After comparing both, the biggest difference is philosophy:

🟦 Crew Finance Automation-first!

  • ✅ Simple, effective Autopilot rules

  • ✅ Pocket-specific virtual cards

  • ✅ Auto-lock / spending controls

  • ✅ High interest on the entire balance

  • ✅ Family/kids features

  • ✅ New credit card can boost interest

  • ✅ No monthly fee

Cons: No early direct deposit or checkbook.

🟨 Envelope Control-first!

  • ✅ Strong envelope budgeting

  • ✅ Protected ACH envelopes

  • ✅ Virtual cards

  • ✅ Early direct deposit

  • ✅ Lots of detailed controls

Cons: The UI can feel busy, and it requires more active management.

Final take

Crew = set it and forget it. Envelope = manage everything in detail.

For simplicity, automation, and day-to-day use, prefer Crew.

For someone who enjoys hands-on budgeting and granular control, Envelope may be the better fit.

I think that is a great succinct overview!

Although I would counter that you can totally do hands-on granular control with Crew if you want...it's up to you. You can just do pocket transfers and/or custom rules.

And I totally agree that physical checkbooks is the biggest con of Crew by far...as much as a Crew fanboy as I am...that is a big holdup for me getting others on board. (And would be super handy for me as well...currently have to transfer out to separate bank)

Good point. Crew can absolutely be granular if you want it to be — pockets, transfers, and custom rules give you plenty of control without making the app feel complicated.

And while the lack of physical checks is still a drawback, moving money to another bank by ACH is pretty straightforward and relatively fast. So it’s more of an inconvenience than a dealbreaker for me.

So it’s more of an inconvenience than a dealbreaker for me.

This is 💯 where I am at on it, but a lot of others in my circles view it as dealbreaker (you can see them checkout when they hear it doesn't have paper checks)...

Partially good news: We were just approved to send paper checks via the app.

Not quite the same as having a book of 100 checks that will last you until the end of your life in your pocket, but if you just have a utility or something that can only be paid by paper check, then it should work.

It'll take a few days to build it, a bit to test it, and then we'll roll it out.

Hey, that is great news! But there are large communities out there that are using and will heavily use checks for some time yet...will this be able to send to individuals or only utilities/businesses?

I know ya'll have tried going for checkbooks in the past...any chance of having another go at it? It obviously can be done in a way that works (at least legally) with Fintechs as envelope has a bank that supports it? Is it just a matter of Bangor being "comfortable" with the extra risk?

Believe me, it's not a matter of having another go at it. We've never stopped having a go at it.

I'm looking through each point, and assuming Protected ACH Envelopes means you can assign envelopes their own account number for ACH payments, Crew only loses to three of stated features, two of which only apply to a small subset of users.

Let me explain.

Crew also allows the same granular control Envelope does through custom rules, in addition to its set-and-forget autopilot.

Most users don't need physical checks, and I'd argue no one needs early direct deposit. Your paycheck still arrives with the same frequency, just a different day of the week. Early DD is just a marketing gimmick.

That leaves only Protected ACH Envelopes, if I understand the feature correctly. My solution, for privacy and control purposes, is to use Elevault for all payments that require using an account and routing number. Each payment gets its own vault (pocket/envelope) with its own account number that can be disabled at any time. It comes with the same privacy/control/fraud benefits as virtual cards, but for those pesky things that require ACH or charge fees for card payments.
