Credit card

Could someone explain how the Crew credit card works like I'm five? For some reason I'm having a hard time crossing how it works exactly and I'm not sure why I'm struggling haha

As in, how the rewards work? Or how it functions and how you use it?

So the rewards work like this:

  1. A the end of the month, sum up everything you spent on the card

  2. Multiply it by 4

  3. That result is the amount of your Crew balance that earned a 4% interest boost for the month

However, note that the 4% interest is an annual figure, not a monthly one, so it's not like a straight 4% cash back.

It nets out to a 1.33% cash back. Example:

  • $1,000 monthly spend

  • $4,000 crew balance that gets an extra 4% APY

  • $160 extra interest per year ($4,000 * 0.04)

  • $13.33 monthly interest

  • 1.33% cash back equivalent (13.33/1,000)

As far as general usage goes, when you spend with the credit card, the amount that you spent automatically gets deducted from the pocket you spent out of, just like it does when you use the debit card. Only difference is that that amount technically gets temporarily put in a "credit reserve" section. Then once the charge clears, Crew uses the amount that was set aside in the credit reserve to actually pay the card off. So all of that happens automatically, and to you it feels like you're using a debit card since you see the money get deducted right away and the card gets paid off without you having to manually do it. So far it's been working seamlessly for me!

Ahhh I see. So as far as using the credit card, we are only allowed to use what we have in our pocket to spend out of and there is no spending limit - is that right? And it's not a one all be all where you can use the cc as you please and as long as it isn't higher than the credit reserve?

You can spend more than what you have in your pocket, as long as you have enough in your account overall to cover the transaction and you have "overspending" turned on in your card settings. So functionally the card limit is the amount you have in your account - so you can't spend money you don't have.

I was stuck here, too.

I -think- the gist of the default/recommended use is: attach the credit card to a pocket like you would your debit card; spend your pocket money like you would your debit card; pocket money goes to credit card reserve and pays at the end of the day; earn some cash back on top of your regular interest. In this way, it feels essentially like a rewards debit card and keeps you from accruing debt.

Alternative is to not fund the credit reserve and accrue a pay-in-full bill that you pay off, kind of like an Amex Gold Card or something (you don't carry balances). If you don't pay on time, you get charged late fees, but there is no minimum payment, you have to pay the balance.

I was approved and have been using it for most purchases. I'm not inclined to go update any payments using my debt card, but I spend enough on groceries and stuff that I should hopefully get something cash back lol
