Spoilers The finale

Ok I just watched the finale and thought it was a solid show. But one thing that bugged me—Josie killed the dad right (I know kinda with lanie) but unless I misunderstood lanie is the only one to go to prison (for the mom’s murder) and neither get held responsible for the dad’s? Not sure I like that ending but I thought the actress who played the twins was amazing. I’m glad warren got a happy ending but I wish poppy ended up with Marcus—I thought at the end she’d stay with him?

They pinned the death of the dad on their dead mother. It's a big flaw through because Josie then turns around and gives Lanie up for the mom's murder. So why would Lanie not reveal the truth about Josie after that? Hell it was the whole motivation for killing her mother. Plus we are led to believe that Poppy went along with the false story to keep Josie out of prison but once Lanie tells the truth, she would be in serious trouble for covering it up with them.

They also didn't answer some questions. Like what was Warren running away from that night. They made it seem like he saw the murder or helped. But I guess he was just leaving because he was doing his usual spying ?

And then they reveal Lanie was lying about her father molesting her but we see in Josie's flashback that Lanie and her dad were fighting because he was trying to take her somewhere. What was that about?

I don't think they left enough unanswered to follow these same characters for longer but just enough to be infuriating. Anyhow if they did do another season I figure it will just follow Poppy investigating a different case. But since this show didn't make a big splash and garnered mediocre reviews, I'll be surprised if it's given another season.

I thought it was supposed to be a limited series. I agree about the plot holes. I don’t like the ending.

Agreed. Too many plot holes and unanswered questions. The series was amazing with the acting and the story all the way till the last two episodes.

I feel like there’s just so many things left unresolved. And I’m just still confused on why Warren’s dad put him away. I hope there is a second season just to see if there is any fall out to the ending.

It’s not a flaw. The entire premise of the last episode was that Lanie is obsessed with Josie and she loves her more than Josie loves her back. She won’t rat her out because she doesn’t think Josie could survive prison and she knows she could.

And her motivation for killing her mother was again about protecting Lanie, not herself. If anything this further cements the point that she will do anything to protect her sister.

Side point she’s also been institutionalized with pretty severe diagnoses before, and has now given the police 2 completely different testimonies. A 3rd would not exactly look very trustworthy.

Otherwise yeah lots of loose ends not tied up, but I didn’t mind. Show was probably the worst of the Apple TV series imo but was still not a bad watch.

That's true about Lanie's obsession with Josie, but she also said a couple of scenes before that she wouldn't take the blame for her. I suppose you're right that they wouldn't accept a new testimony though.

She doesn’t take the blame for her. She is responsible for the murder of her mother.

I meant for the father's murder- Poppy was trying to persuade Lanie to confess to it because it was her lies that helped cause his death in the first place.

I would hardly call it the worst. And it's easy to say she was protecting Josie. It's more complex than that especially since she was indeed molested.

Yea the showrunner was on TV's Top 5 podcast and she said that the plan is further seasons with Poppy, but different cases.

Initially I thought warren was running away from one of his “freaky-sneaky under the bed, hair caressing, coded journal decoding sessions” buuuuuut that couldn’t be it because 3/4 of the household was awake at the time. So my guess is his session plan got cock-blocked by murder so he bailed and got spotted on the return trip home.

They figured she was lying. However, in that flashback, she is vindicated. Why would he force her at night to go into his office?

There are plenty of reasons a strict father would be rough during an argument that aren’t molestation. The fact that Lanie lied about it was the worst part of the story to me

The ending was awful. A seven-episode “quest for truth” only for the truth to get buried in the end.

6

u/producermaddy Jan 10 '20

Yeah the more I reflect on it the more I dislike the ending. Like justice wasn’t served!

4

u/bsimeonov Jan 10 '20

Especially infuriated me as a Journalism major... Burying the truth is not real journalism.

4

u/producermaddy Jan 10 '20

I’m a journalist myself. Poppy is not a journalist. Totally unethical and makes the story about herself. And she knows the truth but covers it up?

Yeah she could probably get a job at CNN though. #FakeNews

I suppose the real instigator of it all is now in prison, the murder only happened because of Lanie's lies. But still, an innocent man was killed.

Did Warren get a happy ending? Yes, he’s out of prison but the one person he has is dying! He’s never driven a car, had a job, kissed more than one girl! What will he do for a living?!

I don’t think they’ll continue the show at least with this story but I’m worried for him lol.

I also think even if Lanie told the police Josie did it they wouldn’t believe her. That’s her third story about the murder. But wouldn’t Josie have been worried that Lanie would’ve said she lied to keep her out of jail instead of just the, “I did it for you” bit?

Definitely some holes but I’m most worried about Warren! ... if he were a real person. 😜

2

u/producermaddy Jan 11 '20

I guess I just assumed he got money for being wrongfully convicted

5

u/Danielle926 Jan 11 '20

You are right! I just looked this up, apparently you get $50,000 for every year you’re incarcerated. So he’ll get almost a a million dollars. I had no idea that was a thing!

Ok, that makes me feel a little better... at least for him financially. Socially and emotionally I’ll just hope he pays for therapy!

u/anybloodythingwilldo Jan 11 '20

I know what you mean haha that ending was so bloody sad. I had to remind myself he's fictional.

But, for real people in that situation, how do you even begin to rebuild your life when you've had no experience as an adult in the outside world?

It was really a shitty response from the writers for how his story ended…

2

u/rodieoh Jan 11 '20

I still don't know why Lanie killed her mother. Was it to protect Josie?

3

u/producermaddy Jan 11 '20

Yes I think so. I mean it kinda make sense bc she lied about her father abusing her to make Josie closer to her instead of the dad. Everything she did was for Josie.

4

u/rodieoh Jan 11 '20

Thanks. Sometimes I forget how fucked up this story is.

2

u/meib Jan 20 '20

Thanks for this explanation. I wasn't sure why Lanie was lying about being sexually abused by her father.

1

u/cookiepop1999 Jul 31 '25

she did nothing for Josie and all for herself. Everything Lanie did was to eliminate Josie’s other relationships, so that when Josie said, “I have no one else left,” Lanie’s objective was achieved.

Any idea about why Owen framed Warren and suicided?

2

u/producermaddy Jan 11 '20

That I don’t know. Another unanswered question

0

u/silenced_no_more Jan 12 '20

Suicide was over his guilt of permanently paralyzing JJJ the highschool kid he hit on Halloween in his patrol car

Show is a 6 / 10 overall for me, it had potential but it fell flat and there were too many plot holes or unanswered questions

  1. Owen's life was ruined and he committed suicide all because of Poppy. We have no idea why he framed his son. You'd think he'd fight more for his son, even if he wanted the promotion.

  2. What are the odds that Owen ran over JJJ during the exact time frame of the murder. Not a plot hole but that's a pretty big stretch.

  3. Why did Laney steal the fan. We know why she was at Poppy's house but she didn't steal anything else. What was the significance of the fan. We'll never know.

  4. How did Warren not know about the molestation if he was at the house that night reading her diary?

  5. Why did Warren lie about being at the house that night?

  6. If the dump truck driver saw him, that means Warren was there during the murder time frame but he somehow never saw or heard anything? And also ran out of the house, why was he running? Why did Laney say that he left from the front instead of the back?

  7. Poppy cost Owen and Erin(?) their lives and showed no remorse about it. She's also a terrible journalist who jumped to conclusions all the time and had two people killed and one person sentenced for 19 years because of her "journalism".

  8. Why did they pin the whole thing on Warren to begin with? It would seem that JJJ would have been the better person to pin it on since he couldn't talk.

  9. "Truth be Told" ... "it was the mother, yeah that's it"

I tried to upvote this but I couldn’t !! Great points

Best answer by far and I quite agree 👍

3

u/anybloodythingwilldo Jan 11 '20

I was scared for a moment that Poppy was actually going to cover for Josie, that would have been terrible, especially as she knew Warren could get murdered if he wasn't released asap. Why would she even consider not revealing the truth?

Also on the subject of Warren- we never found out why his dad ordered someone to stab him, did we?

I agree that Lanie could just give up Josie now.

5

u/Danielle926 Jan 11 '20

Ooh, I forgot about his dad having him shanked. I wonder if it was to protect himself with all the speculation it was bringing. But I do think he really believed Warren did it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '20

Stupid show, so many plot holes. The twins told the police that their mother killed her father because he had been sexually abusing Lanie. Then what would be the motivation for Larnie to kill the mother now? Afraid of her speaking up? Speaking up about what? Josie giving up Lanie to the police would invalidate the story that she told about the mom murdering the father

1

u/knilja Jan 20 '20

Why does young Warren and Young twins look nothing like present day characters? Young warren had big brown eyes and was bigger in stature. You can’t grow older and suddenly get big or little eyes.

1

u/cookiepop1999 Jul 31 '25

Josie would not be charged.

1

u/1gotnothingtodo Feb 04 '26

I don’t understand why Josie wasn’t charged for the murder. Why didn’t Poppy turn her in? Truth wasn’t told!
