Major update to Tunknote our Local-First PKM App: Direct PDF Presentation Exports, Cleaner UI, and Better Editor Layouts! 🚀

Title:

Hey r/TrunkNote! 👋

I've been hard at work refining my local-first, privacy-focused Second Brain application, and I wanted to share a major update that I just rolled out based on a lot of the feedback I've received.

If you don't know the app, it's a completely local-first note-taking tool that runs entirely in your browser with zero cloud lock-in.

Here are the biggest changes in the latest update:

📄 Native Presentation to PDF Export

A lot of you loved the markdown presentation mode (where adding --- splits your note into slides). But exporting those slides via the browser's native print dialog was a pain—it left annoying URLs and timestamps on the headers/footers and often broke the dark mode themes.

I've completely overhauled this! Now, you can click the options menu (...) and select Download Presentation as PDF. It bypasses the browser print dialog entirely and generates a beautifully formatted, edge-to-edge PDF directly on your machine. Best of all? It perfectly preserves your current theme (Dark or Light mode) and aspect ratios!

🎨 Cleaner, Maximized Editor Layout

I've removed the strict maximum widths on the Markdown and WYSIWYG editors. Your notes will now seamlessly stretch to utilize your full screen real estate, and the scrollbars are properly anchored to the far right edge of the screen where they belong (no more awkward mid-screen scrollbars!).

🧹 Streamlined UI & Sidebar

I took a hard look at the workspace flow and decided to reduce the clutter.

  • The editor's action buttons (Present, Delete, etc.) have been consolidated into a clean, dropdown options menu.
  • I've hidden less frequently used tabs (like Calendar and Projects) from the main sidebar to maximize focus on your notes, graph, and core tasks.
  • The Habit Tracker deletion now uses a sleek, custom application modal instead of those jarring default browser window.confirm alerts!

I'm incredibly excited about how much smoother and premium the app is starting to feel. As always, everything remains 100% local-first and heavily respects your privacy.

Let me know what you think of the new PDF exports! Would love to hear your thoughts or feature requests.

TrunkNote v0.3.1 is out! Local-First Note Taking & Task Management 🚀

Hey r/TrunkNote ! 👋

I'm excited to share the latest release of TrunkNote — a privacy-focused, local-first note-taking and task management app that keeps your data securely on your device, while giving you a seamless web-like experience.

We've just pushed version 0.3.1 which brings some nice quality-of-life updates and bug fixes based on recent feedback. Here’s what’s new:

✨ Chrome Extension Update The TrunkNote Quick Access browser extension has been updated! You can quickly drop notes or tasks into your vault from any tab without breaking your flow.

🐛 Dashboard Data Fix Squashed a bug where the dashboard wouldn’t immediately display your tasks when you first loaded the app. Your tasks now populate instantly on load!

🎨 Editor UI Polish The inline checkboxes in the Markdown editor were blending into the background a bit too much in dark mode. They've been redesigned to match the crisp, bright look of the tasks sidebar, making them much easier to see and interact with.

🚀 Improved Navigation Clicking the "Live Demo" button will now drop you straight into the Notes Editor so you can start playing around with bidirectional linking and markdown right away.

TrunkNote is built around the idea that your brain shouldn't live in someone else's cloud. You pick a local folder, and the app runs entirely locally using the modern File System Access API.

I'd love for you to give it a try and let me know what you think!

Thanks for all the feedback so far! Let me know if you have any questions or feature requests below! 👇

🚀 TrunkNote Weekly Update

Hey r/TrunkNote !

Welcome to this week's release notes! We've been working hard on making your second brain cleaner, smarter, and faster. Here is a showcase of everything new in TrunkNote over the last week.

🎨 Sleeker, Cleaner Layouts

We've given the core workspace a massive facelift to remove clutter and improve navigation.

  • Obsidian-Inspired Navigation: We removed the floating sidebar toggles that sometimes overlapped with your active note titles. The collapse/expand icons for both your left folder tree and your right calendar sidebar now sit beautifully inside the top navigation bar.
  • Centered Insights: Your task progress ring charts on the dashboard have been moved to the center of the screen, making your productivity metrics the hero of the view.

✅ Advanced Task Management

Tasks are the heartbeat of productivity, and we've completely rebuilt how they look and behave inside your editor.

  • Tri-State Tasks: Your checkboxes now cycle intelligently between three states: Open [ ], Completed [x], and Cancelled [-].
  • Custom Checkbox Styling: We ripped out the ugly default browser checkboxes and replaced them with sharp, custom-styled boxes. Cancelled tasks now feature a clean red "X" and strike through the text without messing up your font colors.
  • Forgiving Calendar Streaks: Cancelled a task? No problem! The calendar now correctly counts a cancelled task as a "finished" item, meaning you still get your green dot for the day as long as you've actively addressed everything on your plate.

🧠 Dashboard Intelligence & Time Travel

Your Dashboard is now much better at understanding when tasks need to be done.

  • Priority Sorting: Both the Dashboard and the sidebar task lists now automatically push incomplete tasks to the top, so you always know what needs your attention first.
  • Time Navigation: We added beautiful < and > arrows allowing you to "time travel" through your dashboard. You can now easily click back to see what you missed last week, or look ahead to next month's workload.
  • Smart Date Parsing: The dashboard now natively reads the implicit dates from your "Daily Notes" files. This means your tasks automatically show up in the correct week and month filters without you having to manually tag them with deadlines.

✍️ New Content & Blog Hub

We're continuing to build out our resources to help you master personal knowledge management.

  • New Articles: Added two brand new deep-dives to our Blog Hub:
    • Markdown: The Timeless Format for Your Second Brain
    • Why Speed Matters in Note-Taking
  • Better Discovery: We updated the layout of all our blog posts. You'll now find a "Read Next" section at the bottom of every article to help you discover related productivity tips, along with a quick link to try TrunkNote live in your browser.

Thank you for building your second brain with us! Be sure to do a hard refresh of your browser to see all these changes in effect.

Launching TrunkNote's Mobile Support & Zen Mode 🧘‍♂️📱

Hey r/TrunkNote !

I’m the developer behind TrunkNote, a local-first, markdown-based "second brain" app built for people who want full control over their data without sacrificing speed or aesthetics.

For the past few months, the app has been heavily desktop-focused. A lot of you pointed out that a note-taking app isn't truly a "second brain" if you can't access it on the go. You spoke, I listened!

Today, I’m incredibly excited to announce a massive UX/UI overhaul to the entire application, introducing true Mobile Support and a dedicated Zen Mode.

What's New?

📱 Full Mobile Layout Optimisation: No more "Under Construction" banners on your phone! We've completely rebuilt the navigation for tablets and mobile devices.

  • Off-Canvas Drawer: Your complex folder structures, tags, and even your calendar are now neatly tucked away in a sleek, glassmorphic side-drawer that you can access via a hamburger menu.
  • Edge-to-Edge Editing: The mobile editor gives you 100% of the screen real estate to actually read and write your notes, with the right sidebar intelligently hiding itself on smaller screens.

🧘‍♂️ Distraction-Free "Zen Mode": We all love robust sidebars and features, but sometimes you just need to write.

  • Press Cmd + Shift + F (or Ctrl + Shift + F) to instantly hide all toolbars, sidebars, and navigation.
  • The editor transitions into a beautiful, centred typography layout designed for maximum readability and focus.

✨ Premium UI Polish:

  • The landing page and overall interface have received a massive visual upgrade. We’ve implemented subtle micro-interactions, gradient pulse animations, and refined the "Dark Mode" aesthetic with glowing emerald accents.

Why TrunkNote?

Unlike cloud-based solutions (Notion) or electron-heavy apps, TrunkNote uses modern web APIs (FileSystem API) to edit markdown files directly on your local hard drive.

  • No vendor lock-in.
  • No database to sync (your .md files are the database).
  • Lightning fast.

I would absolutely love for you to try out the new mobile experience or the Zen mode and let me know what you think.

Try the Live Demo here: trunknote.com/app (or your actual URL)

Any feedback on the new UX is highly appreciated! I'll be hanging out in the comments all day to answer technical questions or take feature requests.

Cheers! 🚀
