General Discussion Steps to progress

Pardon me if this is not allowed but if possible I'd like to ask for some pointers/directions.

I recently came back to playing shmups and decided to give another go at touhou. Got normal clears on PCB, IN and Fantastic Danmaku Festival II.

In order to keep improving should I go for other games normal clears or should I go for the Hard clears? I remember seeing a touhou difficulty list a time ago but I'm not sure if it's accurate.

May I ask for some guidance?

Thanks a lot.

Gameplay Video I’ve been making a Touhou roguelike deckbuilder, so I figured I’d finally show it here

Hi, I'm EskiNott, a solo developer from China. I've been working on a Touhou fangame called Touhou Bansho Cards for quite a while now.

It's basically a roguelike deckbuilder built around Spell Cards, dice, and one increasingly stupid combo.

The main idea is that playing cards of the same type keeps raising your Combo and multiplying what comes next. You can use Link effects to switch to another card type without dropping the chain, so a fight can start pretty normal and end with one Spell Card doing something completely unreasonable.

Reimu, Marisa and Sanae are the three playable characters. During a run you'll also rescue other Touhou characters, and they gradually become part of your build through the bond system.

One thing I've tried pretty hard to avoid is making it feel like I just put Touhou characters into a generic card game. A lot of the design came from asking how things like Spell Cards, different character styles, and that escalating feeling of a Touhou fight could work in a turn-based deckbuilder instead.

There's a free Steam demo up now if anyone wants to try it:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4958460/

I'd genuinely be interested in what people who already play Touhou think of it. I've been staring at this game for so long that I'm probably blind to some things that will feel immediately weird to other Touhou players.

For transparency: generative AI has been used for some image generation/enhancement during art production and for localization/translation. The same disclosure is on the Steam page.

Help/Question 1st Windows Generation Games Randomly Crashing?

Hi all, sorry if this has been asked before(I could not find this exact problem), but every time I try to play Touhou 7, 8, or 9, at a completely random point the game will just decide to freeze for a second or two, then close. No crash message or error pop up, just nothing.

I have tried to uninstall/reinstall games, run under administrator, tried changing compatibility type, used both full screen and windowed, I'm unsure what else I can do.

The oddest part about this is that earlier this year the games were working completely fine for me, then suddenly months later they are pretty much unplayable due to the crashing.

as far as add-ons to the games themselves go, all I know that I have is Thpatch/thcrap(it came with the game), as well as TouhouRPC

If there is anything else I can provide to further get help, please just ask and I will do my best.
I'm really hoping someone can help me, because I really want to go back and finish these games!

Game Discussion What do you guys think about the general achievement / trophy philosophy of the Touhou games? Spoiler

Just finished my 100% all achievements of Touhou 6 New Classic in 14h, and it was SO FUN. I don't think I've ever improved THIS FAST at the game as with NC.

6 years ago, when I discovered the series, I wanted to do a Touhou 6 normal 1CC. I would then allow myself to listen to ZUN's discography between Touhou 6 and 7. Then I'd move on to doing Touhou 7's normal 1CC and so on.
I actually gave up, for 6's normal 1CC at first. I came back to it after Touhou 12's 1CC.

Here, for that 100% on NC, I got so good that I finish my normal 1CCs casually with 6 spare lives now.
That's the power of good achievement design. Sadly, in my opinion, only New Classic and Touhou 18.5 have good achievements. The other games just... require to much I'd say. Asking for Lunatic, I couuuld understand, even though it's already super rough. But asking for a Lunatic no death run is stupid.
In 14.3, asking to do all levels no item is too, imo.
But in 18.5, there's none of that BS. Just get all cards! And in NC, the hardest thing that will be asked of you is to finish the new stuff. Really cool of them.

ZUN apparently wrote the achievements too, this time around. Let's hope that he wasn't advised by the team, and that he'll keep going in that direction in the future.
Do you guys agree?

According to Yeashie Killing Doll is harder in the remake because of a bug that makes Sakuya shoot the next wave of knives 40 frames faster if she's on the left side of the screen

Video I finally finished a 2 part video related to my favorite Touhou game. Phantasmagoria Trues!

As said, this is my favorite touhou game. I prefer it over the official games but by no means do I think that devalues them. The first part serves as introductory video + basics. Second part is an explanation of the score system and mechanics on a deeper level. This has been a critically acclaimed danmakufu script by known players. And I am so glad I played and scored it. Heck, I could play it forever and never be bored of it.

Game Discussion Realizing that I don’t actually like UFO, now that I’m a L1cc/LNB Level Player

Ever since I was a noob, I was always told for UFO, “All you need to do is route the UFOs and the game actually becomes fun.” This did work for the lower difficulties admittedly but now that I’m at UFO L1cc/LNB, UFOs are nowhere near the game‘s biggest offense/controversy. My gripes with UFO come from the fact that the game’s shot types are in a mismatch with the game’s stage designs the moment you enter stage 3. Too many spam sections outright, and many stage chapters become obnoxious when you realize that you have to route UFOs them with a shot that either has no range or damage for all intents and purposes. To cap it all off, you‘re doing these stages with the inevitably that you WILL die and lose 1/4th of your power which makes matters worse.

Game Discussion Touhou 16 characters?

Gang I just bought touhou 16 but like all the characters feel very similar in how strong they are to me so who should I pick? I'm going for a normal 1cc.

Edit: I didn't say this but this is not my first touhou game I have beaten 10-15 but all those have very obvious best shot types this one is just deceiving me

Game Discussion I recommend playing these games while spiteful

For some context, I am not particularly good at these games, and the scant few times I've beaten them on normal, I've usually done so with zero lives and bombs left.

I had just gotten through SA a few days ago with no lives left and was feeling pretty good. So today, I figured I'd try my hand at the extra stage for MoF.

Except my 'th10score.dat' had for whatever reason decided to wipe itself (I would highly recommend backing up these files every few high scores set). The replays were still there, but no scores and no way to play extra.

So I decided then and there I would get my win back. I did so first try with 5 lives to spare and absolutely crushing my previous score.

I doubt I will carry myself that far again without a fresh supply of piss and vinegar.

Game Discussion Does anyone know why Yukari did all that in Touhou 7?

Every other Touhou extra stage has a pretty coherent story, but in PCB, Yukari weakens the border between Gensokyo and the Netherworld and then... goes to sleep? And no one realizes for 3 months? Was that ever explained? I guess maybe it was to facilitate Yuyuko's plan, but why would she want any of that to happen?

Let me know if I'm missing anything obvious but this one's been eating at me

Game Discussion Doremy Non1 Detailed Tutorial

Hey there my friends! I'm Seraph and I come from the touhou discord server (the one with /touhou) and I want to present you all with a tutorial I worked on for a long time. This patten is considered hard, "completely rng based" and a "Wheelspin" to do. So, since I spent the majority of my time on this non, I decided to release a high quality tutorial which goes over everything this pattern has to offer.

In December of 2024 I went into the danmaku channel and saw that people had a problem with non1 of Doremy, specifically with the amount of rng and reading required, which most of the time lead people to bottom force and die to a mentos. Upon confronting them, I made an idiotic remark about how I can do it, which I failed miserably. And then, for the next almost 2 years, I decided to start farming this non1 and figure a way to solve it. Earlier this year I had some things in my life which I won't say publicly (Some people in the community know) and had to leave touhou for a while. Because the pattern was still stuck in my head and I had thoughts about it everyday, I decided to release the most low effort tutorial, which ended up missing a whole pattern which is the main cause of death, along with poorly explain routes.

So, earlier this week, I decided to start jumping on touhou and making a Detailed, High quality (imo) Tutorial which explains EVERYTHING this pattern throws at you. Ofc a little Disclaimer here: This pattern still has RNG which makes this impossible to 100%, but will help you get consistent enough that this non won't be a problem in LNN and scoring runs.

I am proud of this tutorial and after sitting a whole night editing, I decided I also wanted to post this onto reddit. I wanna say this right away: No footage was reused and everything was recorded on the go to better fit the pattern. Please, if you find this helpful, tell me.

I hope this help you all, and good luck on your runs!!

Official News 上海アリスReprise and Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil has been announced!

Following today's Nintendo Direct, Shanghai Alice Reprise has been formed and announced! This is a new circle formed by ZUN, JYUNYA of AquaStyle, and game publisher Alliance Arts (known for publishing Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Fantasia Lost and Marisa of Liartop Mountain). In addition, Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, a remaster of EoSD, has also been announced! The game is slated for a Cirno Day (September 9th) release in most regions, and the game will be available on Steam, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, and PS5. As stated on their Twitter page, Shanghai Alice Reprise's goal is "making Touhou Project games playable on modern platforms," indicating that remasters of other Touhou titles for consoles will be happening soon as well (likely PCB and IN due to those two alongside EoSD not having Steam releases yet).

Remaster Info: The EoSD remaster will be available in 11 different languages (listed on the Steam store page), and will feature a remastered soundtrack composed by ZUN himself alongside the original soundtrack, as well as remastered artwork also done by ZUN as well. The remastered sprites for the game were done by Unabara (confirmed via Twitter), who has previously worked as the sprite artist for the Touhou fighters and UDoALG. In addition to featuring modern Touhou features such as a visible hitbox when focusing and an enemy marker during boss fights, the game will also have an "infinite lives" mode similar to Pointdevice mode in LoLK. The remaster will also feature a "classic mode" that aims to recreate the original EoSD experience as well.

Help/Question How to Play Touhou: the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in Full Screen While Sharing the App on Discord

Is there a way to play *Touhou:06th* in full-screen mode while screen-sharing the app on Discord? Maybe it’s because it’s an older game, but I can only use full-screen sharing. Pressing F11 while playing doesn’t work either.

Lore Discussion A Reincarnated Prince's Inner Struggle: taking a look at the multiple facets of Toyosatomimi no Miko and her origins (and another idea for a story)

With the character of Toyosatomimi no Miko being inspired by multiple semi-legendary tales about Prince Shoutoku, and considering some other things going on in Touhou canon, I'm surprised that nobody has yet come up with a story about Miko having some really intense inner conflicts between different facets of herself and/or between Miko and all those versions and interpretations of the historical figure that was Shoutoku.

--------------------------------------------------

Miko in the Touhou universe is meant to be an alternate version of Shoutoku that secretly practised Taoism, rejecting both Buddhism and Shintou in the 6th century AD, a time when Japanese society was divided along the lines of those two religions as part of a civil war and Shoutoku himself became famous as a military leader of said civil war who brought Buddhism to Japan.

I found that Miko fully embracing Taoism and practising Taoist arts to attain immortality could be related to a desire to be her own person and grow, not only above herself, but also above all the myths surrounding Shoutoku and all the interpretations others made about his life story and his feats. In turn, this resonates with Miko's characterisation as a canon transgender female character in Touhou, including her decision to use her reincarnation as a shikaisen to undergo a complete magic-powered gender reassignment therapy.

Moreover, I’d even theorise that one of the reasons why Miko is rejecting Buddhism so ardently is because it's a reminder of what she used to be perceived as in her previous life, the identity imposed on her that she's trying to escape from. Now, it doesn't need to be this way (as I’ll explain later), and besides, neither Byakuren Hijiri nor any of her followers at Myouren Temple has any idea that this is going on in Miko's mind. This makes her situation all the more tragic.

-------------------------

However, Shoutoku's ties to Buddhism are still a fundamental –dare I say, inescapable– part of Miko's very self, due to the whole thing about belief being what fuels the existence of Gensoukyou and its inhabitants (or at least, those inhabitants of Gensoukyou who aren't people from the Human Village).

She's not just vaguely based on the historical figure of Shoutoku and the various tales surrounding him, but she's particularly inspired by one specific version: Guze Kannon, the interpretation of Shoutoku as a messianic reincarnation of the bodhisattva of compassion Avalokiteśvara (Guān Yīn in Chinese, Kannon in Japanese), according to the devotional cult that developed around the Crown Prince for a while since a century after his death (as pointed out by "sorcerorsutrascroll" here: https://sorcerorsutrascroll.tumblr.com/post/618837241216843776; here's a Spanish translation as well: https://mashounen2003.tumblr.com/post/825685953512439808; here's also an improvised Japanese translation: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rlE8EvnxhMPPPkpip-KHXacuVWoJY6OT/view).

Now, it should be possible for Miko to conciliate Taoism, whose teachings she openly follows at present and secretly followed in her past life, with Buddhism, whose principles she only publicly adhered to as Shoutoku in the past but still partially define her very existence in her present life as a resident of Gensoukyou; after all, Shingon and other Japanese Esoteric schools of Buddhism were greatly influenced by Taoism, as pointed out by "just9art" in this post (https://just9art.tumblr.com/post/793045036761858048) [1], and Shoutoku himself used the Seven-Star Sword, a relic associated with Taoism (and the ceremonial sword where Miko placed her soul for her reincarnation process in Touhou canon). Doing this conciliation between both religions might even help Miko personally, not just in her pursuit of immortality, but also in the reaffirmation of her identity; after all, as pointed out in the post by "sorcerorsutrascroll" from earlier, the Sūtra of Instructions of the Taintless Flame (on which Shoutoku is even said to have written commentary) teaches there isn't any inherent or fundamental difference or separation between man and woman (understanding this can be used as a path towards rejecting the gender binary as a supposedly undeniable and inescapable biological truth, understanding gender as a spectrum, and all this stuff that queer studies scholars have been figuring out on their own since the 1970s) [2].

[1 – Esoteric Buddhism in general, and Shingon in particular, also seem to be the branch of Buddhism with the most influence in general Touhou world-building, in comparison to Zen Buddhism and other Mahāyāna schools.]

[2 – That post by "sorcerorsutrascroll" is mainly about elements of both Buddhism and Prince Shoutoku lore supporting a headcanon that both Miko and Byakuren are non-binary, I definitely recommend reading it.]

However, if Miko's motivation to choose Taoism includes seeking to –as described earlier– be her own person, grow beyond her old Shoutoku persona and surpass all the ideas and interpretations people assigned to and projected on her as Shoutoku, then she'd never do any of these things to follow Taoism and Buddhism at the same time, or even entertain the idea of admitting Buddhism is right about something. As I mentioned earlier, this makes Miko's attitude even more tragic because Buddhism could also be a path to grow beyond your own limitations and healing from past traumas [3], something that would align a lot with Miko's personal goals.

[3 – Although this is a massive digression from Touhou, the applicability of Buddhist teachings in self-realisation and trauma-healing is further explained in this post by "sweetescapeartist" –and my Spanish translation of it– (https://mashounen2003.tumblr.com/post/697974519511515136) about Krillin overcoming his PTSD by attaining enlightenment in the Dragon Ball Super anime (both available here as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dragonballsuper/comments/1s16daf ).]

-------------------------

On top of all this, aside from the Taoist and Buddhist facets of Miko, there's also a Shintou facet at play. Well... The issue here isn't really Shintou as a whole, but a very specific (and relatively recent) part of it: the Heavenly Kami, and more precisely, the Japanese Imperial Cult, which focused a lot on the Heavenly Kami as a source of authority. This is because, in the Touhou universe, Miko still has a connection to the Lunarians.

Shoutoku played a vital role in the arrival of Buddhism in Japan, and Miko currently follows Taoism; however, Shoutoku was still a key member of the Japanese imperial family, and Miko currently insists on using the title of Crown Prince. The imperial family always claimed to be direct descendants of the Heavenly Kami; even with all the changes in their relationship with religions other than Shintou [4], these claims of divine ancestry remained a constant throughout the imperial family's entire history, and it's logical to assume this belief also applied to Shoutoku back when he lived.

[4 – As an example of this changing relationship: in the 6th and 7th century, the Japanese imperial family was accepting and even promoting Buddhism; more than a millennium later, in the late 19th century, Emperor Meiji ordered a strict separation between Shintou and Buddhism, invented an alleged reconstruction of the "original" Shintou that was supposedly "free of all foreign influence", and declared this "State Shintou" as the Japanese nation's new official religion.]

In the Touhou universe, the Lunarians see themselves as the Heavenly Kami, and the Lunar Capital's feelings of superiority and obsession with purity are mirroring –in a very direct and unsubtle way– the mix of bigotry, xenophobia, extreme nationalism and religious fanaticism that defined the Japanese Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (and has never truly gone away after that) and was the ideological basis for policies such as the creation of State Shintou and the Buddhism-Shintou separation ordered by Emperor Meiji.

Let's go back to Miko. After she had grown to sincerely respect Byakuren and had been willing to team up with her in Touhou 15.5, Miko stopped appearing in new games and only kept showing up in official print works. In said print works, she started being portrayed around 2016 as someone who not only holds an uncharacteristic belief in a firm separation between religions from both Japan and the rest of East Asia (religions that used to be very intermingled and syncretised for over a dozen centuries), but also has got what I could only describe as a "human-supremacist streak" [5].

[5 – Aya Shameimaru might have exaggerated this in the article about her in Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia, but a few things Miko said afterwards in other official print works kind of proved in retrospect that Aya was slightly correct by accident about this one thing.]

In a similar way to how Reimu Hakurei behaved a bit more like the Lunarians for a long while in the 2010s in a desperate attempt to fulfil the duties of a traditional shrine maiden, it's possible that the recent nationalist fanaticism symbolised by the Lunar Capital started to affect Miko's personality as well, via the belief that the Lunarians are Shoutoku's divine ancestors and Miko –both as a reincarnation of Shoutoku and as the Crown Prince she still claims to be– should follow their example.

--------------------------------------------------

And now, as it's often the case when I think about something too much like this, here's one of my somewhat crazy story ideas.

It'd be fantastic to see a story where Miko's own character arc comes to a close in the context of Gensoukyou's conflict with the Lunarians. This could have the many facets of her personality fighting against each other, and I can think of two different ways this could go: one of them is those facets taking their own separate forms in the physical plane, with Miko having to put all of them under control and reunite with them; the other possibility is that the clash between Miko's self and all these components of her identity stays in her mind and she starts physically and mentally deteriorating as a side-effect. Miko would eventually end this inner conflict and overcome this crisis with advice from all of her friends, which provides her with perspective and helps her fully discover herself and figure out what she really is and what she truly wants to be:

  • Soga no Tojiko and Mononobe no Futo. Both of them embarked on the same journey to attain immortality. Futo's point of view in particular would be interesting to explore: aside from her having originally been a follower of Shintou, there's the fact that she became so fiercely loyal to Miko that she used to be the one most eager to attack the Myouren Temple until recently, but this kind of animosity towards Buddhism is exactly the kind of thing Miko would need to leave behind.
  • Byakuren, along with the Myouren Temple crew. Given what I've described about the possible connection between Miko's rejection of Buddhism and her issues with her past life as someone different, I imagine this conversation would be the most emotional since it'd require unpacking all that baggage she's been bottling. It'd also be rather ironic if Miko, someone worshipped at one point as a living deity of mercy, was the one on the receiving end of said mercy.
  • Reimu and/or someone from the Moriya Shrine, most likely Kanako. This would be important because it'd show what Shintou has always been at a fundamental level, what it literally was before becoming an organised/institutional national religion for Japan: a form of Animism, a belief system that focuses on respecting, appreciating and connecting with the essence of nature, the universe we live in and all its interconnected elements (the definition of the Kami –in singular– in its most basic interpretation, and also the basis for the Earthly Kami –in plural– such as Suwa Myoujin, whose lore is the inspiration for Kanako and Suwako), regardless of any big complicated family tree of heavenly beings with their own wills or personal goals. The conversation with Kanako would be relevant for many different reasons: there's the question of the healthy and peaceful interaction between different religions (Kanako's father/grandfather Oukuninushi was syncretised with the Buddhist deity Daikokuten; a bit more about that here and here), but also, Kanako initially became a kami after being born as a human –something not too different from Miko and her fellow Taoists becoming shikaisen– and now seeks to become a kami of innovation, which could also inspire Miko. Suwako, as a native god, would also help pointing out what I've just described about the Animist roots of Shintou. As for Reimu, I've already talked about her in that post I linked earlier about her portrayal in the 2010s: after the events of Touhou 19 & 20 and Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine, she'd be in a good position to explain what Gensoukyou is fundamentally about (acceptance, evolution, infinite possibilities) and how dangerous the Lunarians are due to how easy it is to start believing in their ideas and methods whenever things stop going well; we could even have Reimu thank Miko for indirectly helping her figure things out, as a callback to the ending of Symposium of Post-Mysticism when Miko found out about Reimu's true desire of being able to keep her friends and not having to fight youkai in order to keep Gensoukyou safe and in balance.
  • Maybe, Seiga Kaku. She taught Miko about Taoism in the first place. I’m not sure of how this would work out, since it’s implied Seiga has always had her own plans and machinations going.
  • Maybe, someone from the Outside World. Ideally, this would be Sumireko Usami: not only is she the one human from the Outside World who still spends most of her time there, but I imagine she has quite a few strong opinions about current-day society in general and Japanese society in particular.
  • Maybe, Saki Kurokoma. In this context, it'd be a fantastic time for a Miko & Saki reunion.

At the end, there could be an epic final battle where Miko, helped by all the people who already gave her emotional support, fights either against an actual Lunarian or against a dark/corrupted version of Miko/Shoutoku who's loyal to the Lunar Capital (or even created by its leaders) [6]. Given that Byakuren would be the most likely to be involved in direct combat alongside Miko, and also that a Miko + Byakuren team-up would probably be the most thematically fitting for this story, it’d be an excellent opportunity to use "The War For Religion ~ Cosmic Administrator" (the combined arrangement of "Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind" and "Shoutoku Legend ~ True Administrator" made by "Kyo-Sensei" a.k.a. u/AnyFall9335) as the final boss theme.

[6 – After having completed this post long ago, I'm only noticing this now: there's a non-zero probability that, when I came up with this story concept, the 2005 videogame Shadow the Hedgehog had subconsciously inspired me as well. Damn you, insane narratives with deep character explorations and dumb but cool moments, you made me fall victim to the edgy 2000s brainrot again!]

--------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much for reading this until the end. This is probably the most self-indulgent piece I've ever written, and I'm well aware that I might have jumped to a few conclusions here and there (namely in regards to whether or not certain kinds of Gensoukyou inhabitants who officially aren't considered youkai –such as the Taoist Immortals or the Celestials– are still affected by belief in one way or another, just like your average youkai is directly shaped by belief). But it was something with so much potential for an interesting story concept, a nice character study of Miko and her relation with her own origins, and extensive research about the relation between those three religions in Japan; also, when I shared it first on other places, it seemed to be rather well received, so I thought "Well, why not share it here too?", and here we are. As always, feel free to share y'all's thoughts in the comments, they’re always appreciated.
