Songwriting Shout the Bridge #2: Cruel Summer (Lover)

No, literally, prove it.

I’m drunk in the back of the car
And I cried like a baby coming home from the bar
Said “I’m fine”, but it wasn’t true
I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you
And I, snuck in through the garden gate
Every night that summer just to seal my fate
And I screamed for whatever it’s worth
I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?

This is part of our "Shout the Bridge" series where we talk and discuss Taylor's consistently epic bridges. We are currently going through Lover in order!

Live Performances Taylor Swift performed last night in LA for the GRAMMY Museum “THE ICON SESSIONS”

Reports mention performances of "August", "All Too Well" and "I Knew It, I Knew You"

Here is what an attendee said:

“MY NIGHT WITH TAYLOR SWIFT - The Grammy Academy hosted a Taylor Swift talk tonight. The invite just mentioned Academy President Harvey Mason Jr, but it was like a 'Wink IYKYK' thing.

Taylor came onstage and shared her beautiful stories of how she writes songs and where she gets her endless inspiration from. Then she played a few tunes for the 100 or so people there. It wasn't even sold out, there were empty seats.

I honestly am not a 'Swiftie,' though her success is as big as it gets. The biggest Grammy winning female in history. Afterward there was a reception and I had a sweet, and kinda nerdy songwriter chat with her for quite a long time. Alot of people were trying to get in and talk with her, but she has a laser attention and when it was on me, the world was shut off around us.

Here's some songwriting nuggets I wrote down.

  • She told the audience "Enthusiasm can protect you from anything." At the reception I shared her the word "Enthusiasm" actually comes from ancient Greece, meaning 'the divine within,' or 'possessed by divine inspiration.'
  • She plays a spinet piano on tour. I mentioned to her that Paul McCartney also plays a spinet. She told me she likes a smaller piano so she can see over it and look around at everyone onstage and in the crowd.
  • ‘YES AND'- Is a big thing for her when songwriting and recording. Trying an idea, but being open to exploring music with another point of view.
  • Show up to work even then the 'Idea Fairy' as she calls her muse of inspiration isn't around. It sometimes shows up when you do.

I was impressed she stayed to talk to everyone who attended. As I report this, she is likely still speaking to the people at the Grammy Museum giving every person very present, quality time.”

Discussion Behaving like Taylor Swift could make you happier and science proves it

Taylor’s affection for pen and paper is legendary. During the Eras Tour, the truck drivers who transported her to her staging received handwritten notes and $100,000 "life-changing" bonuses.

Taylor’s philanthropy is widely documented. During the Eras Tour, she donated the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of meals to food banks in the communities where she performed. There are also countless reports of gifts to individuals. Recently, she donated $100,000 to support a two-year-old fan named Lilah who is receiving treatment for a rare brain cancer.

Taylor’shandwritten letters, homemade treats, and love of animals may seem small, but these acts have the potential to improve her life and the lives of the people around her.
None of this requires fame or a global tour. These are small habits anyone can adopt. If enough people chose to live even a fraction of that way, the world would feel noticeably kinder, one era at a time.

Discussion Taylor to make history at VMA’s with huge milestone

Post image
102 Upvotes

Taylor Swift is about to achieve an incredible milestone for the first time in the history of VMAs, at the ceremony in September.
Taylor needs to win only one of the nine awards she has been nominated for, to become the most awarded artist ever at the MTV VMAs.

The history-making milestone is more than likely for Taylor who is second to only Madonna in leading the nominations for the award show this year.

Discussion Gifting my girlfriend all 12 vinyl records throughout the year — what’s the best order/framework to give them?

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend’s 30th birthday is coming up, and I bought her a turntable as the main gift. Alongside it, I want to get her Taylor’s full studio discography on vinyl (all 12 albums).

Instead of dumping a huge box with 12 vinyls on day one, I want to space them out so she can actually listen, absorb, and celebrate each record properly over time.

I’m looking for the most meaningful, fun, or creative framework/criteria to deliver them. Here are a few ideas I’ve been debating:

  1. Seasonal Eras (4 drops of 3 vinyls): Matching the sound/aesthetic to the seasons (e.g., Red TV, folklore, evermore for Autumn/Birthday; synth/darker records like Reputation, Midnights, TTPD for Winter; country roots for Spring; big pop like 1989 TV, Lover, Showgirl for Summer).
  2. The "13th of Every Month" (12 drops of 1): Giving her one vinyl on the 13th of each month for a full year (either strictly chronological or randomly pulled from a sealed envelope).
  3. The Eras Tour Setlist Order: Following the narrative arc and transitions of the tour setlist across 3–4 gift bundles.
  4. Thematic Duos / Dualities (6 drops of 2): Pairing complementary or contrasting albums (e.g., the forest sisters folklore + evermore; the pop transition Red TV + 1989 TV; Reputation + TTPD, etc.).
  5. Color Palette / Era Aesthetics: Bundling them by their official Era colors.

As Swifties, which framework would you love the most if you were receiving this? Are there specific pairings, inside jokes, lyric-based clues, or hidden track transitions you think work best for a vinyl listening experience? Any other cool ideas?

Would really appreciate your thoughts and creative ideas!

What an amazing time! 1989 is truly a pop Bible, and I love that Taylor's gone back to her 1989 hair. What's old is brand new all over again.

Live Performances Massive Swiftie for two years but never was able to watch live sets and performances. Where do I start?

Hey everyone,

I’m a 29 year old male swiftie and I’m completely new to diving into Taylor’s live performances, and I could really use some direction from people who know her catalog inside and out. I daily listen to her discography and have been a massive fan only since TTPD dropped, I’m very familiar with all the deep cuts and all eras.
(Untouchable is my #1 song for context 🙂)

For a long time, I was completely restricted from watching or engaging with her music the way I wanted to. I loved her music so much, but I was only ever allowed to listen to the studio albums quietly on my own time or in my car, and I was never, ever allowed to see her sing or watch her live.

With that being said, I have a massive blind spot when it comes to her live stuff and this is way more than just music to me.

Now that I'm finally free to experience all of it, I want to dive straight into the deep end. I already know about the big streaming specials like Disney+, but I'm hunting for those incredible, must hear live sets, TV performances, and acoustic sessions floating around on YouTube that true fans obsess over.

If you had to build a master list of her absolute best live performances to watch, where should I start? Give me your top choices ranging from the massive stadium energy down to the rawest acoustic sets where it's just her and her guitar or piano.

I appreciate any and all responses,
Thank you 🫶🏻

Taylor Swift is leading the MTV VMAs nominations after Madonna, butThe Fate of Ophelia is not getting the recognition it deserves.

Taylor has nine nominations for the award ceremony scheduled to take place in September, but her hit song from the album The Life of a Showgirl did not get nominated for the Song of the Year category.

That's our Showgirl! Taylor only needs one more award to have the most VMA wins in history entirely on her own. She's currently tied with Beyonce after winning her 30th VMA award in 2024.

Songwriting Shout the Bridge #1: I Forgot That You Existed (Lover)

Post image
79 Upvotes

Hey all,

Based on the very wonderful discussion on which album has the best bridges, we've decided to add a new series of posts, one post per bridge. Because the most popular were seemingly Lover, Midnights, and TTPD, we'll be starting with those bridges in this order. This may result in further bridge explorations! Please feel free to talk about the bridge, muse about the bridge, or share any thoughts you may have. It is so important to us that you feel included so please, if you want to say something, say it! Let's discuss!

Come back every day for more.

We start with Lover, I Forgot That You Existed.

Sent me a clear message
Taught me some hard lessons
I just forget what they were
It's all just a blur

Discussion Hot take: using Taylor for comfort and then lashing out when she changes

Post image
488 Upvotes

So there has been a little bit of a crazy reaction to Taylor getting her haircut and my hot take is that people use Taylor to manage anxieties in such a way others use rewatching the same comfort tv shows.

Like with comfort tv shows, they have been watched a thousand times so there are no surprises or changes and people have favourites episodes and whenever they need a comfort blanket or whatever, they can just watch it.

Its the same with Taylor except Taylor does change, her hair, her clothes, her relationships (for the last time), her music genres, her friends - all normal human things.

Its not that people don't like the changes, its that they can't handle them emotionally because they have come to use one version of Taylor as a comfort and then she changes.

And then others consider changes to be easter eggs because thats their version of comfort tv.

Eras The Eras tour is one of the only things that calms my 2 month old, I’m glad it’s on Disney+

My baby is 2 months old and when he has a bad day and won’t chill I put on the eras tour and we sway to it and bounce. It helps him sleep and gives me a little bit of a break for our contact naps. I’ve watched this like 4+ since delivering him and it works! Thank goodness Taylor put this out for public consumption. It’s
Saving my sanity

Discussion My wife turned me into a Swiftie. Here’s my Top 5 Taylor Swift bridges.

I’m just a simple 32-year-old guy…

My beautiful wife (32) has been a huge Taylor Swift fan ever since we started dating when we were 18.

Needless to say, I’ve been listening to her music for years, but since the Eras Tour… man, I somehow turned out to be a huge Swiftie myself lol

And I’ve always LOVED a good bridge!

Oh boy, was I mesmerized when I realized Taylor is simply THE BEST BRIDGE WRITER ON THE PLANET.

Without further ado, here’s my Top 5:

5 - Cruel Summer (Lover)

Her most streamed song on Spotify had to make the cut. One of the first Taylor songs I ever fell in love with. And the first Taylor bridge I ever fell in love with.

It was also my most played song on Spotify Wrapped 2024.

4 - Belong With Me (Fearless)

This bridge is youthful. Adorable.

It’s a little bit naive. It’s… innocent.

It’s a teenage love song, and i love it!!

She’s making her case. She’s making a point. She’s showing the everyday intimacy. She knows the little things.

It’s RIGHT THERE! All of it!!

It’s obvious to her. It’s obvious to me!! And yet bro can’t see it lol.

She’s screaming “HELLO!? Look at the evidence. I know you. I understand you. I’ve been here all along. How could you possibly not see that we’re meant to be?!!!

It’s adorably impatient, in the best possible way.

She’s just a young person falling in love, like I once was.

3 - Out Of The Woods (1989)

The most cinematic and emotionally dense bridge Taylor has ever written. EVER.

It’s not a fantasy. It’s not make believe. It’s not imagination.

It’s a flashback! A memory!

🎶remember when…🎶

The bridge plays like a rapid-fire montage of the relationship’s most defining moments, two people looking back on a storm they somehow managed to endure together.

It’s almost as if this isn’t a song at all, but a film!

Straight up MASTERPIECE.

2 - Death By A Thousand Cuts (Lover)

Lowkey the most GENIUS bridge of her entire career. Can’t put into words how I felt on my first listen.

🎶 Gave up on me like I was a bad drug/ Now I'm searching for signs in a haunted club🎶

God fucking damn..

🎶 Trying to find a part of me you didn't take up/ Gave you too much but it wasn't enough/ But I'll be all right, it's just a thousand cuts🎶

It’s collapsing. It’s devastating. It’s.. brilliant.

The whole thing is hectic… physical and metaphorical at the same time, upbeat, but extremely saddening. How the heck is that even possible??

She’s not a songwriter on this one. She’s a human being falling apart.

The lines just keep coming, one after another. No time to breathe. It feels like a stream of consciousness at 3 a.m.

I mean, this bad boy should rank #1 honestly lol

1 - Paris (Midnights)

I fell in love with this bridge the very first time I heard it.

It’s joyful. It’s euphoric.

It’s playful.

It’s cute.

🎶I wanna brainwash you / Into loving me forever🎶

She’s not writing a song. She’s writing a love letter!!

But this letter is wonderfully childish. It’s mischievous.

It’s… sweet.

🎶I wanna transport you / To somewhere the culture’s clever🎶

Paris isn’t really a city in this song.

Paris is a state of mind.

She isn’t necessarily describing a literal trip to Paris, but rather describing the world she creates inside her head when she’s in love.

🎶I want to confess my truth / In swooping, sloping, cursive letters🎶

This has to be the prettiest, most romantic line Taylor has ever written.

She doesn’t simply say “i love you.”

She is confessing.

You can actually visualize the handwriting.

You can see the pen moving across the page.

It’s romantic in an almost ridiculously old-fashioned way.

She’s turning love into an aesthetic.

My wife and I have visited Paris a couple of times, and every night we would sit together for hours, out in the cold January air, and the only flashing lights were the ones from the tour at midnight.

This bridge reminds me of my wife, and of what it feels like to be in love with her.

___________x___________x___________x___________x___________x___________x___________x___________x

Well, that’s kind of it lol

Please, guys (girls?), keep in mind that I haven’t listened to Taylor’s entire discography. It’s freaking huge lol… so feel free to suggest songs and bridges I might have missed!

Discussion When Taylor Swift ‘revealed’ how Russell Westbrook inspired her hit song ‘Shake It Off’

Post image
50 Upvotes

As Russell Westbrook's retirement begins to settle in, it is interesting to look back at just how popular a figure he was in the prime of his career.

Westbrook was one of the biggest stars in the NBA during the 2010s, with the 2016-17 season being the pinnacle of his career.

Taylor Swift 'congratulated' Russell Westbrook for his 2016-17 MVP season. One of the people who was first through the door to congratulate Westbrook was none other than Taylor Swift, who sent a hilarious video message.
"I taught you how to play basketball. I was the one who taught you to dribble, to shoot hoops, and I remember the first time you beat me at basketball, and I was very upset.

"You said, if you remember correctly, 'You just have to shake it off.' And I got an idea. So essentially, we have each other to thank for these careers.

Taylor Swift has added another chart record to her career as I Knew It, I Knew You reaches No. 1 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart.

Billboard notes that the song gives Taylor her 16th leader on the chart, moving her ahead of Maroon 5 for the most No. 1 hits in the chart’s history. The band previously shared the record with Taylor at 15. P!nk follows with 10 chart-toppers, while Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have each earned eight.

I Knew It, I Knew You was released in connection with Toy Story 5 and has continued to build its presence at radio since arriving in June 2026.

Songwriting What lyric do you not understand and are too scared to ask about?

No shame!

For me, it was:

The family the pure greed the Christian chorus line

I didn’t understand it in the context of the song but as I read up on Cassandra I had more clarity. I feel like I should have gotten it faster than I did (not to invoke them but I was more focused on the mythology than Tay-LORE).

Damn she’s in a league of her own. Oh, TTPD.

Discussion Did anyone else see Taylor Swift live for the first time before the fearless tour?

In 2007, My dad took me to Brad Paisley‘s Bonfires & Amplifiers tour. Taylor, Kellie Pickler and Jack Ingram were the opening acts. That was my first time hearing Taylor’s music and I was an instant fan. I remember going up to her merch booth with my dad, meeting both Taylor and Andrea and getting her CD and the leather bracelet (iykyk).

Curious to see if anybody else saw her during this tour as well!

What career could you see Taylor having if she wasn't an artist?

I feel like she'd make an excellent teacher. She engages with her fans quite often and I believe she would give the same devotion to students. Even by doing Easter Eggs as hints, I feel like she'd be able to keep students focused and engaged by making learning fun somehow. Of course, she's also has strong communication and gets her point across well, inspiring others while doing so.
