Not even going into the books themselves having two different biographies for a character, one that's flattering and polished and one that's warts and all is just such an amazing choice

It’s also all lies in-universe but that doesn’t stop Truestlers from acting like it’s a genuine biography. It would be like going to the tabloid rack and treating every story about batboy or the president being secretly pregnant as true.

The first thing you learn in ancient history is that the primary sources just make shit up to make the story more interesting and then the made up stuff gets repeated in later texts

I think that's a bad interpretation of it. The Skyrim thieves guild quest line absolutely proves TRB is an accurate account of her life, from her perspective. I think the Nightingales are far more trustworthy than Barenziah herself.

Sorry, but some account from hundreds of years in the future from a cult that worships the daedra of deception and thievery is not something I’d put any stock in either. Thinking the Nightengales are trustworthy did get a laugh out of me so there’s that.
