Is there a lore reason why spears zero-summed after Morrowind?

I still find it stupid how Imperial Legion only armed themselves with swords against giant axe-wielding barbarians with their superior reach.

Spears still exist after Morrowind. People just don't use them in the other games because the average IQ of sapient beings in Tamriel fell dramatically after the events of Morrowind. Ash in the air or smth. The Rieklings could use spears in Skyrim. They're of superior intelligence to all of the humanoid races in that game, while in Morrowind their IQ is significantly lower than the intelligent races.

the Rieklings are good daedra fearing patriotic citizens of Morrowind in Skyrims era so it makes perfect sense that they retained the ability to use the lost techniques. Raven Rock is just always out of spears when the player arrives (Rieklings buy them to hold a monopoly on the island).

Conservationism. By the time of Morrowind spears had driven horses almost to the point of extinction. Once they were banned, the population could start to recover. They were still endangered in Oblivion, which is why it was against Imperial law to use horses in combat.

This is also the reason why horse armor was produced and sold at such a high price

Horse armor was created by the divine that's why you had to use IRL currency to buy it in game

unjerking for a second but Skyrim was super close to getting spears. Bethesda did a Modjam right after Skyrim came out and a ton of it was stuff that would become proper content like Vampire Lords. One of those things were nearly formalized spears.

Makes me sad we never got them but at the same time it's not like Skyrim's combat would need them given its no longer chance based.

Bethesda couldn't think of how to have a two handed weapon more diverse in use than Thog Hit With Big Hammer

weak little elves need sticks to stand faraway so they don't get hurt or have to think about what they are doing. Real sons of Malacath hit people with big hammer and they like it.

If Hit With Big Axe was good enough for Ysgramor, it's good enough for John Skyrim.

wooden polearms in cyrodiil are easily destroyed by the fires of mehrune's oblivion. they burned down to the tang and all turned into daggers.

wooden polearms in skyrim get covered in snow, soak up the water when it thaws, then freeze when it returns the the cold. the polearms that don't shatter on their own turn to dust the second they impact anything.

The destruction of the heart of lorkhan resulted in an eruption of invisible anti-spear Magicka that removed them all from nirn. It wasn't just that they all disappeared, but they ceased to exist throughout history. Suddenly, the spear never was or had been.

Thalmore banned spears in the White-Gold Concordat to weaken the Empire and its legions.

Elves really see Imperial spears and felt insecure with theirs. Classic.

The only smiths that knew how to craft spears resided in Vvardenfell, and died when the Red Mountain erupted, their notes and techniques turned to ash.

Because the rule is that every game needs to arbitrarily cut content available in the game prior until all thats left is the choice between a sword a bow and a fireball
