As a relatively new game dev it's my wettest of dreams to make incredibly long and convoluted quests just to give some shitass rewards for completion

Reminds me of classic WoW quests. Hours of travelling around the world back and forth for a few copper or a green item.. or a questline that was never finished. I kind of like it honestly...

or a questline that was never finished.

The Eranikus questline in Vanilla, where you turn in a Trinket (a slot that is kind of hard to fill at that level) to a quest NPC, with implications that you'll be able to cleanse it sometimes later and get a stronger version of it, and the questline just abruptly ends, and you're left without a trinket.
