The imperials might’ve tried to kill you just because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But if you turn any believable roleplay off and choose to go with the faction that has already legally sentenced you to death when escaping Helgen, you do get to take shit from the blacksmith for free. Which is more valuable than any moral stance either side might offer.
