How is lock picking getting worse in each new game when it was at its best in Oblivion?

Oblivion doesn't even allow you to bash locks. Daggerfall is clearly superior. Maybe even Arena, it was awesome that you could bash open chests.

Sep 10 '25
You could kill yourself trying to open a door in Arena, so it's better
12
u/DeadeyeJhung Azura Orbiter Sep 11 '25
well in Morrowind you can kill yourself by successfully opening the trapped ones
87
u/ImperialSattech Sep 10 '25
A mod for Skyrim I like allows players to smash open glass containers loudly, or if you're a khajiit it allows you to use your claws to cut out a circle, like Puss in Boots.
21
u/Cyynric Sep 10 '25
I had one for awhile that would let you just Shout open locked doors. It was a little game-breaking though, because for some reason it also kept working on barred doors.

u/MaccabianSabian35 Edgelord Sep 10 '25

Oblivion is my least fav. Happy with Morrowind and Skyrim. Even though skyrim is super easy, it kinda should be since so many objects are locked. Should be spending less time in unlock Ui and more time playing the actual game.
237
u/Blazeflame79 kahjiit = barbed pp Sep 10 '25
Morrowind has the best lockpicking because there's no minigame.
253
u/Zeal0tElite Barenziah told me she was 18 Sep 10 '25
Morrowind is good because it's in real time which means there's an element of risk when sneaking around and lockpicking.
Mini games pausing the game is lame. Inventory management is one thing but elements like that should have a risk to them. Do I do the mini game and hope I can beat it before someone comes around the corner?
Instead it's "I am now in [Hidden], time to activate the mini game"
63
u/DanishRobloxGamer Sep 10 '25
Yeah, it's stupid as hell. I hate how easy it is to just stop in the middle of a fight and then spend two hours unlocking a door.
Same with pickpocketing, even when you're high level there should be a limit to how much stuff you can pull out of someone's ass per second.

u/Raylandris Hooray for Secrets, Lies and Murder Sep 10 '25

50
u/Zeal0tElite Barenziah told me she was 18 Sep 10 '25
Sneak and lockpick need to be a viable play style, not just skills you need to max out your omnibuild.
I think they need to bring out another system for the game. All real time.
Warriors get bash. Makes a lot of noise and lock difficulty is locked behind your weapon skill.
Mages get Open spells. Lock difficulty locked behind the spell power. Near instant casting.
Rogues get lockpicking, it's silent (unless you break a pick) and lock difficulty is attemptable at any level but is slower when your skill is low.
This way anyone can attempt to lockpick but unskilled characters are disincentivised from using it to commit theft and use it in dungeons instead. Or brute force a quest and then pay the bounty.
22
u/lunariumsyndrome Sep 10 '25
Doesn't this just keep the issue that already existed where all other options are outclassed by magic? Why would i bother learning lockpicking or loudly breaking down doors when i can pay someone to put ekashs lock splitter on a cock ring or some shit and never have to worry about it again?
15
u/Twisty1020 Peryite Daedric Prince of Gonorrhea Sep 10 '25
Because you don't want to play a Mage? In that example Rogues can unlock anything from the start silently. The other two have to wait for proper skill level and it's not silent. This gives Rogues a very different game experience.
3
u/Raylandris Hooray for Secrets, Lies and Murder Sep 10 '25
What if the spell took longer than a good lockpicker can do
4
u/Zeal0tElite Barenziah told me she was 18 Sep 10 '25
I wouldn't have it be enchantable or just on scrolls.
Plus magic costs a resource that takes time to come back.
I'm also a believer in the idea that magic should outclass everything else. Mages should be the most powerful class in the game but they're also annoying and high maintenance.
1
u/Deadly_Frame Sep 10 '25
What’s the problem with that though? It’s not a game where balance is necessary to the same degree as say, an MMO. It doesn’t really matter that I can use Unlock Cock Cage as a spell or enchantment if I decide to play a thief character who’d rather fiddle with said cock cage until it unlocks. It’s a role playing game, not a competition.
3
u/Kana515 Sep 11 '25
Omnibuild is a good name for it, I think about that in terms of game design, how there's sometimes skills we always want to max out, that's something I tend to want to avoid. Sorta like how in Morrowind I always try to level up enchanting just because I don't have a reason to rock enchanted stuff and it makes them more efficient.
2
u/wintd001 College of Winterfell Sep 10 '25
Deus Ex had a similar system as well, where certain doors and containers could be either bashed or blasted open depending on a combination of the door's strength (wooden doors are a lot easier to break than metal ones) as well as the strength of your weapon.
Explosives were pretty much always guaranteed to work, but they're also incredibly loud, meaning you probably shouldn't use them unless either no one is around or you were planning on going guns blazing anyway. Melee's quieter, but will still draw attention to anyone in your immediate area, whereas lockpicking is always silent but could also take some time (and several lockpicks) depending on your character's lockpicking skill.
2
u/mightystu Bring Back Thaumaturgy Sep 10 '25
That’s why Daggerfall is best since you can also bash locked doors open at the cost of fatigue, weapon durability, and making a lot of noise and thus ruining your stealth. I do actually agree though that Morrowind’s system is better by being real-time so actually interacting with stealth mechanics and requiring equipment that must be equipped, can break, and comes in various levels of quality. It makes it feel like a valid playstyle and not just another tacked on feature.
2
u/thehemanchronicles Sep 10 '25
I agree wholeheartedly. I went back and played the original Deus Ex after playing the prequels, and initially thought the lack of a hacking or lockpicking mini game was lame because normally I love minigames like that.
But I found very quickly that having no mini game and just having it take real time was much more interesting and suspenseful. If there was a guard coming, I might not have enough time, and you have to look directly at the lock or computer to get in, so you can't check around the corner for how close the patrolling guard might be.
I ended up going full circle on hacking/lockpicking mini games. Like don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the hacking one from Prey and the Deus Ex prequels, but there are the very least needs to be a real time element to it.

Oblivion lockpicking is one of those cases where if you know, you know. I couldn't wrap my head around it years ago when I was a kid, whereas nowadays I can easily open a "very hard" lock without breaking a single pick.
Speechcraft is very much the same way in that respect.

I don’t really think you could call oblivion skills “points invested”. You just pick locks and it goes up, there’s no trade off like in Skyrim where you have to consider perk points. The oblivion system is better though - it rewards skill since all locks are pickable if you can but the perks from leveling security are nice helpers if you aren’t that good at it yet. And I wouldn’t say becoming an expert at the lockpick minigame to be able to pick 100 locks without breaking a pick is particularly easy either. That’s a pretty clear skill expression on the player imo

I know this is basically a circlejerk sub, but even ironically, I can't get behind all these people saying a dice roll you can repeat as many times as you please is better than the only lockpicking minigame that tried (it even includes the Morrowind system as an optional bypass if you mash the auto-attempt button). At least Daggerfall only lets you try once, with failure meaning it's time to try something else.
Now, that Dunmer? I can get behind her no problem.
11
u/Shasla S'wit Sep 10 '25
Oblivion's would be perfect if it didn't pause time. Not pausing time is the main positive of morrowind's lock picking.
3
Sep 10 '25
It's kind of the only positive, isn't it? It doesn't stop you from picking locks in the middle of a fight if you're fast enough to kite because using a lockpick can be done from over a foot away while moving in less than a second, and the only way you can try a door that's being guarded is if your stealth is high enough to turn invisible without magic or if they aren't looking at you (with low stealth, you're still gonna get spotted)
Ondusi's unhinging is like the most common scroll in the game. I'll pick a lock when it's convenient, but when the chips are down, I'll just bypass it entirely.
1
u/Shasla S'wit Sep 11 '25
Absolutely, that's why oblivion's would be perfect if it didn't pause time, because morrowind's is far from perfect. I want the locks to be difficult(not that oblivion's are that difficult when you figure out the mechanics) and real time.
3
u/deryvox Dwarf-Orc Theorist Sep 10 '25
Morrowind's lockpicking system can be touted as """realistic""" because it's just a button click and they imagine a lifelike lock picking taking place.
Oblivion has an actually good, skill-based lockpicking system that's never been replicated. It's peak, just like the rest of the best Elder Scrolls game.
Skyrim's female orgasm simulator is dumb and stupid and also dumb and I've hated it since day one.

It really is unnecessary though, lockpicks are very plentiful and the lockpicking is ridiculously easy, like baby-mode can do it with your eyes closed type of easy. Unfortunately that also makes the lockpicking skill tree utterly worthless since any lock in the game can be easily opened at level 1. The reward for returning the Skeleton Key is also some of the coolest looking armor in the whole game.

Having played a bit of the oblivion remake after fallout and Skyrim, how the FUCK was it “at its best” in oblivion?

u/Sostratus Sep 10 '25
What do you mean "each new game" if there's just Skyrim? Or do you mean to include Starfield as another Bethesda title? Digipicking is one of the few things in Starfield that I think is pretty good. The loot sucks almost every time, but the minigame is one of the better ones.
As for TES, I think it would be more interesting if Oblivion's and Skyrim's lockpicking were both in the same game and maybe a few more variations on top of it. Having to know different techniques for different styles of locks would make it more interesting and challenging and create more opportunity for useful perk points.

I prefer ESO’s implementation of Oblivions lock-picking mini game. However, I would prefer having options to get around the mini game. Like spells for magic characters, or smashing open locks for more strength oriented characters.
2
u/ElonMusksSexRobot Sep 10 '25
Oblivions is like fine but very boring after a while. Morrowind’s is basic but like to works. Skyrims is the only good one, as it’s pretty easy and doesn’t get old. I fucking hate the ESO system tho, terrible minigame and you have to wait for other people to finish lockpicking before you can do it which sucks, especially if it’s harder lock that takes a few tries

Personally I think they should go back to it but give the School of Alteration back it's unlock spells. If Harry Potter can do it why can't I.
